This week was the first meeting in the new Rotary year. Our Immediate Past President ended the previous year by packing all the club’s possessions into the back of his ute and driving off into the sunset. At our meeting this week we had no badges, no eftpos machine, no copper pot, no fines box, no barrel, no quince paste, and no bell. Just to top it off, the Bowls club had not bothered to set the table for us. It turns out you don’t need any of those things to hold a good Rotary meeting, just good people. We had those in spades.
Attendance: Mathematics can be a difficult discipline. Some mathematical problems have multiple solutions. For example, the square root of 4 has two solutions (2 and -2) and the cube root of 8 has three solutions (2, -1+i√3 and -1-i√3). The equation to count our meeting attendance also has many possible solutions. Sam advised that ‘he wouldn’t have a clue’ before informing the 17 members present that 12 members were present and had paid. Matt then arrived, so 18 was also a correct solution. Then Gracey walked in. Perhaps fortuitously, we had no visiting Rotarians and no guests.
Meal: Fried chicken in breadcrumbs, a salad, and bright yellow chips. Good stuff.
Our new Sarg. Dillo, introduced President Rob for the first time. Rob spoke about the great changeover dinner. In reports;
· Greg advised members that our excellent National Youth Science Forum candidate, Abby Titmus, will be attending our next meeting with her mother.
· Greg also asked for volunteers to assist with the Eisteddfod debating competition between July 24th and July 28th at Mozart Hall. Talk to Greg if you are able to assist.
· Bob gave us a footy tipping update. David and Les were robbed of a perfect 9 in round 16 by the draw. Dillo picked 9 in round 17 and is now in the lead with Robbo. T Bone, the Pres, Sam, Nooka and KY are in hot persuit.
Lew stepped in as both our guest speaker and fines master this week. Lew and Di spent a month in Europe. They spent time with their son, Rob, in London, travelled to Denmark and Bornholm Island. Lew casually mentioned that he drove the 105km circumnavigating the island ‘in an hour’. Members found this to be the most surprising feature of his talk, but Lew couldn’t understand what the fuss was about. Lew probably thinks the drive from Warrnambool to Melbourne is a dull two-hour trip. Anyhow, Lew also visited Scotland, the cricket at Lords, and ABBA show in London. Lindsay was most interested in Lew’s feedback on the bangers and mash in Old Blighty, which Lew subtly indicated may have been a notch above the Bowlo’s efforts.
Following his presentation Lew conducted and excellent cricket themed fines session. Lew would have received a coveted tub of quince paste if they weren’t all in the back of James’ ute.
The bowling club’s excitement in anticipation of the new Rotary year was palpable.

The cutlery container doubled as a very appropriately titled fines box.
