Our AGM meeting again with our bulletin editor Tony Davies saying that he hoped soon to start sending the Central Spoke on a Sunday night giving members more notice of events ahead of meetings. He renewed his call for contributions of any sort, including photographs. He also called for a volunteer to manage the birthday and roster list in the bulletin. Please think whether this could be your chance to contribute?
We were reminded of our club lunch at the Boggy Creek hotel on Sunday 24th February next.
The auction committee sensibly and sensitively decided that they would abandon the meeting scheduled for Valentine’s Day, so that it is now adjourned to 7:30 pm on 21 February 2019 at Ronnie Barker’s place 244 Liebig Street.
Bill Quinlan noted the devastation in the Townsville and Queensland floods, and wondered whether we would consider another house project? He noted we have the skilled members necessary to handle a project like that, and feels we would be likely to attract the support of local trades/donation of land etc. And while we consider that, Bill urged the board to consider an immediate donation of some description.
Rob Coffey added that we might ask Far North Queensland schools what do they need? We’ve done it before, sending books and computers.
The Peace Concert on the Thursday before the long weekend in March clashes with a Wine and Food Society meeting where nine of our members are also wine and food members. Rob urged us to get behind the peace concert. James Mepham suggested we get onto the Peace Concert Facebook page and spread the word beyond simply Rotary.
Nooka Taylor reported 35 members and three guests in attendance, including Tom Richardson, Janick and Lea.
Paul O’Brien ran the Annual General Meeting with his usual aplomb. The whole show took one minute and 17 seconds with the office bearers being President Tim good all, vice president Mark McFadden. Secretary Mark McFadden, treasurer Sam Baulch and auditor Sinclair Wilson. Congratulations on a brilliantly run AGM Paul, and congratulations and thanks to Tim, Mark and Sam.
Bob McMillan arranged the drawing of our Community Raffle which raised some $28,000 worth of ticket sales into the community. The winner of $3500 worth of travel vouchers was Bev Hall, second place with $1500 worth of travel vouchers was J McElgunn, and third place with a night in Melbourne with Simone Woodgate. Thanks to member and Hello World proprietor Nic Bolden for contributing and arranging the prizes.
Rob coffee introduced Tom Richardson who has been at the last five of our eight peace Concerts. Running the “All Abilities Choir“ with 100 Choristers on the Stage Last Year. They have developed such renown that Geelong Came on board so that 50 from Geelong made up a total of 150 performing at the recent Queenscliff Music Festival. Mainstage. Fantastic!!.. And the Choir’s fame has resulted in a Spin-Off organisation along the same lines in Hobart. Other communities are looking at it as well. What a brilliant idea. Well done Tom. He thanked us for funding the Choir’s T-shirts which the choir members cherish so much. The choir is performing at the Port Fairy Folk Festival on the Friday night on stage one. A real feather in their collective cap.
James met him and gave us a presentation on his recent trip to India, along with Tony Davies, and a Rotary team in relation to polio. Polio is so close to being totally eradicated in the world, and yet a country like India can show how easily it could escape. The thread could unravel very, very quickly. The video clip put together by James was being shown at the multi district Rotary Conference in Melbourne this weekend. Well done James.
