President's Report.

G’day Rotarians,

A very interesting tour of the 3YB offices last week with a good attendance.  Listening to a radio is something we’ve all done, but witnessing the workings is another thing.  Thanks to Gerald and Jon for organizing the trip, and to tour guide Lachi Rooke for showing us around his workplace.  It’s certainly a different set-up compared to when we all started listening to the wireless.

Sunday afternoon a few of us attended a meeting to discuss what the local Clubs and their members can do for the Multi-District Rotary Conference in Warrnambool next year.  My notes from the meeting are:
  • Dates 16-18 April 2027
  • Districts 9510, 9780, 9800
  • Theme; Smart thinking and Innovation
  • Highlight where Rotary has driven change and innovation
  • 300 to 500 attendees, from Alice Springs to Albury to Melbourne

                         - Katherine Bennell-Pegg (Australian of the Year)
  • “AI for good” session being planned
  • Friday night:
                  - Welcome - Flagstaff Hill, Sound and Light show. Drinks and canapés.
  • Saturday:
                  - Lighthouse theatre (morning & afternoon)
                  - House of Friendship
  • Saturday evening:

                  - Breakfast at the WRC
                  - Lighthouse theatre (morning)
                  - House of Friendship
  • The website is up and running
What can we do:
  • Central: we are best placed to liaise with WRC re. Sunday morning breakfast at the Race Club
More to come!
This week’s bridge is Le Vieux Pont footbridge over La Rance, in the village of Dinan, France.  We were lucky that on the day we visited there was a festival on the river.  A jousting competition - not on horses but on row boats.  An idea for the Hopkins perhaps?

Upcoming Events

4th December - Christmas party, downstairs at Images.

Early January - Meeting with our first ever inbound exchange student, Jenny Myers.

16-18th April - Multidistrict Conference.
Shane Wins Feral Award.

This week Brendan finally presented last year's Feral Award.  The very deserving winner was Shane, who appears to have received the award mainly for orchestrating a series of practical jokes on our immediate past president during his year in office.  Good work Shane.

3YB/Coast FM Tour.

A very big thank you to Jon and Gerard for organising the 3YB/Coast FM studio tour last week.  Thank you also to the member who sent me these snaps.  Apologies for not being able to remember who that was.

Minutes.

Attendance: Nooka advised that ‘I am not sure how many we have here today’ before settling on twenty-two members and returning member Frans Bos.  It was great to see Frans again.  We had no guests and no visiting Rotarians.

Meal: Gnocchi with a sun-dried tomato sauce.  Gnocchi is one of those things that isn’t really one thing at all.  It can be made with potatoes and flour, or potatoes flour and eggs, or spinach and ricotta and flour and eggs.  Sometimes salt and butter are added, sometimes not.

Jon launched our meeting on time because apparently in professional radio it is more important to be on time that if you were, for example, a workplace safety inspector.  Jon introduced our illustrious president, Paul to get the show underway.

Paul lamented the poor participation rate in our annual Trevor Bonney shirt day.  Fair call, we need to do better.  Paul also advised;
  • It was great to see Frans back.
  • Thanks to Jon for the 3YB/Coast FM tour.
  • There is a movie night on the 16th of October.  See below.
  • The clubs will meet on Sunday to discuss the Multidistrict Conference planned for Warrnambool next year.
In reports;
  • Surf has organised us to join Beach Patrol in a clean up of Lake Pertobe on Saturday the 17th of October between 10.00 and 11.00am.
  • Robbo and Gerald gave us the good news that Jan is home and improving slowly.
  • Matt advised that Tim is receiving treatment and in good spirits.
  • Sam advised that there is now only one member who hasn’t paid his membership.  Well done (nearly) everyone.
  • Bono reported that the container recycling bins at Lake Pertobe are very small and will hold only about 50 containers each.  They are also attracting a lot of rubbish.  Matt has given this feedback to council and advised that the club can pull out of this project at any time if the reward is now worth the effort.
  • Robbo caught up with Manju Palum during the week and reports he is doing well and is as funny as ever.
  • Dillo brought us the good news that Jordan and Tarsha have just had a girl, Hariet.  Congratulations Dillo.  Matt was surprised because he didn’t think Dillo was old enough to be a grandfather.
  • Nooka informed us the footy tipping contract is up for tender.  Everyone other than Verto can apply.
Bono then had the pleasure of conducting one piece of unfinished business from his year as president.  He awarded the 2025-26 Feral Award to Shane Keogh.  Richly deserved, good work Shane.

Malcolm then conducted an excellent fines session before the barrel was drawn and Matt took home the free meal voucher.

The winner of the best shirt in the 'dress like Trev' day was...
Movie Night.

Another excellent movie to support a very good cause.

Loaves and Fishes.

Lew reports that Bishop Scott was invited to a Legacy dinner recently, but was called away on urgent business at the last minute.  Lew advises that the Bishop's dinner did not go to waste, and came in handy at lunch time the following day.

Rotary Horse Racing Report.

Last Friday, after her false start the week before, Symphony Sista was entered into Race 2 at Hamilton.  Syndicate members looked forward with excitement to see Symphony Sista launch her racing career.  This is the excitement that draws us to horse racing.

The barrier draw was conducted, Symphony Sista drew the car park, and she was scratched by the stables.
More exciting updates as they come to hand.

Football Update.

Last week, for possibly the first and last time in its history, The Warrnambool Standard mentioned your correspondent’s old high school.  Of course, this is of no interest to anyone else.  I only bring it up because in the story in The Standard also discussed one of my favourite football teams of all time; the Old Scotch Collegians women’s team.  You think the Essendon list manager has trouble recruiting players!

Ten Years Ago.

Five years ago, our President-elect manned the barbecue at the tennis club.  Nobody likes undercooked meat.
