Hello all, sorry but this welcome will be super quick, I forgot to write it over the weekend and I have made a detour back home from Lorne on my way to Warrnambool for the Board Meeting to write this.
I will be an apology for this coming Wednesday, I have to go to Geelong for an MRI on my knee, I must be getting old! I must be because I was on the ground putting my socks on this morning and I thought to myself ‘what else can I do whilst I am down here’
Matt Northeast has booked us in for a BBQ and hit of golf with the Warrnambool East Hole in One crew next Wednesday 24th January, there should be further details in this bulletin.
The DG will be with you this coming Wednesday 17th January for a second visit – now that is an honour!
Well, must run, see you all at the golf but do not expect me to humiliate myself with an attempt at the hole in one, I could race somebody in a golf buggy though.
Our recent container recycling scheme has seen a contribution from many members. Having said this, nobody has done more than Hutto. John initiated the partnership with the Warrnambool Racing Club, organised the bins through Wheelie Waste, and has been hands on throughout.
Of course, racegoers are used to seeing Hutto sipping Chateau Lafite in the committee room. More recently racegoers have spotted him out on the course sifting through the bins looking for empty aluminium cans. Most racegoers assume Hutto has fallen on hard times. However, we know he is just an excellent, feral Rotarian.
As always Boré was hand to document Hutto’s good work.
We thank Boré for another wonderful cartoon.
Minutes.
Last week we had an excellent meeting. Your correspondent took meticulous notes and then transcribed them into a detailed meeting report. Which, I forgot to save on my computer before throwing away my written notes.
All I clearly remember is that Brendan thought there were 19 members having lunch. Nooka disputed this, claiming there were 21 members present with one not eating and one ordering his own meal. I am not sure if there were 21 people present or it this is just the highest number Nooka can count to when he is in the shower.
Matt auctioned six tickets to the Epidermolysis Bullosa benefit concert at the Lighthouse Theatre.
Matt has also organised for our Wednesday meeting next week (24th January) to be a barbecue down at Warrnambool East R.C.'s Hole in One.
Apologies to those members who presented other reports to the meeting.
Hole in One.
On Wednesday January 24th our Wednesday lunch meeting will be held down at the Lady Bay site of the Warrnambool East R.C. Hole in One Competition. There will be a barbecue provided. Join us and have a hit to support Rotary.
Psychics Convention.
Pip Ritchie reports.
While this is a great cartoon, I think it gives psychics too much credit. The hot and cold reading techniques used by psychics and mediums are intentional acts of fraud. It is a financial crime that mainly targets women.
One of this correspondent’s favourite stories from the Covid pandemic involves the famous American self-proclaimed psychic John Edward. At the start of Covid Edward, foreseeing that the lockdowns would not last too long, booked a series of shows across Australia,. He was wrong, and had to cancel all his shows and refund the tickets. Undeterred, he looked into the future, saw the end of the lockdowns, and rebooked all his shows across the country. It almost goes without saying that all the shows had to be cancelled and the tickets refunded again. If only John Edward had some way of seeing into the future?
History with Lew.
Lew Officer brings us this interesting fact from the pages of history.
Rotary Horse Racing Report.
Last week Overflow Miss ran in the Russ Studio Jewellers Maiden Plate. It has been a long-term ambition of Warrnambool Central Racing to win the race named after former Queensland Racing Minister Russ Hinze.
Fresh from an encouraging second place in her previous start, Overflow Miss appeared beautifully prepared by our friends at Wilde Racing. She drew a good gate and was piloted on the day by experienced jockey Joe Bowditch. Despite all of this, punters climbed on board I’m Exonerated and backed him into favourite above Overflow Miss. What would they know?
The plan was to use the good gate to sit Overflow Miss just behind the leader for the journey before making her run down the strait. As they say, no plan survives contact with the enemy.
Overflow Miss got out of the gates sluggishly and got stuck on the fence well back in the field. The only positive was that I’m Exonerated was running the worst race you could ever hope to see. We need not have worried; Joe Bowditch was up to the challenge. He got O.M. out wide as they came around the bend and slowly worked his way towards the leaders. Finally in striking distance with a few hundred meters to go, Joe put the hammer down. Timing the run perfectly, Joe, Overflow Miss and the pom pom hit the line in front and the Russ Hinze Plate was ours.
Having won a race, the stables are now suggesting a possible run in the Tasmanian Oaks.
More exciting updates as they come to hand.
Ten Years Ago.
Ten years ago, Rowan was spending a lot of time with Boré on the Bandicoot. Clearly inspired by our cartoonist's parking philosophy, Rowan took the view that if pedestrians didn’t like how he parked his Nissan Patrol, they should get off the footpath.
