President's Report.

Hello all,

At the Board Meeting last week, we made some decisions regarding donations – our club finances are quite strong at the moment, and we have plenty in reserve after the following donations were decided,
  • Anglicare                                      $1,000
  • Interplast                                      $1,000
  • Australian Rotary Health       $1,000
  • SES                                                 $2,000
  • An ‘International project’       $3,000
The international project is in the hands of International Director Bore who will choose a worthy project and come to the board with his recommendation.

We have been asked by the Rotary Club of Warrnambool if we can assist with a project that they are running in Papua New Guinea, maybe this can be in addition to a project chosen by Bore?

As I said at the beginning our funds are relatively strong at the moment, and it looks like we will have a strong income going forwards through the recycling of cans project and it’s too late for me to start pushing a major fund raiser in my year as President but food for thought going forwards…

The changeover is only four weeks away (Friday 28th June) so the Directors are all busy getting their reports ready for the Annual report – if any member wishes to add to the report just talk to Matt Northeast who is putting it all together.

See you all at the meeting.
Host wanted.

Hello Rob,

Re: Enhance Work Experience home billeting

I am looking for a Rotary family who could host a male Year 10 student who is completing work experience in Warrnambool at One Day Studios from Monday 24th to Fri 28th June.
Host parents would need to have Volunteer Declaration completed (attached) by their Rotary Club compliance officer and all over 18 year olds living in the home would need Working with Children.

Could you please take this to your members this week???

I am happy to answer questions via email or telephone (please leave a message and I will call back as sometimes I can’t take calls when I am working).

Many thanks,
Marg

Boré’s View / Push-up Challenge.

This week Gracey encouraged club members to join the Push-up Challenge.  To complete the challenge, members need to complete 3249 push-ups between the 5th and 29th of June.  The challenge aims to raise money and awareness for mental health causes.

Boré has long been an advocate of physical activity to promote health, but even he describes the challenge as ‘suicidal.’  Yes, only an idiot would sign up for the Push-up Challenge.  Naturally, your humble correspondent signed up straight away.

If you want to join us register through the Push-up Challenge website or app and search for the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central group.  Actually, you don't necessarily need to do push ups, you can do sit-ups or squats instead.  You can also just sign up for half the number of reps; 1625 instead of 3249.

Please consider joining us and you too can share the joy of the challenge with Bob.

We thank Boré for another wonderful cartoon.

Minutes

Attendance: Nooka was tickled pink to recorded 26 members and 1 guest in attendance.  Our guest was Adam Smith.
Meal: Crumbed fish with a slice of lemon and some tartare sauce, salad and some excellent chips.  Very nice.
Sarg Dillo, currently enjoying a purple patch, introduced President Rob to get the show on the road.  Rob reported;
  • We had a board meeting last night.
  • The club’s finances are very healthy.
  • We will donate $1,000 to Anglicare, $1,000 to Interplast, $1,000 to Australian Rotary Health, $2,000 to the local SES, and Boré is investigating an international project to support with a value of up to $3,000.
  • The four Rotary clubs plan to wind up the Rotary House Committee.  There is still about $250,000 in the bank account and a meeting will be held soon to discuss how to allocate these funds.
  • Our club will be supporting the ‘Defy the Drift’ program.  See below.
  • We have received a request to host a year 10 male student for the week Monday 24th June to Friday 28th June.  Please talk to Rob if you are able to help.
In other reports;
  • Robbo caught up with James on his boat.  James is looking to get a commercial licence and conduct boat tours and Robbo highly recommends the experience.
  • Robbo also caught up with Paul O’Brien and we are hoping to see him back at a meeting soon.
  • Greg reminded members he is looking for volunteers to assist Lexi Forbes in her exchange application on the 15th and 16th of June in Beaufort and on the 29th or 30th of June in Ballarat.  Lew has kindly volunteered to assist in Ballarat.
  • Gerald spoke about the Defying the Drift program.  It targets year 10 and 11 students considering a career in farming and is based in Longrenong.  We will sponsor as many as 4 students.  The cost is $350 per student, of which they contribute $100 and we will contribute the remaining $250.
  • Paul announced that the accounts have passed the audit and our AGM will be held next Wednesday.  David will be chairing the AGM and has his sights on the record.
  • Bob gave us some more positive feedback from a community group that benefited from the Golden Community Raffle.
  • Bob is organising a trivia night.  The tennis club would be an excellent venue aside from all the asbestos.  Stay tuned.
  • Bob asked members to confirm their attendance at the change-over dinner on Friday June 29th by next week.
  • Gracey invited members to join the push up challenge, which is a suicide prevention awareness and fundraising event.  We will conduct a push up session each week at the meeting during the event.  The challenge is to perform 3249 push ups between the 5th and 28th of June.  People who struggle with push ups can do a plank instead.
  • Nooka declared that T-Bone was like ‘tits on a bull’ on the Nooka’s Fishing Tours trip.  Trev noted that Nooka advised that he didn’t need to bring anything, so he didn’t bring knowledge or experience.  He did learn that you shouldn’t drop your anchor in five feet of mud and that when Nooka declared that he had crabs it could mean several things.  Trev thanked Nooka for an excellent trip.
  • Nooka stated that he had ‘no idea’ what was happening to the footy tipping before Bob stepped in and informed us that The Voice was in front on 75, followed by Rotten on 74 and The Compass on 71.
Bob conducted an excellent fines session based on asking members questions that they largely knew the answers to.  Rob closed the show and we were done for another week.

Nobody enjoyed the fines session more than Pip.

Ten for Melbourne.

In last week’s fines the claim was made that no Melbourne player had ever kicked ten goals in a match.  Jeff Farmer once famously kicked nine in a quarter and a half after the coach brought him on half way through the third quarter following an injury to another player.  However, your correspondent thinks that there is at least one Melbourne player who has kicked more than ten goals in a match.  He played during our lifetime and you could argue that, game for game, he is one of the greatest players to have ever played the game.  Can you remember this Melbourne player?  Here are some clues;

·       In his first season he played his first game in round 1, played poorly, and was dropped.

·       Good form in the reserves earned him a senior recall in round 10.  He kicked one goal and was dropped again.

·       He was recalled for round 14, kicked three goals, and retained his spot in the Melbourne side.

·       In his 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th games of AFL footy he kicked 8, 6, 6, 8, and 7 goals in succession.

·       He lined up for his 9th game of AFL footy against North Melbourne.  Playing on Mick Martin, he had 20 shots on goal, kicking 11.8 with one out of bounds on the full. This included a famous scissor kick out of mid-air from twenty meters out for a goal.

·       He holds the record for being the faster player to kick his first fifty goals.

·       He finished his first season with 71 goals from fourteen games, easily the record for a debut season despite only kicking one goal before round 14.

·       He is the only man to have ever kicked at least fifty goals in both the reserves and the AFL/VFL seniors in the same year, a feat he accomplished in his first year.

·       He kicked his hundredth goal in his twenty first game, equaling John Coleman’s record.

·       He easily holds the record for the greatest number of goals kicked in his first fifty games, easily beating John Coleman’s record.

·       He retired after just 54 games with 208 career goals after suffering a recurrent back injury.

·       He is possibly most famous for kissing his brother after he kicked a goal on him during an AFL game.

Do you remember this mostly forgotten Melbourne player?

Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, in our ‘German Fast Facts’ section, we included an image of a German 'zhen Deutsch mark' note.  If you printed out your copy of the Central Spoke you were technically committing the crime of counterfeiting in Germany.  Just to be on the safe side, I wouldn’t print out this week’s edition either.  Bono is in Germany at the moment, so I wanted to help him out just in case he was starting to get short on cash.
