The Brighton RC project continues. 15 pallets are now located in the warehouse at Bega Koroit. I am planning to move the pallets either Thu or Friday this week. I will be looking for volunteers to assist when the date is confirmed. I will need some trailers or Ute's capable of carrying 1 or 2 pallets as well as arms and legs to manually unstack the pallets and transfer to the Mailers Flat fire shed. Pictures of the goods in the Bega warehouse are below.
On Saturday a number of central Rotarians joined the other Warrnambool rotary clubs at the site of the old Bromfield St weir to plant 1000 plants. The plantings were completed in record time and the sausage sizzle had to be brought forward.
Congratulations to Jon Vertigan for organising our club to attend. There will be a combined clubs meeting in the future to discuss the project.
On Tuesday I will attend a combined presidents meeting to discuss possible joint projects.
See you Wednesday.
Regards
Bono
Upcoming Events.
August 15th - Maths and Science Expo, Terang High School.
New way to donate to brain cancer research.
Gracey has kindly forwarded us this message
As Brendan has probably mentioned, The Wolfy Foundation has now teamed up with Matty’s Hope for future fundraising. All funds collected will go directly to The Childrens’ Cancer Institute. The funds will support a brain cancer research project. We would be most grateful if are able to continue with your generous monthly donation. Members of the four Warrnambool Rotary Clubs got out again this weekend and planted another 1,000 trees along the Merri riverbank. It was pleasing to see that, despite the past twelve months being amongst the dryest on record, much of what we planted last year at the old weir site has survived. A big thank you to all those Rotarians and friends who came down to help. Thank you once again to the Glenelg Hopkins Catchment Management Authority for all their wonderful assistance. Thanks also to James and the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East for bringing down their barbecue trailer and cooking us lunch.
Maria came down and gave us a hand.
Bono was keen to see how East’s barbecue trailer performed down
the highway at 100kph, but he was banned from going near it.
Beef Wellington at the Jellie’s tonight.
Minutes.
Attendance: Glenn pencilled in 18 members and one guest, Maria.
Meal: Fish and chips. Absolutely first rate.
David launched us with the now traditional lawyer joke before introducing ‘Mr 16% attendance’, our President, Brendan. Bono reintroduced himself to members and reported;
The club held a board meeting the previous night.
The presidents of the four Warrnambool Rotary clubs will meet on the 18th of August to discuss possible future joint projects. Please talk to Bono if you have any suggestions for projects.
RAWCS has made available some $500 credit cards for drought affected farmers. Brendan is hoping we can assist in directing them to where they are needed.
The Brighton Rotary Club, in partnership with ourselves, have delivered 15 pallets of assorted goods to be distributed to farmers. The good are currently at Bega in Koroit. We will need to transport them to the Mailers Flat fire station, set up the goods like a little shop, and then man this ‘shop’. Volunteers will be coming from the Rotary Clubs of Brighton and North Brighton to assist.
Food is being delivered by Six Seas/Sick Seas to six fire stations in the area. We will try to piggy back on this project.
Surf is fine and recovering from his recent spill. He towed his caravan to Broome, presumably to make room in his driveway.
Our club Christmas party will be at Brendan’s on Friday December 5th.
Construction of the can sorting trailer is about to begin.
In other reports;
Jon reminded members we will be planting trees again with the GHCMA and the other Warrnambool Rotary clubs on Saturday, 9.00am at the old Bromfield Street Weir site.
Robbo reminded members to do what they can to engage with people to attract new members.
Gerald reminded members we need volunteers to assist the Neil Porter Legacy day in Terang on August 15th.
Boré has been speaking to Jill Oliver from ROMAC. She has proposed that we might assist a 4 year-old girl with two club feet. We would need to find a surgeon willing to perform the required surgery and host the accompanying parent.
Ron advised that Nooka has imposed a strict media ban over the footy tipping results for the last few weeks of the season. Nooka breached this ban to inform Ron that he picked 9 last week.
Matt spoke about Elizabeth Quinlan’s funeral and reminded members of our need to care for Bill during this very difficult time.
Maria then gave us an update. She has moved to a new host family, the Body’s, in Winslow and reports they are really looking after her.
Brendan gave us a report on his recent holiday. After destroying one of the axles of his caravan near Port Augusta, he had an unscheduled extended stay in that fine town. His caravan was repaired by the cook at the Port Augusta gaol. While this might at first seem surprising, if you turn it around it makes more sense; the food in Port Augusta Gaol is prepared by a caravan mechanic. Funnily enough, I was only thinking about the Central Court just the other day.
Bono informed us that Linda and himself passed the time in Port Augusta by riding their bikes along a bike path each day. They passed the severed head of a murder victim for days before it was finally brought to the attention of police. In fairness to Brendan, if he had realised the severed head was from a dead person, he would have contacted the police much sooner.
All that could be salvaged from Brendan's caravan.
Robbo observed to Pip that ‘I’m coming off your mushrooms this morning’ before stepping up to conduct an excellent fines session based on our largely non-existent knowledge of Brasil.
The barrel was drawn and Glenn won the free lunch voucher. Glenn takes payments at the door, so he can award himself a free lunch voucher anytime he likes.
Tennis Club News.
This week Lew reports on a rather regrettable incident that occurred at the Tennis Club recently. Robbo was seen mowing the grass without a tie on. The matter has been referred to the Tennis Club disciplinary committee and Robbo will be asked to show cause as to why his Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club membership should not be revoked.
Fines Update.
The club has tasked Robbo with investigating who has been clogging our copper pot and fines box with foreign currency. Some Peruvian soles were recovered recently and Robbo noted ‘…suspects all on the head table. Bono and DJ are both leading from the front and doing a great job on the cheap!’
Robbo is also investigating the deposit of some Indonesia rupiah. Robbo is highly suspicious off this correspondent, who returned from Bali recently. On behalf of the club Robbo asked me some tough questions and then, as my defense attorney, advised me not to answer them.
Lew negotiates new trade deal.
Recently the Australian government, recognising Lew's expertise in agriculture, engaged him to assist with the negotiations for a new trade deal with the United States. Lew is happy to report that an agreement may be close at hand.
Ten Years Ago.
Last week David Jellie gave us the grim news that he has nearly run out of lawyer jokes. Fortunately ten years ago Pip sent us this one.
A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of $10,000,000. His book keeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing and would therefore never have to testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about the missing $10 million, he takes along his lawyer, who knows sign language.
The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the money is."
The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido: "Where's the money?"
Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about."
The lawyer tells the Godfather: "He says he doesn't know what you are talking about."
The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's head and says, "Ask him again or I'll kill him!"
The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him."
Guido trembles and signs back ,"OK! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house."
The Godfather asks the lawyer: "What did he say?"
The lawyer replies, "He says you don't have the balls to pull the trigger."
