Rotarians

Another month, another big week with zoom catchups, a backyard blitz, double donut results and the spring carnival. We had another Rotary Central happy hour and Covid catchup last Thursday   with Robbo, Quincy, Ludes, Bullant, TD and yours truly in attendance. Well I was there in spirit for part of the meeting due to audio and video technical difficulties but luckily a solution was found – drive to Quincy’s!

I keep saying this but hopefully this will be the last the zoom session. Covid restrictions still only allow the Central Court to have 10 people in their dining area.  So we’ll have to wait a bit longer to see if the restrictions are further relaxed on November 8.

On Saturday a group of green thumb rotarians and RSL Active  members  took to James Mepham’s backyard and gave it a solid makeover. New garden beds, a tonne of mulch , weed pulling, rubbish removing and new plants gave the yard a wonderful transformation.  James was not in on the project and the look on his face was priceless. So a special thankyou to Brendan and Linda O’Neil for organizing the troops and to those who contributed – Ludes and ‘Blisters’ Compass (mulch loading on the Friday) Les, TD, Robbo and Chris, and Tim and Rowan whose bungalow handiwork was also n display, well done. To Adam Kent and the RSL Active crew, thankyou as well .

That’s all from me – nearly. Good luck with your Melbourne Cup tips. We usually run a $5 sweep so if anyone wants to  enter our Rotary sweep , please email me at feegee244@hotmail.com and I’ll organize it – first  in best dressed. Stay safe

Cheers

Ronnie

Notice of Annual General Meeting.

The Rotary Club or Warrnambool Central will conduct its Annual General Meeting, including the election of office bearers, on Wednesday 25th of November 2020.  Given the uncertainty surrounding our changing pandemic restrictions, the nature, exact time, and location of the AGM will be announced closer to the event.

Fun project.

Brendan sends us this report.

Rotary Horse Update.

On Melbourne Cup Day it seems appropriate to provide a horse update.

It has been a fairly lean patch for Rotary horse racing fans lately.  The world’s best looking horse, Physicality, is no longer arousing interest on racing tracks.  The world’s laziest horse, Vassa Blue, continues to frustrate punters in Queensland although we have long since relinquished our stake in the giant gelding.  Very little has been happening on the horse racing front all year.

However, all of this is about to change.  Twenty Rotarians and friends have a stake in Sirileo Miss, a.k.a. Fine Cotton II.  After very patiently waiting for more than a year for the young horse to be ready, syndicate members are about to see her race for the first time.  Wilde Racing have started nominating the horse for races, and it is only a matter of time before she gets a run.

Put the champagne on ice, we will keep you posted.

If you are looking for a bite to eat...

Handy Tip.

Someone sent me one of those junk emails recently with an 'amazing trick'.  I normally ignore these, but it contained a hint that I had previously read in Choice Magazine.  Apologies if you have heard this one before.

Place a plastic cup of water in your freezer and allow the water to freeze.  Then place a coin on top of the ice.  If ever you open your freezer and the coin is not on top of the ice, throw out everything in your freezer and re-stock it.

If the coin is no longer on top of the ice, then you have had a power failure for long enough for the contents of your freezer to thaw out.  Even if the food has re-frozen after the power returns, apparently it is no longer safe to eat.

Alternatively, get a glass of whisky and some coins.  Give the coins to the barman and drink the whisky.  Repeat.  Order dinner at the pub ,because you don't know if anything in your freezer is safe to eat.

Ten years ago.

Ten years ago, we published a request for contributions to the Central Spoke.  It might be timely to republish this request because the message has not changed in ten years.  I have no memory of the ‘jokes that failed to make the cut’, so unfortunately they are lost to history.

‘Contributions to the bulletin are requested and much appreciated.  Remember; if you are involved in any club activities please send me a report, ideally with a photo.  Otherwise, send me a joke or a photo from your latest holiday.  If you have any suggestions to improve the bulletin please let me know.  Thank you again to those who have contributed this week.  Jokes that failed to make the cut this week include;

·       Garry Askew’s ‘The Cow’s Tail’ – No Garry that’s just wrong.

·       Ian Senior’s ‘Can you see Homer Simpson?’ – You’re a bad, bad man Ian.’

Thank you to all those who contributed this week.
