Rotarians

We had another Rotary Central happy hour and Covid catchup on Wednesday 2nd September with 14 Rotarians participating in a lighthearted zoom meeting. Everyone was well behaved and gave a little insight into what they have been doing during the stage 3 restrictions. For those of you who couldn’t make it, here is a quick snapshot of what you missed (with a bit of poetic license)

The Tickler – has been hunting and gathering in Nelson with mulloway on the menu

Freshly – he’s selling up and turning gypsy

Ann – has been teaching herself the ukelele and is also selling the ranch

Greg – has been bowling with Big Bob and admiring Knuckles skills on the green. Greg has also has purchased a smart TV and needs a teenager to get it working.

Compass – survived parent teacher interviews and expressed his desire to publish a mince recipe book

Bullant – has been lodging objections to the latest development in Mortlake Rd.

Penno – has his own private chef so we probably won’t see him again at a lunchtime meeting

Chill – has been growing a Covid beard and is unrecognizable (according to Ann). Chill also told a fishing story from the past featuring a very seasick Tony Robinson

Lindsay – has been singlehandedly keeping the wine industry afloat

Quincy – added a new garden bed full of quince trees

Lew – added his political views to the current crisis

Tony – gave us a more detailed report on his trip to Allansford

Haysey – is still supporting the Cats, apparently the greatest team of all

We plan now to have another happy hour catchup next fortnight in lieu of the lunchtime zoom gathering (in the words of Survivor “the tribe has spoken”) so please keep your diary free for Wednesday 16th September at 6pm. I will send out an invite and would love to see as many of you zoom in for a happy hour.

Last week I virtually flew to Toronto and attended the Club Runner annual virtual conference 2020 which held sessions on rotary websites, training, designing bulletins, virtual events, managing volunteer tasks and online financials. If anyone is interested in looking at the recorded sessions, please let me know and I’ll email the link.

That’s all from me, stay safe

Cheers

Ronnie

Give Every Child a Future.

Are you looking for an international Centenary Rotary project to support? If so, I’d like to draw to your attention the ‘Give Every Child a Future’ program which is now underway in the Pacific with our partner UNICEF. It is designed to introduce three life-saving immunisations to children and young women across nine Pacific Island nations. A summary flyer, which please share appropriately, is attached.

In the current global situation, it is even more important that disease prevention measures such as these are established in underprivileged environments. This is one of the largest projects ever to be supported by the Rotary Foundation (budget of US$3.9M), and it has already been recognised by many Clubs and Districts, but it does require us to keep up the momentum of fundraising, so we are appealing to all Rotarians to participate and spread the word among their networks.

I hope your Club will consider supporting this great work. A great line to use is: “Every A$45 you give will protect one child”.

Yours in Rotary service.

Robert.

Walk for Brain Cancer.

As you are aware our son passed away to a horrible disease in 2019. In his final months Matt expressed a desire to support the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation. We walked at Albert Park Lake in support of this great cause and continued this on last year in Matts memory.

This year the walk is on again but it is a virtual walk this year and the idea (Covid restrictions allowing) is that people get together where ever they are and walk for this cause to raise money.

A group of us will be gathering on 27th Sept most likely at the breakwater to walk in Matts memory.

If you would like to come for the walk you are most welcome. If you would also like to donate to support the research into this terrible disease that has no cure that would also be appreciated.

We have created a team on the Cure Brain Cancer Foundation called Team Mattyo.

Thanks to the club for their support.

Legacy

This year has been hard on so many people.  Spare a thought for Legacy, which cannot fundraise for their important work in the normal way.  Di Officer has sent us this request.  If you are able to assist Legacy, I am sure it would be greatly appreciated.

Your club has always been super supportive of Legacy and hoped some of your members might have a couple of spare dollars to donate? Badges and bears are available for purchase and I could deliver them Covid style or Legacy’s Bank details are on the attached card if they would prefer to do online banking?

Everyone is finding it hard to fundraise this year so hope you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you, all members of Warrnambool Central Rotary Club.

Cheers

Zoom happy hour.

As our President noted, last week 14 members caught up on Wednesday evening for a ‘happy hour’ catch up.

The pandemic has been very difficult for many people, and our club members are no exception.  Two weeks ago we learned that Bruce was having to wait for his new truck to arrive.  This week we learned that Penno was having to wait for his personal French chef, Fabian, to cook him his dinner.  Sacré bleu et mon dieu!  All joke aside, it is a wonderful thing Kate and Graham are doing to help Fabian.  If you would like a French feast cooked at your home and help Fabian at the same time, contact Penno.

We also learned about Lindsay Bullivant’s troubles with his neighbors, specifically the plan for him to have 68 of them.  Even though Robbo was not able to join us, there was a detailed discussion of Robbo’s fishing trip with Sergio Bacchetti.  Robbo laid on plenty of burley in the traditional way before Sergio reeled in a single fish.  No doubt Sergio appreciated Robbo’s assistance and enjoyed his fish that evening.

Matt reminded everyone he is putting together a Warrnambool Central cookbook composed entirely of recipes for mince.  If you have any favorite recipes to contribute Matt would appreciate hearing from you.

In summary, if you would like a beautiful French meal cooked for you, call Penno.  If you would like ocean fresh fish cooked for you in the French style, call Robbo then call Penno.  If you want to smell 68 people cooking all at once, call Lindsay B.  Failing all that, if you would like to cook some mince at home, D.I.Y. style, keep an eye out for The Compass’ book.

Please join us in two weeks for another Rotary Central ‘happy hour’.

Recipe of the week.

Penno talking about his French chef and Matt talking about his mince cookbook made your correspondent feel sentimental about all the Rotary meetings we have been missing.  Consequently, I have included this traditional recipe.  Feel free to include it in your book Matt.

Lourd-comme-du-plomb dans le vol-au-vent.

(Bouchées avec boeuf haché)

Chop an onion and fry it in a pan with some olive oil.  Add ground beef to the pan and brown.  Fill vol-au-vents with the cooked mince.  Top with grated cheddar cheese and place in under a hot grill for several minutes.  Serve with thawed frozen mixed veg.

Always remember what Childs and Beck wrote about vol-au-vents in their famous French cookbook,

‘Unfortunately, …in the hands of the profane and cynical, gummy sauces, clumsy flavouring, and bad pastry have ruined its reputation.’

Perish the thought.

Geelong's bunnies.

Last Sunday Essendon played Geelong, and they were made to look silly, particularly in the first half.  Some excellent positioning of the sponsors logo made Woosha also look a bit like a bunny during his post-game press conference.
