Text Andy on 0438 616 462

Please advise all apologies by 4.30 pm on the Tuesday prior to the following day’s meeting.  After this time you will need to contact the Central Court directly on 5562 8555.

Hole in One.

This year we will be supporting the Rotary Club of Warrnambool East and their Hole in One competition.  The plan is to have a hit at the hole in one and then retire to the Lady Bay for lunch.  All members, partners and friends welcome.  Sunday 20th Jan 12.00.  A big thank you to Les for organising this.

Nursing Home Working Bee.

Sensory Garden.

On Wednesday afternoon Mick the Bobcat driver, Rowan, Mick Boswell and Boré did a fantastic job filling up the planter boxes with scoria and soil.  Thanks also to Macca for organizing the membrane and scoria.  Thank you as well to those members (including yours truly) who, due to work commitments or because they were not aware of the new start time, turned up just in time to see the job completed.  The work of Mick, Rowan, Boré and Mick was very warmly appreciated by the nursing home staff.

Professional builders call this getting your levels at beer O’clock.

Mini-safari.

On Wednesday we hosted exchange students from all over our district as part of the mini safari.  It is again a credit to Pip and all those involved.  A bit thank you also to Bruce, Blainey, Matt, Ian S. and anyone else who helped give the students a water skiing experience on Wednesday afternoon.  When we left the meeting Bruce and Blainey were heading off to launch the boats.  I haven’t heard how it all turned out, but I woke on Thursday to the following picture in The Standard;

RURAL / URBAN NIGHT  -  CROSSLEY.
Lew has kindly forwarded us this invitation;

Within the context of Rotary Community Service, our Club has accepted an invitation from the FRIENDS OF ST. BRIGIDS, to conduct this Rural/Urban Night at Crossley, to be held on Tuesday, 29th January, at the usual time of 6.15pm.

This is a fundraiser for the FoSB to enable this hardworking group to meet their financial commitments and to further continue to improve their facilities.  As such, we are asking all our own members to attend, and invite friends and relations: this invitation is also extended to other like-minded, interested groups, such as Rotary, Rotaract and Probus.

Our guest speaker will be JOHN BEKS, on the subject of "CLOG WOGS" : it covers the arrival and subsequent struggles and successes of Dutch immigrants in the early 1950's in this district.

Please note:  For catering purposes, guests are asked to declare their INTENTION TO ATTEND :  if at all possible, please notify David Brown by the preceding Tuesday, 22nd January  :  david@swcredit.com.au
            Meal Cost:  $22, with drinks at bar prices.

Ten years ago this week.

Following a suggestion from a member, this week we begin a feature where we take a brief look back at what was happening in the Central Spoke ten years ago.  Hopefully this is of interest to newer and longer standing members alike.

Ten years ago;

1. We began meeting at the Central Court Motel after years of meeting at the Warrnambool Club.  The Central Spoke was reminding members to turn up to the correct venue.

2. We had a film night to support End Polio and Rob Coffey was trying to organise a social get together in the Warrnambool Hotel to coincide with the movie.  Some things don’t change.  Having said that, hopefully in another ten years we will have a great story to tell about End Polio!

3. We published this rare photo of a Danish Viking, seen here possibly preparing to launch his long boat down at the boat ramp.

Titus O’Riely – The worst ideas of 2018.
Bob continues with Titus’ review of the worst ideas from the AFL in 2018;

Appointing one AFL match review officer
Inconsistency in the AFL judiciary is not just expected; it’s a proud tradition that goes back over a century.

In the past, it could always be blamed on different people interpreting decisions as part of a committee, but when you just have one person deciding, the inconsistency seemed somewhat strange.

Michael Christian spent the year contradicting himself so often that he now has a bright future in politics ahead.

What he did provide is a single person to blame for everything, which did save time.
Thank you to all those who contributed this week.
