What a week to miss! The Vocation Visit, the DG visit, the Greening Warrnambool and Bowls night... All sounds and looks like it went very well. Thank you everyone for organising and participating.

The Board are meeting this Thursday to talk over club business. High on the agenda is the new Pres. Elect and Secretary and club fundraising. Please talk to a board member at lunch this Wednesday or grab the email or phone if you have anything you want to raise.
Speaking of fundraising again... this happened in NZ... food for thought?

Seeking a hallmark project to boost attention and money for PolioPlus during his year as governor of District 9980, Nick Wood picked pumpkins — a variety called the Atlantic Giant, to be specific. Fifty-five Rotarians, family members, and friends competed to grow the greatest gourd from plants that Wood started and distributed beginning in late October of last year. The goal: “to have fun, and this was heaps of fun,” Wood says. The grand weigh-in in late April required a forklift when the Rotary Club of Wanaka’s winning pumpkin tipped the scales at more than 357 pounds. With sponsors donating a set amount for each kilogram, the competition yielded more than US$31,000 at current exchange rates, topped with a District Designated Fund contribution of about $6,200, all matched 2-to-1 by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. “The biggest success was the almost doubling of our club and personal contributions to polio from the previous year,” says Wood.

I am looking forward to getting back to meetings, I am really grateful to the board and Sgt Bob for looking after you all so well! Like most Presidents I'm acutely aware of how little I am needed thanks to the team effort of everyone

Giving up the Gaspers.

So far we have had 19 members who have pledged a total of $435 to the club if Matt stays off the smokes until after the end of the Rotary year. I think we had 20 members at the last meeting and the only member who didn’t sign up for the pledge was Matt…..although I did offer him the opportunity to be first on the list….

Clearly we need to give other members time to make a pledge which can be done by sending me a txt with the pledged amount.
Once all pledges are in, I will ask for payment to the Club.

Remember, all funds go to the Club, and if Matt weakens he is required to repay each member ….. at first glance it doesn’t really look fair to Matt, but on deeper analysis it’s good for Rotary, good for the environment and good for Matt - and the vote to back the plan was almost unanimous!

Boré’s View.

This week our guest was District Governor Kathy Rivett.  The great thing about getting a visit from our District Governor is that, for one week, Boré draws a cartoon of the DG rather than a cartoon of one of our club members.  Imagine Rotary?  Imagine what cartoon Boré might have drawn if the DG hadn't come to visit us!  Sincerely Boré, I say thank you.

Minutes.

Attendance: Nooka declared we had twenty members and ‘one very attractive guest’ in attendance.  Our attractive guest was DG Kathy Rivett.

Meal: Parma on a bed of chips with a side of salad.

This week our guest was the District Governor.  She mentioned that her club had ditched the invocation because some people were not comfortable saying ‘amen’.  Your correspondent kicked of our meeting with a ‘for good fellowship and the privilege to serve we give thanks’, to which Sgt Bob responded with a very reverent ‘no worries’.

In reports;

·       Matt informed us that the Lake Pertobe Tree Planting will be on Wednesday 23rd of November between 10.00 and 2.00.  We will share a barbecue with the other Rotary clubs there instead of our normal Wednesday meeting.

·       Robbo bumped into Father Scott, who is very busy but doing well (see below).

·       Robbo also informed us that Gerald is now three weeks out of his cardiac surgery and steadily improving.

·       Bob reported that the myeloma nursing scholarship has been awarded and this will be announced publicly very soon.

·       Lew asked members to sign up to our ‘Give up the Gaspers’ fundraiser.  This exciting health initiative should raise some much-needed funds to support the club.  Register your pledge with Lew if you haven’t already.

·       Nooka gave us a footy tipping update; ‘I have no idea where the money is or who the treasurer is.’  Hopefully it will hold up in court.

·       Malcolm brought us the news that the Merri School have their auction on the 26th of November.  The club is putting together a table so let Malcolm know if you would like to join us in support of the Merri School.

·       Rob reported nine Rotarians toured SWI, K9000 and Pacific Materials Handling.  Thanks to Peter and Rob for organising the event.  Midfield is on the radar for the next vocational visit.

Paul Reilly conducted an excellent fines session based on historic dates before our District Governor took to the podium.

DG Kathy Rivett is from the RC of Alfredton.  She runs a travel business.  Her club, the RC of Alfredton, is ten years old and very much had tried to change the traditional idea of a Rotary club.  Alfredton do not have a toast, do not do fines, have no invocation and usually do not share a meal.  They have no board – all decisions are made collectively by club members.  They do not have a sergeant because of concern about sergeants telling off colour jokes.  They have 29 members including 7 men.  Every member does the Rotary Leadership Institute course so that all members have similar knowledge about Rotary.

DG Kathy challenged us with the year's theme ‘imagine Rotary’.  She challenged us to get all members involved in projects, inspire new members to become involved, promote Rotary in our community and become part of the Rotary story.

DG Kathy invited us to the District Conference in Ballarat on 24th-26th of March next year.  Kathy gave us a piece of a jigsaw puzzle to return to her at the District Conference.  She mentioned that we ‘would not want to be the only club represented by a missing piece at the District Conference’.  She might have misread us slightly there.

We thank Kathy for taking the time to visit us and present as guest speaker.

Brain Cancer Fundraiser.

EXCITING NEWS!!!! Someone, who wishes to remain a mystery, has offered to match dollar for dollar for all monies we can raise. Register and bring mates. This is a big opportunity to get behind Brendan and his family and help the Brain Cancer Foundation keep advancing their research into a cure - there is currently No Cure.

From Brendan and Linda - This year our family is walking to remember Matty who passed away in Feb 2019 from brain cancer aged 26.
We will again walk from The Pavillion to Granny’s Grave and return to remember Matty. Feel free to join us on this walk as we raise money to research this disease that has no effective treatment or cure. The average life span of someone diagnosed with brain cancer is 14 months.
Please help to make this a treatable disease and remember Matty.

December 3rd 10:00 AM leaving from The Pavillion.

Rotten Returns.

I'm not into halloween. You never know what you are going to get during trick or treat, but apparently our bulletin editor is a big fan.

Football update.

The great thing about footy at the moment is that there are two groups of supporters celebrating a premiership.  Geelong supporters are celebrating the 2022 premiership.  Also, Melbourne supporters are still celebrating the 2021 premiership.  Melbourne's players have been celebrating all year.  Robbo sends us this snap and writes;

Scott having a quiet moment with the Melbourne 2021 premiership sticker.  Great to see him, especially with a decent haircut.  He’s been the face of the Anglican church in the western district for a while now, that’s his absence from our meetings.  …  I actually thought he was officiating at a funeral I took my mother to in Queenscliff on Monday, but all the hair belonged to a female minister!

Truly blessed are the Christians; Petracca and Salem.

Quote of the week.

Philomena Cunk, reflecting at Christmas time,

'The great thing about Jesus was that his birth was only just the very start of his life.'

Medical treatment.

You know when people tell you; ‘I have terrible back/neck/sciatic pain and I have been seeing my doctor/physiotherapist/chiropractor/naturopath for years to treat it.  He/she is brilliant, I don’t know what I would do without them’.

Lew understands and sends us this report.

Rotary Horse Racing Report.

Shoe horned between two minor races; the Cox Plate and the Manikato Stakes, was the prestigious Tesio Stakes at Moonee Valley.  Sirileo was carrying top weight but still looked a good chance in the group 3 race.  She got to the front early but was chased down, still finishing a commendable third.  Her record is now seven wins and five places from eighteen starts, including a good smattering of wins and places in group races.  How good is this?

Ten years ago.

Ten years ago, Bruce completed his 'round the bay' to raise money for the Smith Family.  The bay in questions however was Hobsons Bay, not Port Phillip Bay.  Our Charter President cycled from Port Melbourne to Williamstown before posing for a photo with some people who were more sensibly dressed than he was.  Well done Bruce.
