Greetings! A friendly reminder that we are NOT meeting for lunch this week. We are invited to join the RC of Warrnambool for dinner on TUESDAY night in a joint meeting. The students of the National Youth Science Forum, including our own Millie Barling, will present on their resent experience attending it. RSVP today on Stack Teams App if you haven't already.

Thanks to Bob and everyone that attended the AGM. The 2023-2024 Board will be in the good hands of:

President - Rob

*President Elect - Matt

(this is a position that remains open to anyone who wants to step up)

Secretary - Brendan

Treasurer - Paul R

Youth - Greg

Environment and Foundation - Tony D

International - Boré

Club Service - Bob

Community Service - Les

Vocation - Gerald

Membership - Robbo

We have three months left of this year, and I am so grateful for the wonderful effort of the current board and all of you. I am going to do a tally of the contribution we've made in man-hours, funds introduced through fundraising and donations, the impact we've made supporting Myeloma Australia and Walk 4 Brain Cancer, and the contributions we've all made to the clubs healthy state. I thought I would have that ready for this report, but it's a lot to add up! I might get Nooka to give me a hand, to ensure a full and accurate account.

Thanks to Tony for taking the puzzle piece to District Conference! We were spared the wall of shame.

Hope to see you at dinner!

Minutes.

Attendance: Our treasurer reported 16 eating meals and all meals were paid for. Notice the difference between the solution to a mathematical problem given by an engineer as opposed to the solution to a mathematical problem given by an accountant.  We had zero visiting Rotarians and a similar number of guests.

Meal: meatballs in a Mexican style sauce with guacamole, sour cream, and corn chips all on a bed of rice.  Very tasty.

Bob and James got the show on the road.  In reports;

·       James noted the passing of Francis’ father and extended our condolences.

·       Greg reminded members that our meeting next week will be a joint meeting with the RC of Warrnambool.  Tuesday, 6.00pm at the Warrnambool Footy Club.  Please rsvp in the Stack App.  There will be no Wednesday meeting next week.

·       James spoke about the possibility of having a working bee at Loved and Shared to assist them with the repair of some donated goods.

·       Bob informed us that the Golden Community Raffle raises an impressive $23,000 plus in the Warrnambool Community for community organisations.  The cub has received some very positive feedback from some of these groups.

·       Bob is proposing to hold a bowls session immediately after our Wednesday meeting one week soon.  Stay tuned.  He suggested that we would be able to borrow the bowls left behind by bowls club members who have died and left their bowls at the club.

·       Bob is also proposing that we hold a picnic in the Botanic Gardens soon.  Presumably if anyone has died and left their lunch in the gardens it is finders keepers.

·       Malcolm thanked those members who helped at the Francis foundation recently.

·       Brendan informed members that Bruce is recovering from pneumonia and his energy is now returning.  He does need to move all the Rotary stuff out of his old garage at work.

·       Bob reported that Nooka is winning the footy tipping with 7winners.  Also on 7 is Dillo.  Rob, Paul and Gracey have 6.  Pip capped off a good week for Hawthorn supporters by picking 2.

The club then held its Annual General Meeting.

We were just short of a quorum so Rob phoned in from the ophthalmic surgeon’s operating table and was able to record his attendance just before the anaesthetic kicked in.  The treasurer’s report and the auditor’s report from Sinclair Wilson were accepted.  Our president-elect is Rob Harris (who did not audibly object when his name was suggested), our secretary is Brendan O’Neill, and our treasurer is Paul Reilly.  Congratulations and thank you to Rob, Brendan, and Paul.  Bob conducted an efficient AGM that allowed plenty of all-important O’Brien time after its completion.

Matt conducted an excellent fines from the floor based on the life of Elvis Presley before the barrel was drawn and Robbo won the bottle of wine.  Curiously, Robbo, who has always maintained that his numbered ball was not in the barrel, continued to argue that his ball was not in the barrel even after it had been drawn out.

District Conference report.

Last weekend your correspondent attended the District Conference in Ballarat.  The event was a great credit to DG Kathy Rivett and her organising committee.  Guest speakers included Mr. Anthony Holmes, director of craniofacial surgery at the Children's Hospital, author John Marsden and tennis commentator Jelena Dokic.  They were all riveting speakers (if the DG will excuse the pun).  An interesting innovation was that the Saturday afternoon session was available to the public.  This gave a large number of people from outside Rotary an exposure to Rotary and the ticket sales raised money for a local domestic violence charity.

At one point a Rotarian from Geelong approached me and claimed that our club had won some sort of award and that someone from district was looking for a member of our club to hand the award to.  The whole thing sounded completely implausible and I didn't follow it up.

Also of note, there was a jigsaw 'wall of shame' at the front door.  Clubs were given a piece from a jigsaw earlier in the Rotary year and asked to return it at the District Conference.  The board was set up so you could clearly see which clubs had either no representatives at the conference or had, perish the thought, irresponsibly lost their jigsaw piece.  Of interest, the Rotary Clubs of Ballarat, Ballarat East and Alfredton had either not turned up or lost their jigsaw pieces.  Alfredton, which is a suburb of Ballarat, was a particular surprise because that is the DG's own club.  You can't get good help these days.  Even more surprising was that, for once, we were not on the 'wall of shame'.

Dine with the RI President-elect.

Lew has kindly passed on this invitation to dine with the RI President elect Gordon McInally in Mount Gambier.  Pip has already packed his swag and booked a car parking spot outside the venue.
Walking Wounded.

Robbo sent me these snaps a week ago and I forgot to put them in last week.  Robbo suggests Bim and his mates tone down the feral club thing just a little bit.

Rotary Horse Racing report.

Sirileo Miss raced again this weekend.  The Wilde Racing team had nominated her for both the group 1 Australian Cup and the group 2 Sunline Stakes.  The stables were clearly not sure if Sirileo was group 1 standard and thought she was more likely to be competitive in the group 2 race.  Accordingly, she was run in the Sunline Stakes at Moonie Valley on Friday night.

So, was Sirileo competitive at a group 2 standard?  Does a chicken have lips?  No, she wasn't at a group 2 standard.  She was much better than that.  She put the rest of the field to the sword in another dominant performance.  To quote the race caller.

‘But Sirileo Miss, with 100 meters to go, has dropped them.  She’s going great guns, she’ll run all night.  Sirileo Miss has bolted in.’

The day started with the team at Wilde Racing not at all sure if Sirileo could handle a group 1 race.  The day ended, I might suggest, with someone at the stables going through the racing calendar highlighting everything with ‘group 1 1600m’ next to its name.  The next few months look as exciting and tantalising as any we have experienced at Warrnambool Central Racing.  Next stop; the group 1 Coolmore Legacy at Royal Randwick on April 8th.

If you would like to be part of our syndicate going forward, please talk to me this week.
