Tickler’s ramble.
Great roll up last Wednesday and lots of jovial Rotarians   We learned about WDEA’s big R shed and the work they do in our community in the area of assisted employment for people with disabilities.  We also had the assistant district Governor along.  John is looking for 1 person to be part of the committee organising next year’s district conference, so please let John or myself know if you are able to help.

Cheers

Tim Goodall

Jericho Cup

The Jericho cup is on this week!.  Everyone is welcome; please bring your partner, family and friends - anyone you like!  Sunday 1st of December, 11.00am-5.00pm.  We have booked a marquee again, the cost will be $10 per person in addition to the cost of entry into the course.  Please bring a plate of sandwiches or nibbles.  Drinks available at bar prices at the venue.

Christmas break-up.

Di and Tim have very kindly offered to host a Christmas break-up at their place.  Friday 13th December, 6.30 for 7.00, bring a salad or desert.  More details to follow.

Jack and Paul discuss WDEA.

Last week Jack Melican and Paul Hughes were kind enough to speak to us about WDEA and their Big R's Shed.  Greg Alison introduced Paul as 'Phil Hughes', but fortunately hardly anyone noticed.  The Big R's Shed in Albert Street provides meaningful employment to many of WDEA's clients and plays a role in recycling and re-using material that would otherwise end up in landfill.  We thank Jack and Paul for taking the time to talk to us.

Boré’s View.

Last week it came to light that Greg Alison had struck a duck while driving to Geelong.  Ducks can fly in excess of 100kph, so it makes you wonder how fast Greg was going when he finally managed to run it down.  There was some talk that Greg may have been driving a Volvo at the time, although the speed of the duck would preclude this possibility.  Also, your correspondent has recently dismantled the front of a Volvo with his bare hands, and I can testify that a Volvo wouldn’t have laid a glove on a fully-grown duck.

Actually, Greg was driving a Subaru.  An interesting aside about Subarus is that some time ago an advertising agency discovered that the brand was popular amongst the lesbian community.  Consequently, now many of the company’s ads market to that demographic in a subtle way that most straight people are oblivious to.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.  Here at the Central Spoke we embrace all people, including those who find themselves attracted to Subarus.

Our OH&S guru Pip Ritchie recommends Subarus, and believes that you can run down all manner of flora and fauna in a Subaru in relative safety.  Our President was just disappointed that Greg did not throw the hapless duck into his boot.  Smoked duck sandwiches would have gone down a treat in our marquee at the Jericho cup too.  As usual Boré was there to capture all the action.

Swiss fast facts.

Last week we discussed the failure of the Herstatt bank in West Germany and some dodgy timeing in the way it was liquidated.  In response the Bank of International Settlement in Basel established as set of guidelines for banks to assess the risk of their assets.  These guidelines became known as the 'Basel I' accord.  These guidelines were used to a greater or lesser degree in over 100 countries to regulate their banking sectors.

Aged workers.

There has been a lot of talk about older workers lately, with the Government suggesting older people may need to consider working well past the age of 65.  Rowan has been investigating the issue for the Central Spoke, and sends us this report;

Ten years ago this week.

Back in the day, there was a rumour that The Compass might have driven a Subaru.  Not that there is anything wrong with that.
