Our Commanding Officer.
The combined Wine tasting and farewell to Lea evening at Bohemia was a full house (numbers wise!) and a great success. It was good to see two of Lea’s non-Rotarian host parents there, being the Smith and Walsh families and in addition James brought along Adam and Brooke to join in the fun.

Big Bob was the organiser but when I glanced around the room, I couldn’t see him in attendance. I couldn’t help but notice Junior’s shirt (or was it pyjamas) and I am sure there will be a photo in the Bulletin to better describe it.  Turns out Big Bob was in Darwin, presumably to help Robbo celebrate his 60th birthday!

For his part, Robbo went to TIO to see the Demons once again snatch defeat from the very jaws of victory, although it did take them all game to do it!

Lea will give her presentation at this week’s meeting and next weekend she will be departing Oz to return to France. Wednesday will be the time to say goodbye.

We are fast closing in on the end of the Rotary year – the changeover dinner is the next important function – if you have forgotten the date it is 29 June!!

Cheers

Lew
Minutes.
Attendance: Nooka reported a deceptive 29 members present (it seemed like more).  We had four guests; Lea, Adam Kent, Jan McKenzie and Jon Vertigan.

Meal: After a brief foray into fish last week, our man returned from enemy territory back to his home base of mince with some excellent meatballs this week.

Brendan opened the show with a good joke before introducing our President.  Lew discovered we had no visiting Rotarians before announcing;
  • Vassa Blue had another big win.
  • We have donated $1K to Interplast, $1K to cleft palate, $2K to Australian Rotary Health and $2.5 to the Indian Solar Light project.
  • Brendan has fixed our microphone.  Thank you, Brendan.
In other reports;
  • Tim wanted to know how many of our members had completed courses at the Rotary Leadership Institute.  Penno could count them all on one hand.
  • Tony tried to drum up interest in a horse (see below).
  • Sam gave us an update on the club’s finance.  We have sent a cheque for $6,250 for drought relief.
  • Rob gave us a footy tipping update.  Les is so far in front we might have to start calling him Vassa Blue.
  • Rob also gave us an update on the Find Your Voice choir.  A subcommittee is being set up to explore ways of providing the choir with ongoing funding.
  • Mal advised members that the Auction Committee will meet ‘at some stage’.
  • Someone reminded current and future board members that we have a combined board meeting on June 24th, 12.30pm, in the public bar of the Warrnambool Hotel.  It will be strictly business.
Jan and Adam from Leadership Great South West spoke about their projects with local veterans.  They spoke particularly about the experience of young veterans in our area.  They believe there are at least 100 young veterans of recent wars in our community.  See below for more information.  We thank Jan and Adam for their presentation.  Hopefully the club can find a way to assist them in their endeavours.

Gracie conducted an excellent fines session.  He chose politics as the topic because he claimed there had been a recent election, although your correspondent has very little memory of the event.  He capped his excellent fines session off by choosing Penno has next week’s fines session.  I am not saying anything Penno.

Lew and Brendon closed the meeting.  Members put their balaclavas and crampons on and headed back out into the world.
Rotary Horse proposal.
I am pleased to report that there is enough interest in the horse idea to proceed.  If you would like to join us please let me know by this Wednesday 5th.  The plan is for all those who are interested to then have a discussion about our options regarding horses, size of the share etc.  No one need to commit to anything until we have a specific proposal, but please let us know now if you are interested.

If you might be interested in joining us, please let me know by the 5th.  Reply to this email, send me a text on 0418582024, or let me know at a meeting.

Wine night a success.
Last Friday evening forty or more friends of the club enjoyed some good company, good food and good wine.  Our thanks to Bob McMillan for organising the event.  Bob chose not to attend the event himself, a decision Lindsay Bullivant found completely unacceptable.  Thanks also to Steve and all the staff at Bohemia, and to Dru and Virginia from Koonara Wines.  It was also to see Lea there and to be able to farewell her is style.

We thank James for these photos.
Virgina and Rob both understood their roles.
Steve was kind enough to erect a sign to assist Pip.
Ian didn't need a sign, he had a shirt.

Melbourne in Darwin.

There is a joke that goes;

Q. How do you tell a Melbourne supporter in Darwin.

A. The ski gear.

This is unfair of course, as Melbourne supporters blended in beautifully in the top end over the weekend, as Sam Baulch reports;

Schrödinger’s Café.
There is nothing that Warrnambool Central Rotarians love more than a theoretical physics joke.
Thank you to all those who contributed this week.
