President's report.

Hello Gents,

It was brilliant to see what effect the dogs have on young children and how relaxed they become with the presence of a dog around them.  I am pleased to report that the club will be donating $550.00 which is the cost of supporting a dog in the program for 12 months.

Trivia Night update.

Surf writes;

Hi Tony, it is great to have you back on the Central Spoke.

Due to the venue being used by others we will need to set up 2:30pm - 3:30pm on Friday 21/2/25. Please let me know if you can help with set up of table and chairs, audio and AV's. We'll pack up after the event so the venue is ready for next morning.

The quiz night will be at 6:30pm at Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club rooms, and, finish at about 9:15pm. Then we'll pack up; real finish at 9:30pm.

We are aiming for 64 people. That could about 16 members and their partners plus 2 guests per member. Each table could have 2 members, their partners and 4 guests. It can vary,  of course. There many be room for 2 more tables.

Admission fee is going to be around $10ea, but YTBC. Supply your own nibbles, and, drinks will be at WLTC's most reasonable bar prices.

Assistance with procurement of prizes would be greatly appreciated.

Trevor Bonney and some "Fools on Stools", including Tony Grace on percussion, will provide quality music during breaks between some quiz rounds.

Thank you to Lew Officer and Lindsay Bullivant for assistance in making these arrangements possible.  Real Rotary magic.

It will be lots fun. More information to come as we move forward.

Regards

Surf

Attendance: Nooka was pleased to report an impressive 27 members present with four guests.  Our four guests were Lexie Forbes, Suzie Alexander, Alison Bonjer and Truffie. Is it scraping the barrel for Nooka to be counting dogs in our official attendance figures?

Meal: Schnitzel with gravy, salad and chips.

Bono stepped up as sarg with and excellent joke before introducing President Matt.  Matt thanked Ian for organsing last week’s Bocce and barbecue.  He reminded members Lexi is heading off to France on Saturday and wished Lexi every success.  Maria will be arriving soon, so we all need to get our Working With Children cards in order.  Matt noted it was great to see Paul O’Brien looking well at bocce last week.  He also welcomed back Shane from Germany and your correspondent from slacking off at home.  Finally, Matt reminded members we have our meeting at Warrnambool East RC Hole-In-One next Wednesday, 12.30 at Pertobe Road instead of our normal meeting.

In reports;

·       Surf reported the bocce and barbecue day was a success, with 23 members in attendance and no winners in the bocce.  Robbe noted that ‘bocce was the winner’.

·       Surf also reminded members our trivia night is coming up at the tennis club on Friday the 21st of February.  We will be trying to fill eight tables of eight.

·       Hutto announced the Myeloma Lunch will be on Tuesday 28th of April at the bowls club.  Pencil it in your diary now.

·       Hutto also announced ‘some bastard’ flogged two bins worth of cans from us.  This is an ongoing problem we need to manage unfortunately.

·       Lew advised that Rowan had a report.

·       Rowan advised that he had nothing to report, and since last week had just been on a fairly typical boating trip.  No need to make a big deal out of it.  Sea water naturally contains minute quantities of aluminium, generally less than 5 parts per billion.  This aluminium comes from the natural process of aluminium masts and boat hulls slowly dissolving in the ocean.

·       Father Scott invited everyone to St Paul’s Cathedral in Melbourne on Saturday February 8th to witness Father Scott being consecrated as a Bishop.  Congratulations Father Scott.  See below for details.

·       Bono advised that he had not received any volunteers for next year’s board.  For the club to run we do need people who are willing to serve on the board.  Please give it some thought and talk to Bono if you are considering supporting the club in this way.

Surf introduced our guest speakers, Suzie Alexander and Alison Bonjer from Story Dogs.  Suzie was in a Rotary Club in Brisbane when a guest spoke about the Story Dogs project.  Suzie established Story Dogs locally and is the local group coordinator.  Her ambition is to have a dog team in each local primary school.

The project targets grade 2 students who are struggling with reading.  Suzie noted that poor early literacy can lead to an ever-widening gap of academic failure and a loss of self-esteem.  Story dogs provides support to these young students to help them bridge the gap in their reading proficiency.

Story Dogs in a national not-for-profit organization that helps 2930 children in Australia each week.  Currently there are 586 dog teams, 82% of which are fully funded.  The project receives no government funding.

Individuals and organisations can assist Story Dogs by sponsoring, donating, or volunteering.  A $550 donation will sponsor the training and assessment, insurance, and purchase of books for of one dog team.  Sponsors can have their logo placed on the dog’s vest.  One dog team can assist five children each year.

Hutto and Shane suggested we could write a children’s book based on Rowan’s Fishing adventures.  This is not a bad idea. See below.

Alison and Truffie have assisted children with significant reading challenges at St Patrick’s primary in Koroit.  She noted the extraordinary progress in children she has assisted with the program.

Lexi then spoke about her impending journey to France and the RC of Templeuve-en-Pévèle.  She thanked the club and Greg for all their assistance to make the exchange happen.  Matt then presented Lexi with the traditional Rotary fleecy polo top and club banner, then wished her well for her exchange.  We all do.

The barrel was drawn Pip walked away with the free meal voucher.

Lexi voyage en France.

Lexi departed for France this weekend and, by the time you read this, should be there.  Last week the club got into the French spirit by playing Boules.  This week Boré got into the spirit and sent us a report en Français.  Boré écrit;

Bono Maître de Jeux Des Boules

Boating Update.

Robbo was out sailing the other day.  Robbo’s boat is regarded as a modern wonder in the fishing community.  Often called the space shuttle of boats, Robbo’s craft is designed to be reusable.

Wet Floors.

When Rowan notices his floor is wet, he calls the coast guard.  Pip Ritchie reports that some people have a different approach.
Children's Literature.

This week we heard all about the wonderful Story Dogs project from Alison and Suzie.  Hutto and Shane suggested we could help by writing a grade two level children's book based on Rowan's fishing exploits.  This is a very good idea.  It could be a best-seller.  Your correspondent has taken the liberty of writing out a first draft for your consideration.

Claude and Cecilia have an adventure.

Claude and Cecilia are two friendly crayfish who live happily on the ocean floor.

One day, a scuba diver came along and grabbed Claude and Cecilia and put them in a bag.

The scuba diver was a fisherman who was diving for crayfish with a friend.  His friend was embarrassed and did not want to be identified in this book.

The scuba diver took Claude and Cecilia back to his boat and put them in an Esky.

Things did not look good for Claude and Cecilia.

Luckily, the propeller on the fishermen’s boat became tangled in weeds.

Then, a wave picked up the boat and stranded it on a reef of rocks.

Try as they might, the fishermen could not push the boat off the reef.  The fishing boat was very heavy.

The fishermen called the coast guard and asked to be rescued.

The coast guard boat arrived, but they were not allowed to tow the fishermen's boat off the rocks or ask the fishermen to swim to the coast guard boat.  The coast guard called the rescue helicopter.

The rescue helicopter arrived and lowered a rescuer down on a rope.

The fishermen asked if they could bring the crayfish up into the helicopter.  The rescuer said no.

The fishermen opened the Esky and tipped Claude and Cecilia back out into the ocean.

The tide came in and the waves lifted the fishing boat off the reef and smashed it against the cliff.

Everyone lived happily ever after.

The two fishermen were rescued by the helicopter.

The insurance company paid for a new boat.

Claude and Cecilia built a brand new house, inside an aluminium boat, on the ocean floor.

The end.

Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago, we were running crayfish raffles down at Lake Pertobe over summer.  It was very popular and lucrative.  Of course, it was lucrative because we had club members catching the crayfish for us.  Perhaps we can have a word to Rowan about getting the crayfish raffle up and running again.
