Rotten Returns.

President Matt got a bit of a shock at the last meeting after finding out that Coke can be a major contributor to kidney stones after consuming his normal two cans. Luckily Matt was able to calm his nerves by having a cigarette.

There is a perception that Rotary is a bigger network than the Mafia. Listening to Stu and Lindsay at our table comparing notes about their respective visits to Sicily, I wondered if they were bringing the locals up to speed. I don't mind a good vendetta so I reckon I would fit right into Sicilian life. I'd probably have to be renamed Rotteni Ronaldo. I am already a Godfather to a couple of people.

Mt Etna the volcano also came up in the conversation. I haven't been there, but I did drive through Kilauea, the active volcano on the big island of Hawaii, in 1976. I must have been young and silly as it was bubbling away around us at the time and erupts every two or three years without warning. I have also driven through Tower Hill a few times with no regard to my personal safety.

It was a light yarding at last week's meeting. Interesting that out of the twenty members who went on the dairy excursion the previous week, only eight of those were able to make it last week. Perhaps the other twelve were still trying to find their way back, either that or word got around that the president-elect was about to be chosen and they didn't want to be named. Congratulations to Bono for putting his hand up.

Boré’s View.

This week we learned that Bono has agreed to be President-elect, Paul President-elect-elect, and The Voice President-elect-elect-elect.

Boré always gives us great cartoons, but this week I think he has really nailed the analogy perfectly.

Being president-elect is fantastic because you are optimistic and think everything is going to go well.  As Boré noted, when you are president-elect you fail to notice that the train you are on is actually a roller coaster and the wheels are coming off.

Matt is happy because all he has to do is hold on grimly for another eight months and then he can put on his parachute, hand the yoke to someone else, leap over the side, and stop worrying about when the whole thing is going to go off the rails and end in tragedy.

There are no past-presidents in Boré’s cartoon; they either left the carnival as soon as the ride ended, never to be seen again, or are in the bar across the road, drinking hard liquor and trading war stories.

So, in summary, congratulations to Brendan, Paul and Jon.  We look forward to the years ahead safe in the knowledge that nothing can possibly go wrong.

We thank Boré for another great cartoon.

Minutes

Attendance: Nooka noted that last week at the dairy farm ‘there was a fair bit of shit flying around’ and so it was just like an average meeting.  Nooka counted fifteen members and one guest; Chris Steele.  Other members counted the numbers but included Nooka, and so arrived at a figure of sixteen members present.

Meal: Lindsay avoided the guinea pigs and tucked into a steak with vegies, gravy and a bread roll.

Stand in sarg Bono introduced The Compass to get the show on the road.  Matt announced;

·       The visit to The Union dairy was a complete success.  Thank you and congratulations to Gerald for organising the event.

·       Colin McKenna is not well.  Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.  Of course Colin has since passed away and we extend our condolences to his family.

·       We are proceeding to pay the donations pledged at the end of the last Rotary year.  We will donate $1,000 each to Interplast, Rotary Health Australia, Anglicare, and the SES.

·       We will donate $250 to support Matty Stewart and Dan Teehan and their efforts to raise money for CJD research.

·       The club will invest $500 in seed funding to advance the new can recycling sorting table project.

·       The Christmas Party is provisionally set for Friday evening, 13th December at Matt’s place.

Matt then announced that we have a President Elect locked in for next year and a President Elect Elect locked in for the year after.  Congratulations to Brendan and Paul and we wish them every success.

In other reports;

·       Paul gave us a treasurer’s report.  The TOMRA can recycling scheme has netted the club $14,300 so far.

·       Boré reported that the rotating dinner will now be a dinner with diners rotating around a table at a local restaurant.  There are a few places left so contact Boré if you would like to join them.

·       Tony D gave an update on the pharmaceutical blister pack recycling project.

·       Matt communicated a message from Hutto that a generous citizen has donated $500 to the club.

Members enjoyed fines from the floor, conveniently paid for in a range of international currencies, before the barrel was drawn.  Actually the barrel was drawn about ten times before Malcolm claimed the prize and we all were finally free to depart.

Gerald's Travel Diary.

Gerald is somewhere in Asia.  I have no idea where but, judging from the photo, it looks amazing.
David's Travel Diary.

Last week we showed a picture of David eating a deep fried guinea pig.  Members naturally wondered how it came to pass that David found himself eating the guinea pig.  This week we bring you the full story of that meal.

David's Travel Diary part 2.

Buonas Dias from your correspondent in Peru. We hiked to Machu Picchu yesterday and returned today. It is a 550 year old royal town perched on the side of a mountain. Spectacular mountain scenery. The town below the ruins is only accessible by train and has the sacred river the Urrabamba flowing through it. My next report will be from the Amazon. Adios for now.

Editors note: we are not sure why Machu Picchu is now in ruins, but a plausible explanation would be that it burned down due to a lack of installed fire hydrants.

Rotary Horse Racing Report

Last Saturday Sirileo Miss ran in the Alinta Energy Crystal Mile at Moonee Valley on Cox Plate Day.  It was very exciting just to have a runner on the day.  Shane Keogh saw Sirileo trial on the Monday before in Warrnambool and was very upbeat about her prospects at The Valley.  Shane is glass half full when it comes to Sirileo.  I have to admit I am a pessimist and have become glass phial half empty about the horse.

Pundits did not like Sirileo’s chances coming into the race and she started at long odds.  I looked in The Age for Chris Roots tips, hoping for some encouragement, but The Age appears to have sacked Roots after he tipped Sirileo last time.

To cut a long story short, Sirileo came last.  To rub salt into the wounds, her stable mate Plenty of Ammo won the race, reminding us of what Sirileo used to be like.  Still, it could have been worse.  We could have had shares in Via Sistina.  Via Sistina, as you probably know, won the Cox Plate by eight lengths.  I mainly blame the jockey.  As Sirileo’s connections can attest, winning a prominent race by a big margin only attracts the unwanted attention of the stewards.  Tricky questions get asked about why certain things may or may not be turning up in the horse’s blood and the next thing you know the horse has been banned and her career is as good as over.  By all means win the race, but you get paid the same if you win it by half a length or eight. Don't they teach the handbrake in jockey school any more?

Anyhow, back to Sirileo.  No doubt some owners like Shane are keen to push on.  A few I speak to think we are just throwing good money after bad now.  In other words, we are enjoying horse racing.

More exciting updates as they come to hand.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, the club held its annual car rally.  This snap captures our President at the time, Francis, taking a ride in the Beemer with Bruce.  We miss you Bruce.  Eagle eyed readers would have also noticed Brad ‘Slippery’ Pole shoe horning himself into Bruce’s MG in the background, not without some difficulty.
