Rotary Horse Racing Report.
It was a day of excitement for Warrnambool Central Racing fans on Sunday. Our two champion conveyances, Dirty Angel and Overflow Miss, were in the big show; running at home on Jericho Cup day. There were plenty of members in attendance and sprits were high. I hadn’t seen Peter Hayes look this thrilled in ages.
The day kicked off with Overflow Miss lining up in race 1, the Carlton and United Breweries Maiden Handicap. We could only hope the large crowd was sampling the sponsor's product in volume and placing their empties into our bins. Happily, the stables stuck with the pom pom on top of the jockey’s hat and we expected and big race from our hoofed hero.
Overflow Miss got away poorly and travelled fourth last for most of the journey. Luckily, she really kicked away down the straight and stormed home into fifth last place. A little bit disappointing for sure but not to worry, Dirty Angel was here to save the day.
Dirty Angel was running in the third race on the card, the APCO handicap. The excellent race caller had a slight speech impediment that resulted in him struggling a bit with his ‘S’ sounds. The race included the horses Super Snitch, Scandalous Scarlet, Statesville, Stately Star and State of Maine.
The race caller got off to a bad start but struggled manfully throughout the race. Dirty Angel also got off to a bad start and struggled through the race. Les noticed that our President declared that Dirty Angel came ‘eleventh’ while yours truly said the horse had come ‘fourth last’. From experience, I find it easier to count forwards from the last horse.

There may have been other races on the card that day, but I was too dejected to notice. I last saw Hayesey immediately after the third race heading towards the car park with a look of disgust on his face.
