MEETING REPORT 12 JUNE (From an anonymous correspondent)
Notwithstanding the views loudly expressed throughout, it has to be said Stand-in Sgt Robinson conducted the meeting with aplomb. Relying on absent Sgt Dillo’s pro-forma guide he:-
- Called the meeting to order; and
- Looked to “start with a joke or interesting fact.
True he struggled at that point, confessing he had no suitable joke, but it did seem an interesting fact that as everyone stood to attention Bill “The Pope” Quinlan whispered “the guest speaker today will be Moses”…
That seemed a suitably interesting fact to relate, so interesting as to perhaps account for the fact that he introduced President Rob before calling for Invocation and Toast. For such a feral club, the general outcry calling for proper order etc was a surprise. But we got through all that to partake in a most enjoyable and fruitful meeting.
Nooka’s door report was about 24 from memory…no visiting Rotarians …no guests. Footy report slipped through almost unnoticed…I reckon Nooka has himself winning, but disguising the inevitable outcome by suggesting Vertigan leads with Rotten Ron in hot pursuit.
As it turned out the Moses we were anticipating was the very impressive Moses from Torquay via PNG and Mornington Peninsula, who has addressed us before. His life-story is one illustrating what an amazing world we live in, and the importance of sliding door moments. His address, had he made it today, would have promoted his request for support for fresh water security for his old village in PNG. Bore has funds made available by the Board to dispense internationally. We all know from Moses’ past visit what a worthy cause his is. If Moses didn’t make it, we thought Tony Austin might make it along promoting his PNG project, another worthy one on which he has addressed us before. Neither speaker made it, but Bore will no doubt pursue permission to apply funds shortly.
Especially as Treasurer Paul announced Hutto’s Thoroughbred Club had placed us in funds to the tune of $5,000. A great effort. Well done Hutto (NB Apologies if I’ve misrepresented anything here. Relying on memory , not notes!).
In any event we were not short of a guest speaker, as Bill Quinlan gave us a history of the Rotary House Project, and the proposal he has to put to the other 3 Clubs regarding to way in which to deal with the surplus $250,000 remaining. We thank Bill for his explanation, and for his ongoing involvement in this great Rotary Project, even as he attempts to conclude the governing body’s role.
Scott Lowery has made the last few meetings, but in his absence today a most lucrative and entertaining fines session emerged from the floor. Well done all. A great meeting.
Finally, Changeover Dinner is on Friday 28 June at 6.30pm at Lady Bay Resort. Let’s go for a strong turn up to thank outgoing President Rob, and welcome incoming President Matt! Especially, as it should be remembered by all of us, Matt is taking on the role for a second time while he is one of our working members!
