It was great to see so many members and partners at the change-over dinner on Friday. It was also terrific to have Yann and Christian attend as well as our Deputy Mayor Richard Ziegler. Thank you to Gerard and Macca for organising the event, and thank you to all those who played a role in the evening; Blainey, Bill, Hutto, Dillo and Lew.
I take the opportunity again to thank Gerard on a wonderful year as President. There is no need to ‘Make Rotary Great Again’; it already is. Thanks also to Macca, Sam and Tim, who leave the board after many years of service.
Congratulations to all the Paul Harris recipients; both the generous donors to the Rotary Foundation and to Malcolm for his years of service with the auction. Congratulations also to Garry on a very well-deserved Feral Award. How Garry has avoided winning this award previously is beyond me.
I welcome the new board; Garry, Brendan, Greg, Matt, Peter, Bob, Boré, Gerard, Robbo and James. We will be meeting this Thursday and getting stuck right in.
This Wednesday Les has kindly reserved time for members to meet in their new committees to discuss the year ahead. I have included a list of these committees below. Come along and get involved.
I am looking forward to the year ahead. Hope to see you Wednesday.
Kind regards
Tony
The roster is back.
Back by popular demand, the Roster returns in a couple of weeks. Have a scan at the roster below to see if you have a job in July. For those members who are new to the club or who do not remember the Roster, the jobs are as follows;
· Invocation – ‘For good food, good fellowship and the opportunity to serve we give thanks’ or something similar.
· Toast – Typically toast Australia and anything else appropriate.
· Chairman – Introduces our guest speaker. Say hello to the guest speaker before the start of the meeting, find out what they are talking about, and make them feel welcome.
· Cashier – Nooka normally does this if he is present. If Nooka is present try to learn from him how to do this, if Nooka is not there ask Sam or someone else to help.
· Fellowship – Greet each member at the door, welcome them and give them their name badge.
· Fines – You are responsible for the fines session that week.
The Roster progresses in alphabetical order, and you will generally get three weeks notice that you have a given job.
Minutes.
Attendance: With Nooka away, the whole club is falling apart. No attendance report this week. There were some members in attendance and one guest; out guest speaker Matt Porter.
Meal: Jason delivered his excellent lasagne with perfect chips and a salad this week. First class.
Penno hit off from the tee with a final joke about various people from a remote group of islands on the other side of the world. He then introduced Gerard as our President for the last time on a Wednesday. Gerard looked the part in his red ‘Make Rotary Great Again’ hat as he discovered for one final time that we had zero visiting Rotarians. Gerard then reminded members of our change-over dinner, which was news to The Compass who still doesn’t read the Central Spoke because his anti-virus software continues to reject all editions of our fine publication. In other reports;
· Ronnie reminded members that Hayessey is needing help recruiting businesses and trades to be involved in the trade fair.
· Garry advised members that the L2P forms are here. If you have volunteered to help see Garry to pick up a form.
· Garry asked members to consider joining one of the fundraising committees that will shortly be set up. There will be one committee for each fundraising project. More information to come.
· Brendan has purchased a new computer for the club, which he is hoping the club will compensate him for. Sam declared he had no chance, so he will be pinning his hopes on our new treasurer.
· Bob had the pleasure of reporting that the ROMP board were very grateful for our donation, one of only six from Rotary clubs.
· Lew sold a case of clean skin Squid Ink to Garry for $100.
· Brendan kept us up to date with our Charter President. He reported that Bruce is in good spirits but is getting tired. Our thoughts remain with Bruce.
· Garry noted that Glendon has pulled out further in front of KY in the footy tipping.
Matt Porter then spoke to the club about his work with the Neil Porter Legacy. Neil taught at Brauer College and set up the Vocational Training Program. The Neil Porter Legacy provides scholarships for apprentices and for students studying engineering. Matt noted that there is are skills shortages in some areas while many ‘trendy’ careers have many students but provide few jobs.
The Neil Porter Legacy provides year seven to eleven students with information about non-university career opportunities. It also connects career teachers to local businesses. In future Matt aims to develop partnerships between local schools and businesses and recognise businesses that support local students.
If you would like to make contact with Matt, he can be reached at matt@mattporter.com.au or 0490 936 517.
We thank Matt for an excellent presentation that clearly touched on an issue close to many members hearts.
Gerard then stood up for the last time on a Wednesday and bid the club as sad farewell as President. He thanked Penno for being an excellent Sarg. He also thanked our outgoing Secretary Potholes, our outgoing Treasurer Sam, and our Ex-president Tickler who is also departing from the board. We join Gerard in thanking them all. Thanks again to Gerard, who has been an outstanding President.
We don’t know how many members came to the meeting, but it seems likely that a similar number left when it was all over.
Change-Over.
James very kindly sends us these photos from the change-over dinner.
Gracey does a make-up.
Tony sends us these tiding from Victor Harbour. He thinks this might count as a make up. It certainly does make him the early club house leader for the monthly bottle of wine for Central Spoke contributions.
