Boré’s View - Loved and Shared 2.

Recently the club has been assisting Lost and Found set up their shed in the industrial estate.  We have been lining the steel shed with sheets of melamine.  This has been a great project organised by Matt. 

These types of projects inevitably involve members with considerable building expertise, like Rowan, Tim and Brendan, working with unskilled amateurs like your correspondent.  It is a great experience for amateurs like myself as we pick up tips and tricks from the experts.  Our building experts are diplomatically quiet about what it is like for them to work on building projects with us.

To fix the melamine sheets on to the steel frame of the shed, we had to screw the sheets on to the steel frame under the melamine.  Members had various approaches to this task.  Brendan carefully measured the position of the horizontal frame members (see below) before marking their position using chalked string line.  Matt took a different approach.  To quote our hard-working Community Service Director;

‘You know what, I reckon I can guess this.’

Loved and Shared 4; Our home is girt by purlins?

When us amateurs turned up to the Loved and Shared shed, we were advised by the building experts in our club that we needed to screw the melamine sheets to the ‘purlins’ – the horizontal sections of the steel frame of the shed.  I had never heard the term before and I was pleased to learn a new word that I could now use to make me sound like an expert.  Pretty soon, we were all telling anyone who would listen that we were using tech screws to fix melamine to the ‘purlins’, you know, like experts.

However, are the horizontal frame sections in the wall of a building really called ‘purlins’?  Your scribe looked up the Macquarie dictionary to check the spelling of purlin/perlin/perlin/pearlin. You can imagine my surprise when I read that a purlin is the horizontal structural element in a roof.  The horizontal frame elements in walls seem to be called ‘Girts’ or ‘Sheeting Rails’.  Is our home girt by purlins or girt by girts?  Surely, we need to appoint a panel of experts such as Les, Paul R., Rowan, Tim and Brendan to resolve the pertinent and pressing question of what to call the things we were screwing melamine on to.  After all, we don’t want to sound like amateurs.

Take the panels off boys, I think we have to screw them to the roof.

Psychic wanted.

This is a real billboard that went up in Manchester recently.  The man who paid for it remains anonymous but has stated that ‘a real psychic will know when and how to apply’.  Some people think they know who might be behind it.  If they are right, this story may have a follow up where we get to see if anyone called the correct number at the correct time to apply for the job.  Who says science can’t be fun.
