Meal: Parmigiana with chips and salad. The meals appear to have improved since our secretary started paying their bills.
Bob introduced our President and the gates were open and we were off and running. James will be at the RI Convention in Melbourne next week, dare I say it, taking the moped in traditional club style.
In reports;
· Greg spoke to Brooke Jensen about the Science and Engineering Challenge on Monday the 14th of August. Eight schools will be involved. Volunteers will be needed for this event.
· Greg also spoke to Brook about the upcoming National Youth Science Forum. We are actively looking for candidates for this year’s event.
· Greg is going to speak to Hannah Van Zyl about Warrnambool College’s outdoor education program for indigenous girls. Stay tuned. (Postponed for a week - Ed.)
· Paul advised us that he has paid the club’s bills and is about to head overseas for three months. I didn’t realise we paid the club treasurer that well.
· James informed us that the change-over dinner will be held at the Lady Bay Hotel on July 8th. The cost will be $70 per head.
· Bob has some good guest speakers lined up and has rescheduled the cemetery tour.
· Bob will ask the bowls club if we can pick four meals from the menu and rotate them. Lindsay nominated roast beef, roast lamb, roast chicken and roast pork.
· Bob is proposing a ten-pin bowling night followed by a meal at Bojangles next Thursday night. Details to follow.
· Bruce was able to report that he is on a new American myeloma treatment trial and is doing very well. He also reported that Sandy Roberts has done a wonderful job raising money and awareness for Myeloma Australia.
· Brendan announced unexpectedly that Ron McLeod is now using the StackApp. This is surprising because Ron’s phone is made out of bakelite and has an original, Paul Harris approved, rotary dial.
· Nooka advised that he was leading his own footy tipping contest with 67 winners. T-Bone, Dillo and Rob all place their tips before the games are played and so trail Nooka in second place.
· Gerard reminded members that volunteers are still needed for the Neil Porter Brauer College Automotive Program.
Ann Barker then spoke to us about her involvement in the Community Refugee Integration and Settlement Pilot (CRISP) project. The CRISP project helps people who are refugees and have been accepted for settlement in Australia. Volunteers are matched to new arrivals and the volunteers assist with the transition to a new life in Australia. Ann is assisting a family from Iraq who are coming to settle in Warrnambool. She is trying to raise $12,000 to support them with housing, clothing, and similar needs. Robbo noted that he had his ‘how to learn Fasi’ CD’s in the back of the Volvo, but Ann noted that a course teaching English speakers how to learn Fasi was of little benefit to Arabic speakers hoping to improve their English. Matt observed that Ann’s club, the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybeak, had recently hosted the Longest Lunch and raised $9,000 for Loved and Shared. We commend Ann on her involvement in this wonderful project and wish her every success. Hopefully our club will find some way of supporting her.
Lindsay conducted and excellent fines session based on the accounting implications of the recent State budget. We hit the line running and, by applying Officer’s Law, the meeting was judged a complete success.
