This week we have two guests at lunch, please RSVP and come along. It'll be a very informative session with news from Millie, our student headed to the National Youth Science Forum and Donna Koik from the National Heart Foundation. Questions are encouraged!

I recently presented to the Rotary Club of East Warrnambool, an invite to speak to our clubs activities and a little on my military life. It was a very nice evening and I was genuinely proud to be able to say that we have achieved a lot in this first quarter. We are steaming toward the end of the year with even more to do. Speaking to the other clubs, it is clear we have some great traction and are gaining momentum as we continue to recover from the impact COVID restrictions had on us.

I am very grateful for the efforts of everyone for bringing the laughs and mateship back. We are a strong club, let's keep working away at the projects, the heckles, the comebacks and enthusiasm for projects and community that we do so well.

If you haven't registered for the Walk for Brain Cancer yet please do. If you have any questions or suggestions please talk to Brendan. We walk to support the marvellous O'Neil family, Brendan, Linda, Lachie and Ash, in memory of Matt and to raise funds for the research into a cure. Right now there is no cure at all. Walk4BrainCancer - Warrnambool 2022 | Cure Brain Cancer Foundation The more the merrier, it has been a beautiful walk each year and a great opportunity to bring friends and family.

The story behind this photo is truely amazing. Read about it here https://www.rotary.org/en/rotary-members-ukraine-friends-deliver-ambulances-ukrainian-officials?source=rotaryorg_frontpage_hero - It makes me think what we are really capable of when working together.

See you at lunch.

Pickleball.

Clive has very kindly organised a pickleball night for us.  Everybody is welcome; partners, family, friends etc and no experience is necessary.

When: Thursday 1st December, 6.00–8.00pm.

Where: The ARC, Warrnambool.

rsvp: In the Stack app.

Minutes.

Attendance: Nooka reported twenty-two members and that ‘Bob stuffed things up’.  Thanks Nooka.

Meal: Banger and mash in an onion gravy.  Mostly.  As well as the mashed spud there was also mashed something else.  It was green, but it wasn’t smashed avo, and didn’t seem to be spinach.  Your guess is as good as mine.  With something familiar with something completely unidentifiable, it had a touch of the genius of Jason about it.  10/10.

Bob and James opened the meeting before Bob called for reports;

·       Robbo had the pleasure of announcing that we have a new member joining.

·       Matt gave us some dates for upcoming events.  See above.

·       Sam asked members who haven’t renewed their membership to please do so asap.  Nooka advised that members can pay their membership through our square EFTPOS device at the door.

·       Bob announced that the Golden Community Raffle is on again.  We will sell some of the tickets ourselves to raise money for the club.

·       Lew advised members that they can continue to pledge funds for the Give up the Gaspers fundraiser.  Members who have made pledges can pay cash to Lew or pay electronically with Nooka at the door.

·       Malcolm was selling poppys for the RSL.  Well done, Malcolm.

·       Clive will organise a pickleball night at the ARC, on a Thursday night, in two or three weeks.  More details to come.  Members, family and friends welcome.

Matt then announced the winners of the Melbourne Cup sweep.  Lew and yours truly were lucky enough to get the winner.

Nooka, possibly worried about the threat of legal action, decided to pay out on the footy tipping competition.  Ron picked up a very respectable third place.  Rob and Nooka tied for second place.  However, in first place was Robbo, who took home a pineapple and a $100 bottle of wine.  Well done, Robbo.  Nooka then announced the winner of the Grand Final prediction competition.  In all the excitement your correspondent forgot to recall who won.

Nooka and Bob raised $520 for the club with another very entertaining and barely legal footy tipping contest.  Our sincere thanks to Nooka and Bob.

Fines from the floor were followed by the barrel draw, which was won by Francis.  Francis took home the coveted bottle of wine, valued at $100.

The Rotary Foundation.

The Rotary Foundation is a non-profit corporation that supports the efforts of Rotary International to achieve world understanding and peace through international humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchange programs. It is supported solely by voluntary contributions.  The Rotary Foundation is our charity; it is the charity run by Rotarians and supported by contributions from Rotarians.

The foundation was created in 1917 by Rotary International's sixth president, Arch C. Klumph, as an endowment fund for Rotary "to do good in the world." It was started with an initial contribution of US$26.50.  From little things, big things grow.

Brain Cancer Fundraiser.

EXCITING NEWS!!!! Someone, who wishes to remain a mystery, has offered to match dollar for dollar for all monies we can raise. Register and bring mates. This is a big opportunity to get behind Brendan and his family and help the Brain Cancer Foundation keep advancing their research into a cure - there is currently No Cure.

From Brendan and Linda - This year our family is walking to remember Matty who passed away in Feb 2019 from brain cancer aged 26.
We will again walk from The Pavillion to Granny’s Grave and return to remember Matty. Feel free to join us on this walk as we raise money to research this disease that has no effective treatment or cure. The average life span of someone diagnosed with brain cancer is 14 months.
Please help to make this a treatable disease and remember Matty.

December 3rd 10:00 AM leaving from The Pavillion.

Quote of the week.

Your correspondent recently won a door prize at an event.  The prize was a second-hand copy of a marvelous book titled ‘Invitation to a Royal Wedding’ by Kathryn Spink, published in the year of the joyous occasion, 1981.  There are so many wonderful lines in the book that was difficult to pick just one.  However, I have gone with this one;

‘The initiative in the wedding preparations, the Dean (The Very Reverend Alan Webster, Dean of St Paul’s Cathedral) insists, has come very much from the Prince of Wales and his bride.  The 2,500 invited guests will include amongst their number personal friends of the couple such as Colonel and Camilla Parker-Bowles.’

Rotary Horse Racing Report.

Sirileo Miss ran in the group 2 Matriarch Stakes over 2000 meters on Saturday.  Sirileo, as she normally does, got out of the gates and went hell for leather from the get go.  She led for most of the race before being finally reigned in with the finish in sight.  Fifth in a group 2 was still a very impressive performance.  Representing Warrnambool Central Rotary in the Flemington Owners Enclosure was Anne and Peter Lynch and Geraldine and Peter Kenna.  Peter Kenna kindly sent us this snap from the track.
Modern Technology.

Modern technology is everywhere, all the time.  Despite Elon Musk's best efforts to get everyone off Twitter, it seems like our devices have become inseparable from us.

Lew reports;

Further, Pip reports;

Ten years ago.

Ten years ago, the club booked a guest speaker to speak on the topic of preventive healthcare and staying healthy.  However, the speaker had to cancel at the last minute because she was sick.  In other news, Rowan got a $20 gift voucher from AAMI for being a safe driver.  Unfortunately, that didn’t cover the costs of the two speeding tickets he had also received so far that month.
