Greetings fellow Rotarians.
I was terrific to host DG John Clue at our last meeting. It was fascinating to hear John's perspective on Rotary and it's clubs after having visited virtually all the clubs in our district. We thank John for taking the time to visit us.
It was also great to see Bob McMillan back after his recent illness. We know there are still some members who have not been attending meetings due to health issues, and we look forward to seeing them again soon.
Once again I will plug the Thoroughbred Club Luncheon on Monday 2nd May. Any lunch that is scheduled to finish at four in the afternoon is certainly worth a look. Talk to Hutto to secure your ticket if you haven't already.
It is that time of year when we commemorate our military veterans, fallen soldiers and defence force personnel. We certainly owe all these people and their families a great debt of gratitude.

Rotary Horse Racing Report.
On Saturday Sirileo Miss contested the Vobis Gold Distaff at Caulfield. When you are hand spinning yarn, a distaff is the stick you wind the fiber around that is then used to feed it onto the spindle (see illustration below). Club members like to spin yarns, so a gold distaff would come in handy. It was even hoped that with a gold distaff we might be able to spin straw into gold thread, Rumpelstiltskin style. It is a curious property of pure gold that is welds to itself at room temperature. If we did weave pure gold thread from our gold distaff, all we would end up with is a useless lump of gold. That is the reason why we at Warrnambool Central Racing don’t just throw all our trophies into the same cardboard box. Anyhow, I digress.
Sirileo was unbackable favourite for the race. She drew a wide barrier, had to work hard to get to the front from that position, and then was buffeted all the way down the straight. She still finished a commendable second. The gold distaff alluded us and so we will have to keep spinning yarns in the traditional way.
On Sunday, Power of Song went to Ballarat for the Porter Plant Handicap. Unlike Sirileo the day before, Power was not fancied by the punters prior to the race. However, she got a good start, sat behind the leader for the journey and was only beaten home by one horse. She now has a win and three places from her last four starts. Happy days. I wonder if Porter Plant Hire rents out distaffs?
