A terrific meeting with District Governor Rosanne Kava! ... 35 in attendance, but that may not have included the DG and ADG John Clue. It seemed much fuller than 35, and Nooka's maths is notoriously suspect. He reported that he was $20 short, but conceded it could just have been "a clerical error". Anyway, whatever the number, it was Certainly a record for The Tickler.

Lew advised that he can't in fact host the next board meeting because he won't be in Warrnambool. He selflessly handed over the keys to his own home. Daybreak Club are holding a breakfast meeting for Polio Plus next Thursday at 7:30 am at the Warrnambool Lawn Tennis Club. See the Bulletin and our website generally. You need to put your names in and pay this week.
James Mepham advised that on Wednesday, 13 November, in lieu of our normal lunch meeting, we have his Indian Surgical Camp documentary at the Capitol theatre 5:30 pm for a 6 pm start. Dinner afterwards at the Warrnambool hotel at around 7 pm. Remember that our club seed funded this documentary which so impressed the Indian Ministry of Forestry that they now fund the camp to the tune of $40,000 annually. Our colleagues at the Rotary Club of Nagpur South are therefore able to apply funds to other projects, especially at the moment solar power.
Garry Askew is looking for volunteers to cook egg and bacon rolls from 730 to 9 am on Saturday second November for the RSL active project. He is also after commitment from at least five of us to participate in the mentoring and L2P Learning to drive project. I understand Bore has put his hand up. Hell! Where are the rest of you?
Treasurer Sam Baulch advised there are still some outstanding dues. Remember, he knows where you live!

DISTRICT GOVERNOR'S ADDRESS
In one word, fantastic and impressive. Okay, that's two words, but her address was quite inspiring and down to earth. She came across as a great person to lead any organisation, and we are fortunate to have her in the role of District Governor this year. She only came to Rotary later in life having been raised at Telly in Queensland, studied chemical engineering in Sydney, worked for a federal government department in Canberra, spent three years at the Australian embassy in Rome, policy work back in Canberra for two different government departments, before finding local government work in Victoria. She married a farmer, National party politician Peter Walsh from Swan Hill where she lives. After being a director of infrastructure with the local Shire, she was there and the CEO for seven years including during the level crossing smash at Kerang and the major flood in 2011.
Like many of us she joined rotary, apart from any other reasons, as a way of meeting people. Her very measured address was quite dynamic. She conveyed a number of basic great ideas for enhancing and building rotary. We are all aware of our club's general scepticism regarding some of the traditional workings of Rotary, but if ever there was someone to challenge our approach, DG Kava was that person. Without going into everything she said, she made a very valid point that we don't learn about Rotary at Rotary meetings. We have fun and do good works, but don't learn about Rotary. She recommended the Rotary Leadership Institute as a great way to learn about Rotary over three days. She made the point that it should not just be for members about to adopt significant leadership roles within the Club; rather, anyone can do it over a three day period.
In terms of ideas she referred us to the " E-Book" provided to us recently in one of the District Governors monthly newsletters. Awkwardly, she can tell who has opened the newsletter and who hasn't!.… A nervous titter ran around the room. She is naturally a bit despondent to know that only 44% open the monthly email. Frankly, we should support such a terrific DG, so let's get our monthly opening up to 100%. And check out the e-book.
Finally, her promotion of the District Conference from 20 to 22 March 2020 at Swan Hill was heartfelt and compelling. With Murray Downs Golf Club just out of town on the New South Wales side of the border, maybe this is the conference where we shock by attending in numbers? It would no doubt be very supportive of Swan Hill, a country town which is probably doing it hard in the current drought. Food for thought?..Diarise ahead of further discussion.

Mentoring program.
I believe there is a need for a mentoring program aimed at kids at risk not being captured by the Standing Tall program. I approached Francis Broekman with this and he agreed with me.
Brophy Youth Services appears likely to adopt the “L to P” program from the Warrnambool City Council. We see this as an ideal opportunity to meld the mentoring with the driver training.
Brophy will identify suitable clients for the program. They will have their L plates and will have had some driver training so our instructor roles will not involve the initial driver training.
The board has given its support to this concept and it is anticipated we will launch in mid to late January, depending on completion of training of our volunteers. Brophy will conduct the mentoring training and I will coordinate the driving instructor training.
Francis and I see this as being an ongoing project of great importance. It will have small beginnings but we hope to expand it over time. We need volunteers, male and female. A few members put their hands up at our last meeting. We need 10 volunteers to commence. Please ask your partners or if you are aware of someone you believe would be suitable, please put them forward.
I should point out that we are not taking over the “L to P” program. The existing program will continue with the same volunteers. Our program is aimed at Brophy clients identified as in need of mentoring and/or contact with a potential role model.

Boré’s view.
Last week our District Governor Rosemary Kava very kindly joined out club. She spoke about the need for clubs to see ourselves the way a diverse range of younger people may view us, and to make sure that our clubs were an attractive and welcoming environment for young people from a diverse range of backgrounds. Rosemary then discussed Col Joye’s performance at the last District Conference and showed us the ‘Dad’s Army’ themed promotional video for the next District Conference. If there is one thing we understand here in Rotary, it is multicultural young Australians. And nothing excites young people from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds more than Col Joye and Dad’s Army. As usual, Boré was on hand to mark the occasion of Rosemary’s visit.
