Robbo stood in as sarg with his notes in the glove box and the car in the shop getting new brake pads.  Undeterred, Robbo careered on with the meeting like a car without brakes.  Robbo introduced our President and we were off and racing. 

Hutto introduced guest speaker Matty Stewart.  Matty spoke about his relay run from Canberra to Warrnambool to raise money and awareness about Creutzfeldt-Jacob Disease (CJD).  Matty’s father died from CJD a few years ago.  Dan Teehan also took part in the run.  Dan’s auntie and mother, a past Victorian cabinet minister, died of CJD. 

CJD currently has no effective treatment and people usually pass away within a few months of diagnosis.  Matty noted that $97,000 had been raised but the run but it had also raised awareness of CJD and provided comradery amongst a group of people who had lost family members to the disease.  The group plans another run from Adelaide to Canberra next year. 

We thank Matty for sharing the story of this project and his experience with CJD with us.

The club was then very pleased to induct John Vertigan as a new member.  John has worked for many years as a radio announcer and more recently as content director for ACE radio.  He was welcomed into the club with the excellent classification of ‘radio personality’.  Welcome John.

Club members were very pleased this week to welcome John Vertigan as a new member.  We welcome John into our club, look forward to his involvement in club activities, and hope he enjoys his time in Rotary.  Welcome John!

Ron writes;

In the lead up to the Jericho Cup at last week's meeting, Nooka recommended everyone to read this book. I'll go one step further and suggest it should be compulsory reading in Australian schools.

Now, I know where Ron is coming from, but your humble editor would propose a slightly more deft approach the psychology of this problem.  Nothing, I might suggest, is more likely to make sure that young adults do not read a book than making it compulsory reading in high school.  Rather, I would ask church groups to condemn the book as obscene and totally inappropriate for young readers, and ask them to call for the book to be banned.  The book would be a best seller before the week was out.
