Meeting at the Central Court this week - you need to r.s.v.p.!

We are back meeting for lunch at the Central Court this week!  12.45 for 1.00.

1. Attendees are required to provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination.   We will have a Covid marshal appointed to facilitate this.  This is required for the venue to achieve the capacity limit we require.

2. The venue limit is 30 people.  We have a large number of members expected to attend and some guests who have also asked to attend.  Priority will be given to club members.  However, to allow as many people as possible to attend, you must r.s.v.p. to Brendan.  Please do not turn up without responding to Brendan first as you may not be able to attend the meeting.

Tony's Tribulations.

Greetings fellow Rotarians.

Last week we met at City Memorial Bowls Club.  It was great to get back together with everyone again.  Thanks again to Bob McM. for organising it.  Past member Rob Harris was there and he is looking to rejoin the club – great news.  Brendan brought along a guest, Amrika, and we home she enjoyed our company.

This week we return the to Central Court for lunch on Wednesday, hopefully for good this time.  Yes, we will be arriving in the promised land after the preverbial fourty years wandering in the desert.  The new owners appear keen to welcome us back and no doubt members will be pleased to be back.

The Central Court must require everyone to be fully vaccinated in order to accommodate our numbers.  We are certainly aware these vaccine requirements do affect some of our members.  We are working on a practical plan to allow those valued members to remain connected to the club.

The Jericho Cup on November 28th continues to look like it will definitely go ahead.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday for lunch at the Central Court!

Kind regards

Tony

Garry gives us a report on the upcoming Wine and Music Festival.

Hayesey give us an excellent report on his many endeavours.  Dillo used the opportunity to check his phone, but luckily nobody noticed.

Brendan proudly displays his medals of Rotary combat service.

Halls Gap.

Brendan writes,

This weekend saw the Rotary members booked into Halls Gap venture north to again roll the dice with the weather gods. Friday was a brilliant day with Saturday putting on the usual Halls Gap rain but the rain held off for those packing up on Sunday.  Tim and Di turned up with an extra but fortunately there were no changes required for the Hotel booking.  We were able to have a meal at the pub fortunately with Covid rules allowing us to enjoy a meal and fellowship.

We had the usual fire pit Friday night with David Jelly contributing a single piece of wood for the fire that he stole from the correspondent a couple of weeks earlier.  Some of us headed to Raccolto for coffee and vanilla slice Saturday morning to plan the days events.

No prize for guessing Tim and Di were heading off in search of trout which on this occasion had the better of Tim and Di despite their best efforts. The Jellies went to the Halls Gap Zoo which is always a good day and the Davies went on several bush walks. The Ludemans, O’Neill’s and Riely’s planned a trip to Lake Belfield for canoeing and a spot of fishing.

Bruce was keen to try out his new fishing kyak which looked more like it could pick up a radio signal from China than a fishing vehicle.

Narelle got out and showed her prowess on the stand-up paddle board and Paul and your correspondent took the canoe for a run.  Bruce decided he needed some more fishing rods but had to be creative to get this past Lorraine. He decided to invert the kayak where the rods then went to the bottom of lake Bellfield. Oh well another trip to BCF for Bruce.  Saturday bought another fire pit in between the rain showers with some meals cooked to perfection on a weber by Mr Jellie!

It was a very enjoyable weekend again despite not seeing Geelong loose to Richmond this year!

Paul was a big hit with the wildlife

All aboard for the Jellie Express

Boré’s View.

Last week we welcomed past member Rob Harris to our meeting.  Many of you will recall Rob was a member of our club and used to manage the Warrnambool Speedway.  Years ago, Rob was the subject of a famous cartoon by Boré depicting Rob ‘on the nest’.  Boré now claims he has no idea what the cartoon is about.  I am also going to claim that I don’t know what the cartoon is about.

We are hopeful that Rob may consider ‘returning to the nest’ and re-joining our club.  Fingers crossed.

We thank Boré again for this fantastic cartoon.

Rotary Horse Racing update.

Whenever Warrnambool Central Rotarians buy a share in a new horse, it is always done with a sense of optimism.  We always hope that one day our horse may be good enough to win a race somewhere like Casterton, Donald or St Arnaud.  In the odd wistful moment, we might even dream of qualifying for a feature race in Warrnambool or some such thing.  However, we are also realistic.  We understand that it is more likely that our horse will be a dismal failure, and will end his racing career being ridden by Nozi Tomizawa the wrong way around a track somewhere in regional Queensland.

In the next week or so, Sirileo Miss is going to run in a group 1 race at Flemington on either Derby Day or Oaks Day.  How did this happen?  What glitch in the matrix, what tear in the space-time continuum  produced this extraordinary outcome?  Nobody knows.  It defies all rational explanation.  Here at the Central Spoke we are not going to try to make sense of it, we are just going to enjoy it while it lasts.

Best of luck to all those involved with the great horse.

Fifty years ago.

Fifty years ago people must have marvelled at the thought of what people would be doing in another fifty years.  Your correspondent cannot remember what an aeroplane looks like, but  Pip Ritchie does, and he sends us this report.

Ten years ago.

Actually twelve years ago.  Nothing interesting happened in the Central Spoke exactly ten years ago.  Twelve years ago we were all talking about swine flu.  Remember that!  Brendan Rea reported that our Charter President had caught a touch of the swine flu.  He called the swine flu hotline, but all he got was crackling.

Remember the good old days, when a global pandemic of new virus was funny.
