MEETING REPORT 21 AUGUST 2024
A sombre note to open, with President Matt letting us all know Tony Davies’ father had passed away 2 days earlier. We are all thinking of you Tony,…and even though I took notes for this report, I didn’t expect a Spoke to be produced this week. But you are all reading this because of our Editor’s mantra…”The mail must get through!”…Thanks, condolences, and well done Tony.
But what at a great meeting! 21 including Paul Forbes and his daughter, our outbound exchange student, Lexi.
Compass acknowledged the vegetation working bee at the Bromfield St weir on Saturday was a great success, as the photos in last weeks’ Spoke illustrated. He thanked all those attending. A great project.
Service Director Ian McPhail advised the Trivia Night will be firmed up once Trevor Bonney (and his Big Band?) gets back in mid-October. A Ten Pin Bowls and pizza night will be arranged for the 5th or 12thSeptember…stay tuned. Surf noted Bono will be our guest speaker next week, regaling us with a talk on his recent European jaunt-----look forward to it.
Surf also asked that we all give him any ideas for guest speakers. It’s not easy coming up with names, but between the lot of us there should be many thoughts for interesting people. Please contact Ian.
Bore advised the Progressive Dinner will be on 26 October, so please note it in your diaries. He gave quite an explanation, with Vertigan noting we’d receive a full translation in this weeks’ Spoke. I’m still reviewing my notes…..
Vocational Director Gerald Irvine is working on the trip to The Union for inspection of their Rotary Dairy operation followed by lunch at the Woolsthorpe Hotel. Sounds really good. No date yet,…and we’ll have to lock in numbers for lunch once a date is settled.
Gerald also mounted a sopirited defence against Bim Affleck’s assertions as reported in last week’s edition. He asked it be noted that his surgery’s carpet at that time was brand new! ….and that after 12 years at Geelong Grammar Bim’s blood had an awkward blue-ish tinge…
Then the induction of new member Paul Forbes was great fun. Terrific to have Lexi along. Quite a few of us would be qualified to introduce Paul on his induction, for he and Michelle are well known to many. He over saw the crushing of two of my cars into 1 foot x 1 foot metal blocks,…as well as quoting for the removal of a deceased rat from the firewall of one of them.
An automotive career via McNeils BP, Callaghan’s, and now an educating role at Tafe, Paul was a member of Warrnambool Rotary Club for several years. As for most of us, lunchtime meetings should better suit his life. We look forward to Paul’s company, especially as in his very first year we are sponsoring outbound Lexi. France confirmed. No city, town or village yet. I reckon I’m as excited as Lexi to find out!
A fun meeting rounded out with a lucrative group AFL/Sports fine session by Bob, and we set forth into the sunshine to digest the very tasty roast chicken meal. Cheers!...
