Ronny informed us the Golden Community Raffle will be drawn next week.
Hayessey spoke about the upcoming trade careers day, and has asked members to join him
on an organising committee.
KY announced that Paul and Narelle have kindly agreed to host Mary. David is still looking
for one more host family this year. Contact him if you are able to help.
Rob has suggested we approach barbers and hairdressers to fundraise to supply free
haircuts for bushfire victims. The idea is that a haircut provides an escape and social contact
for people. I will leave it to you the reader to decide which of our members goes to a barber
and which go to a hairdresser. This and some other ideas for bushfire recovery will be
discussed at our next board meeting.
Greg reported that he dropped Jann Fiedler at Tulla 11 days previously. He noted it was a
wonderful experience to see the group of fine young people heading off for their exchange.
We wish Jann well and eagerly await his first report. (Yes Jann, that is a very big hint aimed
in your direction.)
Mary reported that she spent some time in Perth with some family friends. She then went on the Mini-safari, where she definitely didn’t get stuck in deep mud trying to cross Lake Pertobe at night. Hopefully Narelle and Paul have an industrial washing machine. Mary then flew to Queensland to visit her friend, visit the Bundaberg distillery, and snorkel on the reef. Finally, Mary went to the Australian Open Tennis. It is a tough life, but Mary copes as best as she can.
John McNeil from the Warrnambool Surf Life Saving Club was our guest speaker. John spoke to us about the 90 year history of the club. The club has 803 members including 297 nippers. John reported that it was difficult to retain members after the age of about 14, although the club’s founding President Les McGrath is still a member. The club hosts huge events that attract many wealthy visitors to Warrnambool. The club needs new club rooms and more car parking. John spoke about the possibility of detecting sharks using drones or high-tech sensors in buoys to replace Robbo’s daily shark patrol swims. We thank John for taking the time to talk to our club.
