Meeting Report 12 June 2019
Sergeant Brendan opened the meeting with a clever joke about a woman getting off a speeding fine. Funnily enough it's a tactic I had always thought I would like to try myself in the days before radar guns. In those days the police officer would put you over and one of the questions he had to ask was "do you have any reason for speeding?". The officer would then studiously write down any response you gave. I'd always fantasised about announcing slowly and carefully, "No. It's a fair cop Guv’. You've got me cold to rights…”, fighting the case, submitting that no Australian would answer in this way, and that it had to be set up.
President-Elect Tim Goodall took charge of the meeting given Lewis is away this week and next, preparing himself mentally for the forthcoming changeover dinner on Saturday night 29 June. Apparently, he is on a cruise in the Kimberley aiming to avoid re-enacting the "Ginger Meadows" story…. 1984… Google it. Having just been up in crocodile country, I did.
Pip's attendance report was a total of 27 including three guests. The number included to non-eaters, although once Lindsay Monaghan saw the beef stroganoff come out, he changed his mind and ate. At a significant discount! The three guests were our hopefully soon to be outgoing exchange student Jan Fiedler, and his parents Christian and Sljana (sp?). I think he was heading to Ballarat this weekend to be one of 19 prospective outbound is competing for 16 places? We wish him luck. He presented as a fine young man with broad ranging interests and talents, and with a string of awards behind him. He is present career path would be to become a software engineer with the aim of working for companies whose aims are to improve people's lives. In short, an excellent candidate. The only potential problem in this writer’s view is that whilst it's incredible to have a black belt in mixed martial arts at such a young age, he explained “mixed martial arts” included a variety of disciplines, one of which was "knives"! Perhaps don't dwell on that at the interviews, Jan. His counsellor is Greg Alison and we wish them both well.
Robert Coffey reported that the Footy Tipping is very much a game of Snakes and Ladders at the moment. Happily this writer forgot to put his tips in last week, and in a Steven Bradbury-esq display got the home teams, being 4/6, in contrast to the leader who only got one by actually picking the teams. Stiff cheddar!
Finesmaster Hutto stunned the meeting by actually turning up and delivering a very lucrative session, showing Penno’s "nomination system" can work beautifully. Especially when his opening fine was on all those who had not volunteered to take on the role during the last two months where Rowan O'Brien has been absent following his nomination. Everyone!
A most enjoyable meeting concluded four minutes early.
Robbo.
