August 9th - Working bee at Bromfield Street Weir site.
Rotten Returns
A view from the cheap seats
Everybody looked resplendent in their sports jackets with a view to impress the President who always wears one. Small problem - the Prez was a no-show, as was the president elect, but the p/elect/elect stepped in and with help of Jon-the-Sarg the meeting progressed like clockwork.
Just as well the P/E wasn't there if his taste in jackets is anything like his taste in shorts. Les looked good in his Richie Benaud but I can't come up with a suitable description for Stu's ensemble. My jacket was tailor made in Penang by the FBI (Fat Big Indian) for a modest sum.
I sat with Maria and Bore'. Listening to their conversation in Dutchuegese was interesting. Luckily Bim was nearby so I was able to converse with someone in the same language about an important subject - the mighty Cats.
Pip informed us that he has instructed Jill to burn all of his possessions when he passes on. When Jill enquired why, Pip told her if she marries some other dickhead he didn't want him using his stuff. Jill said what makes you think I'd marry another dickhead?!
I was driving in Henna Street a couple of weeks ago when I saw white smoke coming out of a chimney near the Anglican Church. I was worried Bishop Scott had been headhunted, but thankfully a Yank got the nod and Scott is still a feral.
Attendance: As Nooka was driving to Rotary this week, a policeman pulled up along side him, lowered his window, and yelled ‘pull over, pull over!’. Nooka replied ‘Yes, it is 100% wool, thanks for noticing’ and sped off. Nooka appeared magnificent in pink, albeit looking a bit too casual for my liking, and presented his attendance report this week. He reported 23 members and one guest, Maria, in attendance.
Meal: Roast with assorted vegies including, dare I say it, jacket potatoes.
Sgt Jon opened the meeting in a stylish navy sports coat, told an excellent joke, then introduced our stand in president. Both President Matt and President-elect Brendan were away. Fortunately, there were about twenty Rotarians dressed appropriately to stand in as president. Paul R. got the nod and, in a casual but stylish grey-green number, reminded members our AGM is next week. Make sure you are there to cast your vote for the Brendan of your choice.
In reports;
Tony D. in a conservative charcoal grey suit jacket summarised our 2025 May Carnival can collection compared to 2024. Our figures for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday respectively for 2024 were 10,347/13,750/26,729 and for 2025 were 9,221/11,593/23,720. This reduced yield we think was largely down to a reduction in the number of drinks being sold at the event this year.
Jon reminded members to register for the Push Up Challenge. Go to www.thepushupchallenge.com.au and type ‘Rotary’ into the search function to find our group. Follow the prompts from there.
Pip, looking resplendent in an excellent mustard corduroy blazer, applauded everybody’s participation in Jacket Day.
Nooka advised that Marlo, in timelessly elegant grey, was leading the tipping with 62, Robbo (navy check), T-Bone (grey check) and Rotten (yellow) were on 61, and the Compass was still in touch with 60.
Maria was under strict instructions not to report on her excellent trip to Western Australia until Greg has returned. She followed Greg’s advice to the letter. We look forward to finding out about her trip with 40 other exchange students, sleeping in tents, diving with whale sharks, snorkeling, surviving without toilets and showers, and watching Adelaide take on Freemantle when Greg returns.
Don't worry Greg, Maria was like Sergeant Schultz when it came to her trip.
We had fines from the floor and some O’Brien time before the barrel was drawn and Paul Forbes collected the free meal voucher. As the meeting wound down, members wandered out into the crisp sunshine in timelessly elegant style.
Les looked sharp in the cream, the bone, the white, the off white, the beige jacket.
After all these years, it still fits Dillo.
Stu won the day in this excellent piece Dick van Dyke originally wore in Mary Poppins.
We really missed you Matt.
Boré’s View.
You know how it is. You have a great plan. We all wear jackets to the meeting and take the mickey out of our esteemed president, The Compass. The only tiny detail we overlooked was whether Matt was actually going to be at the meeting or not. When we all turned up in our jackets and realised Matt wasn't coming, nobody knew quite what to do. Boré has some thoughts,
Hi Tony. Whose idea was that anyhow? Next time we can do a fashion show and cat walk as well, prize bottle of wine, judged by Nooka and commentary by Jon.
Yes, Boré, good ideas. Next time we might leave the organising to you.
We thank Boré for another wonderful cartoon.
Meeting Agenda.
This week we give members a sneak peek inside the meticulous planning that goes in to delivering a smooth running Rotary meeting.
