The 40hour Working Bee raked up some hours at the Francis Foundation housing. Just about every Bunnings battery operated gardening tool was needed to cut back the vegetation to pre-1980. As one spot became tidy a tenant would come and sit there. Opening up the garden spaces opened up a lot of banter and it was good to see the combined pruning and gardening experience of everyone make light of a lot of work!

The club AGM will be 22 March... better late than never! PE Rob Harris still needs two more directors - a President Elect and Vocation Director. Please consider taking on a position. It's a really good experience to work so closely with other members.

See you at lunch, and bring coins, Tony D has some fines to collect!

Members tidy up at the Francis Foundation.

Last Thursday members pitched in at the Francis Foundation to help tide up their garden a little.  This working bee was donated to the Merri School action.  The item was purchased at the auction and then our labour generously donated to the Francis Foundation.  So, both the Merri School and the Francis Foundation benefit.  Thanks to Malcolm for organising the project and thanks to all those who helped out.

Boré’s View.

Ian McPhail has made an immediate impact on the club.  He has also made an immediate impact on Boré, who draws Surf for a second time this week.

Surf is an elite athlete, with a lifetime of sporting achievement behind him.  Surf treats his body like a temple, and is careful how he fuels it.  This makes the Rotary club with its health-focused lunchtime meals and sports supplements drinks a perfect fit for Surf as he tapers his training towards the next competition.

We once again thank Boré for a fantastic cartoon.

Minutes.

Attendance: Sam stepped in this week and declared ‘I know why Nooka goes berserk each week.’  Sam should know; Nooka is his cousin so we assume Sam grew up with it.  Our former treasurer announced ‘about eighteen and one guest’ in attendance and ‘about fourteen have paid’.

Meal: It was a return to form for the bowls club this week with a hearty parmigiana and salad.

Sgt Bob introduced our stand-in president Robbo.  In reports;

·       Robbo reminded members who are not attending meetings that they either need to pay their annual membership subscription or the club will need to remove them as Rotary members.  The club incurs a significant cost for each registered Rotarian in terms of fees forwarded to R.I.

·       Bob and Robbo thanked all those members who attended and helped out on the barbecue on Friday.  Thanks also to Trev and his band.  A considerable sum was raised for the Hospital Auxilliary.

·       Bob reminded members to sell their raffle tickets by the 16th of March.

·       Our incoming treasurer Paul noted that ‘the books seem to balance’.  Its is an incredible claim.

·       Bruce informed the club about his ongoing health issues.  We continue to wish our Charter President a speedy return to health.

·       Bob reminded members of the upcoming Myeloma Australia 38 Mate walk.  Look for a text from Bob for details on how you can regiser.

·       Mal reminded members of the working bee on tomorrow at the Francis Foundation.

Cecilia spoke to us about her success in getting warm clothes and other items to the intended recipients in Southern Ukraine.  She noted that their group now knows how to get this done if the need should arise again.  We congratulate Cecilia on her resourcefulness and perseverance in achieving this wonderful result.

Robbo conducted an excellent fines session before Clive won the barrel draw and went home with the flagon of liquor.

The candy man can.

The RSL's answer to Willy Wonka, Brendan O'Neill, has been hard at work building an ice cream cart for the veteran's club.  Brendan is a man of many talents, and his woodworking skills would already be familiar to many members.  Brendan resourcefully repurposed a wheel from a wheelchair for the cart.  No word on what the man sitting in the wheelchair thought as Brendan removed the wheel.  The board was at the RSL last week to admire Brendan's handiwork. Well done Brendan!
Rotary Horse Racing report.
This Saturday Sirileo Miss returned to the track in the Tony Bourke Memorial handicap at Flemington.  To be honest, I hadn’t realised that the Federal Minister for the Arts and Industrial Relations had died.  Racing obsolete forms of transportation in the congested and polluted western suburbs of Melbourne seems like a more fitting tribute for a Federal Transport Minister, but it was still a nice touch.

The race was run at a very fast place and the excellent Annavisto was way too good for the rest of the field.  Sirileo, who prefers a soft track, came in seventh on a very dry track.  No doubt the late minister would still have been proud of her plucky effort in conditions that didn’t suit.  Hopefully it rains soon and Sirileo cops a softer track for her next run.

Betting advice.

A punter was at the horse races playing the ponies and all but losing his shirt.

He noticed a Priest step out onto the track and blessed the forehead of one of the horses lining up for the 4th race.

Lo and behold, that horse - a very long shot - won the race.

Next race, as the horses lined up, the Priest stepped onto the track. Sure enough, he blessed one of the horses.  The punter made a beeline for a betting window and placed a small bet on the horse.  Again, even though it was another long shot, the horse won the race.

He collected his winnings, and anxiously waited to see which horse the Priest would bless next.  He bet big on it, and it won.  As the races continued the Priest kept blessing long shots, and each one ended up winning.

The punter was elated. He made a quick dash to the ATM, withdrew all his savings, and awaited for the Priest's blessing that would tell him which horse to bet on.

True to his pattern, the Priest stepped onto the track for the last race and blessed the forehead of an old nag that was the longest shot of the day.

This time the priest blessed the eyes, ears, and hooves of the old nag. The punter knew he had a winner and bet every cent he owned on the old nag.

He watched dumbfounded as the old nag came in last. In a state of shock, he went to the track area where the Priest was. Confronting Him, he demanded, 'Father! What happened? All day long you blessed horses and they all won. Then in the last race, the horse you blessed lost by a mile. Now, thanks to you I've lost every cent of my savings!

The Priest nodded wisely and said with sympathy, 'My Son, that's the problem with you Protestants, you can't tell the difference between a simple blessing and last rites.'

Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, the club's whale boat team took a break from harpooning southern rights to contest the whale boat world championship.
