Sometimes the anticipation of something is more enjoyable than the thing itself. For example, every summer we wait in eager and enjoyable anticipation for the start of the footy season, but then sometimes by round five you have had enough. I am thinking of you Hawthorn supporters.
For twelve months we waited for Sirileo Miss to return to racing. Last Saturday she made her return in the Gold Bracelet in Bendigo, a race she has previously won. The excitement was palpable. Despite a ’52-week spell’, she started the race as third price favourite and some had even tipped her for the win.
Sirileo got out of the gates okay but found herself about six wide around the bend. Never getting close enough to the rail to see where it was, Sirileo did well to stay out of the car park and on the course proper. Had she seen a drug testing steward standing by the rails? Maybee we will never know. She never got towards the front of the field and never looked likely, finishing fourth last. So, more Richmond than Hawthorn. Reasonably terrible, but not completely hopeless.
