We had our first membership induction for 2021 last week with Adam Kent officially inducted as a member to the Rotary Club of Central Warrnambool. Welcome to the club Adam and thankyou to Dicky Knee for sponsoring Adam and being his mentor. Dicky’s words to Adam ring true to all of us, you will get as good as you give so if you embrace the club, the club will embrace you.

The auction committee reconvened at Quincy’s last week and have a number of matters to attend to prior to the dinner auction so they will be asking your assistance to confirm auction items and get tables organised. Please save the date for Saturday April 17th for the auction dinner to be held at the newly refurbished Matilda room at the Warrnambool Racing club. I was fortunate enough to attend the official opening of the room last week and I can say it is a wonderful venue for our auction dinner.
It was great to see our Charter President Bruce at last week’s meeting. Keep up the treatment Bruce and let us know if you need assistance.
This week we will be having something a little bit different – a great debate on Australia Day. Penno and Tony are captains and have their teams assembled, and the Wino will be adjudicating. It should make for a fiery debate so I hope to see you on Wednesday

Minutes.
Attendance: Nooka counted 25 members and 2 guests. Our two guests were Billy, Elliot, Jane and Adam. By the end of the meeting we had one fewer guest and one more member. Nooka discovered his magic cube runs on electricity and was able to report that Boré officially has the club’s slowest eftpos card.
Meal: Chunks in gravy, vegies and cheesy bread. Lindsay B. should think of it as a hundred tiny roasts.
Penno kicked off proceedings by introducing our President, who announced he was ‘genuinely excited to be here today’. So, not like most other weeks then Ronnie? The Pres announced we had received a grant from the Gwen and Edna Jones Foundation. We thank the trustees of the foundation. The grant will be used to buy a new laptop, purchase some accounting software, pay for our Cube eftpos machine, and purchase a new PA system. In other reports:
· Brendan reminded members to report any community service they do.
· Hayessey announced that Dan Tehan has mentioned that there is grant money that could be made available to assist with the Trade Expo, possibly to transport students from other town to the expo. Great news!
· Bob reminded members of the Shooting and Drinking day planned for February 21st at Woolsthorpe. More details to come.
· Hutto announced that Marg has been declared free of cancer. This is such wonderful news. The whole club send their best wishes to Marg.
· Bruce announced he is feeling well as he proceeds with treatment. He thanked members for their support. We are with you Bruce.

I have been making items for Christmas presents and donating 25% to the Wolfy Foundation which is a fund raiser for brain cancer research. The Wolfy Foundation is donating money to the most promising research for a disease that has no cure with an average life span of 14 months after diagnosis. The foundation also assists families who are going through the trauma of treating a loved one.
To date, I have raised over $600 for this worthy cause. I would like to thank all members who have supported this cause through their purchases.

This week we were very pleased to welcome Adam Kent into our club. Adam, who is very well known to club members, is a veteran who works for RSL active. We welcome Adam and his family into our club and hope he enjoys his time with us.

Nearly every week we get to enjoy a new cartoon from Boré. However, very rarely do we get an insight into the creative processes of our professional cartoonist. This week we have this rare opportunity.
Boré begins the creative process by not bringing either a writing implement or a piece of paper. Experience has taught him that the Central Court provides napkins and someone else will have brought a pen. Darian’s doesn’t give stationary away for free you know. Boré then uses the napkin and afore mentioned borrowed pen to sketch a rough draft of his cartoon. The napkin gets collected at the end of the meal with all the other dirty napkins and is thrown in the bin. Boré rifles through the bin, unfolding dirty napkins until he finds his sketch. He pops the recovered napkin in his pocket and returns home to begin the process of turning his initial sketch into another masterpiece. Boré kindly sent us this snap of his initial sketch for illustrative purposes.
After examining his napkin, Boré wanted to know who in the club was wearing lipstick. Gee Boré, it would be a very long list of suspects…

Rotary Horse Racing update.
Rotary Central Racing graduate Vassa Blue returned to Gatton Racetrack this weekend. Gatton, you may recall, was the scene of Vassa’s inexplicable win in the 2020 Gatton Hotel Handicap. Back on board the big gelding was seasoned campaigner Nozi Tomizawa. There was a gear change for Vassa, with the blinkers being removed for the first time. Unfortunately, punters had not removed their own blinkers and Vassa left the barriers as the fourth shortest priced horse in the race.
Tomizawa has ridden Vassa many times before and knows how to ride our valiant steed. Nozi settled the big horse towards the back of the field early before trying to maintain this position all the way to the line. The strategy paid off, with Vassa and the Turf Ninja slicing through the back of the field like a hot katana though butter, storming home in a very respectable tenth place.
In other racing news, Wilde Racing have Sirileo Miss back in full training and hopefully the exciting prospect will get another run soon.

This week we got an insight into how Boré’s cartoon is produced. Ten years ago, we included an insight into how the Central Spoke is produced each week. Back then, our President Paul Blain was away and asked the Central Spoke to obtain a report from the President-elect, our ‘Senior Vice-President’ Ian Senior.
