NEXT MEETING
Weekly Bulletin for meeting 18 July 2018
President's Piffle
As promised last week Roger Leask was a guest at our meeting and spoke to us about Royce Abbey awards. While he was here he helped PPP (Past President Pip) present Royce Abbey awards to Malcolm McPherson and James Mepham for their enthusiastic contributions to Rotary and our Club. They are both very worthy recipients. Pip was due to present the awards at our changeover dinner but the two recipients were not in attendance. We now have three Royce Abbey awardees in our club – I am sure Penno will tell you who the other one is!
Our second guest last week was Matt Pearson. If you did not meet Matt, please make yourselves known to him when you see him.
We were also treated to the penultimate episode of the long running Volvo saga…..Robbo said it was the “last word” but with Robbo we always know there is more to come….
We have joined the other Rotary Clubs in Warrnambool to attend a “Volunteers Expo” at TAFE on 25 July. Haysie and I will fill our place on the roster between 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
The goal posts have shifted with our incoming exchange students. We have committed to host inbound exchange student Lea when she arrives this coming Sunday night. In the meantime, Janick from Denmark has arrived, and he needs hosting right now. Thanks to Robbo and Chris, he will have a roof over his head at their place for a month, and then he will be at the Officers for the next month. Please think about your ability to be a host family – talk to Pip Ritchie if you are available or have any questions.
PP Pip Ritchie announces Royce Abbey award recipients Malcom and James.
Royce Abbey, Past International President.
RTN Roger Leask awards Malcom with his Royce Abbey Pin.
Something of a limited meeting report this week as I get into the swing of things and find myself dictating it five days after the event. Our Club guest was Roger Leaske from the Rotary Club of Essendon to explain the background to the prestigious Royce Abbey Award, and to then present Royce Abbey Awards to Maclolm McPherson and Jame Mephan. Congratulations to both Malcolm and James on these richly deserved awards. Malcolm for his great work in relation to the Rotary auction, and James for the amazing enthusiasm and involvement he has shown in overseas aid work in the short time he has been a member of Rotary.
By way of background Roger explained Royce Abbey was an incredibly enthusiastic and active member of the Rotary Club of Essendon who went on to be a very, very successful Governor of Rotary International some years ago. It was something of a pity that we treated Roger to what I think was the worst meal ever served up to us. A massive dose of what I think was simply mince paste with an attempt to describe it as shepherd’s pie. Whilst I won’t always be negative, even if I can never hope to match the culinary literary standards set by Tony Davies, there was no humour in this meal and I think we should broach something with management.
In a quick fines session from the floor Penno fined someone for sending into the wrong church (Seventh Day Adventists or something) last week. No organ there Penno. It should be noted however that Penno is our only other Club Royce Abbey awardee, although there was some attempt to suggest Ludeman had not only a Royce Abbey Award, but oak leaf cluster.
Finally, James Mephan advised members that there is a position available for an observer on an Interplast mission to the Pacific, all expenses paid, with applications closing on 18th August. Members are invited to consider.
Rotarians:- If you have not already done so, could you please provide the email address and mobile number of your ‘other half’ as soon as possible. Or please ask them to email it through to me at officerdj55@gmail.com

Andy’s fast facts
Last week we covered the topic of kissing in Denmark and France. Now, before continuing with random and other facts in relation to these two great countries, Fast Facts would like to make the following disclaimer:

As our current correspondent is prone to disjointed and absent memory syndrome, it would be preferred if you indicate where you believe we sourced your content and, upon verification, we will be happy to cite you and the content source place.
The preceding disclaimer has now taken up nearly all available space and the writer’s attention span for this week. So we will resort to a table:

Human reason 101
Central Spoke anthropologist Lew Officer sends us this report from the lab;
We had to have the garage door repaired. The repairman told us that one of our problems was that we did not have a 'large' enough motor on the opener.
I thought for a minute, and said that we had the largest one made at that time, a 1/2 horsepower.
He shook his head and said, 'You need a 1/4 horsepower.'
I responded that 1/2 was larger than 1/4 and he said, 'NOOO, it's not. Four is larger than two.'
We haven't used that repairman since.
Happened in Bankstown, NSW.
Bruce has kindly forwarded us this holiday snap from Rebecca and Garry Askew.
