Rotarians

We have another Rotary Central happy hour and Covid catchup scheduled for this Wednesday 2nd September at 6pm.  It was fun the last time so let’s do it again and it would be great to have as many zooming in to have a beverage and talk about what you have been doing during the stage 3 restrictions. I’ll send out a reminder on Wednesday prior to the zoom meeting. The plan now is to have a happy hour catchup every fortnight and a lunchtime zoom gathering time each alternate fortnight  (scheduled by Ann Ellis) so please keep your diary free. I would love to see as many of you zoom in for a happy hour or for lunch.

Last week I attended a Group 5 quarterly zoom meeting with the Presidents from the Warrnambool, Warrnambool Daybreak, Portland and Portland Bay Rotary Clubs and our Area Governor Peter Simons. The agenda items included club reporting, R100 projects, club health checks, District Governor visits, Rotary Outreach Myeloma Program (ROMP - this is a potential R100 project), succession planning, PETS  (scheduled for November) , a group 5 social function, and  club strategic planning . I spoke with regard to our project of collecting books and soft toys for schools in the Philippines. This was well received and will hopefully be supported by the district clubs.

I have also received a report from our exchange student Mary who is now back at school and has been a busy girl since her last correspondence.

See you Wednesday night

That’s all from me

Cheers

Ronnie

Legacy

This year has been hard on so many people.  Spare a thought for Legacy, which cannot fundraise for their important work in the normal way.  Di Officer has sent us this request.  If you are able to assist Legacy, I am sure it would be greatly appreciated.

Your club has always been super supportive of Legacy and hoped some of your members might have a couple of spare dollars to donate? Badges and bears are available for purchase and I could deliver them Covid style or Legacy’s Bank details are on the attached card if they would prefer to do online banking?

Everyone is finding it hard to fundraise this year so hope you don’t mind me asking?

Thank you, all members of Warrnambool Central Rotary Club.

Cheers

Zoom happy hour.

Last week we had a great Zoom catch up with members.  Please grab a drink from your fridge, get your computer or mobile phone, and join us on Zoom for a chat.  Wednesday 6.00pm.  The details should have been emailed to you by our President last Friday.  Contact Gerard if you haven’t got these details.

Greetings from Mary.

The furthest your correspondent has travelled since March has been Allansford, and that was only because someone had been bashed unconscious on the Hopkins River Bridge and the police had closed the bridge as a crime scene.  Sad but true.  Fortunately, some people are still able to travel and enjoy adventures.  Ronnie Barker has kindly forwarded us this report from Mary.

G’day mates!

As always, I hope you all are well. I’ve been really busy lately, so here is the end of my holiday report. As you all already know, I spent a week in Germany first at Joey’s place and then at Paula’s place.

In Würzburg we did lots of great things. We walked up the hill to the castle, where we had a fantastic view and drank a bottle of wine on the old ‘Marienbridge’. Apparently that’s a very typical thing to do there. (And yes, underage public drinking is legal in Europe) We also went to the Residence and cathedral, swam in Joey’s pool, had a party with some of his friends and watched the sunrise from the castle on the hill. It was great! Then I spent a few days at Paula’s, where we rode our bikes a lot, went shopping and went on a little daytrip to France. After that I went back home, where I had to unpack and repack my stuff.

I flew to the Netherlands the next day with my mum and we stayed in Amsterdam for another week. We went to a illusion/instagram museum, went to the beach for a day and spent a day on a little boat, cruising through the grachten. It was fabulous! Now I’ve been back at school for 3 weeks already, which is why I’m really busy again. I have a lot of catching up to do after skipping a year of schooling, but I’m sure I’ll manage to do it somehow. I’ll keep you updated.

Cheers, Mary

I think our Charter President has been to the same place.

Tongue Twister.

Next year Essendon will play St Kilda.  Say the names of the coaches five times as fast as you can.

The joy of humanity.

Few people are as encouraged by what they see in human nature as Pip Ritchie.  This week Pip brings us this uplifting observation from Clint.
Ten years ago this week.

Ten years ago this week, Tim reported Pioneer had volunteered to seal the driveway at our project in Merrivale Drive.  Oscar ‘The Stig’ was settling in to life in Australia.  Everyone was talking about Bob Katter, who was still deciding whether Tony Abbott or Julia Gillard should be our next Prime Minister in a hung parliament.  On a personal note, the Central Spoke had just appointed a new assistant editor.
