This week we'll welcome Matt Porter from the Neil Porter Legacy presenting at lunch. The Neil Porter Legacy was formed in 2018 after the sudden passing of Neil Porter on June 17. Throughout his teaching career Neil had a passion for helping students enter careers that matched their interests. He realised the many positive outcomes that eventuate when industry and educators work together and this partnership was a constant feature of his teaching career, much to the benefit of everyone. Peter Hayes has worked with Matt over the past few years during the legacy's development and many club members have volunteered their time to help with site visits.

While taking some annual leave in Bali, I attempted to get to know some of the Seminyak Rotary projects while in Bali, I was struck by how much COVID has impacted the clubs ability to run projects. The have however managed Blood Donation Drives, a Feeding the Elderly program and a Library book drive. They had put in had washing stations at the local public beach access point, but I found them in disrepair with no water available, the taps had been snapped off.

Thanks Garry for stepping in as Pres. while I was on leave.

Many members are away at them moment and/or recovering from various things, please reach out to each other and keep in touch.

See you on Wednesday, and don't forget to RSVP in the Stack Team App.

Minutes.

Attendance: Malcolm counted 23 members and guests in attendance.  Our guests were Bec Askew, Peter Headon, Philomena Headon and Linda O’Neil.  Brendan was able to report that our numbers matched the r.s.v.p. figure ‘for the first time ever’.  Well done everyone.

Meal: Crumbed fish with tartare sauce and a slice of lemon with salad and chips.  Outstanding.

Amrica got the show on the road by introducing Garry, who stood in for our President while he was in Bali.  In reports;

·       Garry informed members the list that was published in the Central Spoke is a record of donors to the Rotary Foundation from last year.

·       Bruce filled members in on his progress with myeloma.  His illness has ‘woken up again’ but he is back on medication.  Hopefully our Charter President will be back in remission soon.

·       Bob gave us a footy tipping update.  Robbo continues to lead with Dillo in second place and Nooka in third.  I assume this indicates the Melbourne supporters started tipping against them several weeks ago.

·       Brendan announced that the Bowls Club have a function on Wednesday 24th August and we will need to find an alternative venue for that week.  The board will make a decision shortly and we will let you know what the plan is.

Garry had the pleasure of presenting Peter Headon with a Paul Harris Fellowship.  Peter has been a generous supporter of the Warrnambool Community and projects our club has been involved with for many, many years.  It was great to have Peter and Philomena as our guests and we congratulate Peter on his efforts for our community and his Paul Harris Fellowship recognition.

Fines from the floor were followed by the barrel draw.  Pip’s number came up and he took home the attractive bottle of plonk.

Gracey aids Bomber’s win.

This week Robbo reports that Gracey may have been in Brisbane to witness the Bombers rare win against the Lions at the Banana Bender’s home.  Gracey is even claiming some credit for Essendon’s win.  This is an interesting claim because most people agree that the Bombers won because Brisbane had half their team out with Covid.  We won’t ask Gracey about his movements in the days leading up to the game.  Well done Gracey!

Rotten Returns.

Ron believes Boré’s cartoon last week could become the new Rotary emoji.

This week Ron also brings us this comment on freedom of speech.

Freedom of Speech part 2.
Freedom of speech is not the right to express a view without fear of rebuttal.  Rather, it is a market place of ideas where all ideas are free to compete in the arena of public opinion.  In human history, freedom of expression has probably been the exception rather than the rule.  These observations are from the Roman historian Tacitus (c.56-120 AD);

‘It is the rare fortune of these days that one may think what one likes and say what one thinks.’

and

‘Fear is not in the habit of speaking truth; when perfect sincerity is expected, perfect freedom must be allowed; nor has anyone who is apt to be angry when he hears the truth any cause to wonder that he does not hear it.’

Rotary Horse Racing Report.

Following the recent Thoroughbred Club luncheon in support of Myeloma Australia, we have now registered our syndicate for the share in the horse we bought at the event.  Thanks to the efforts of Mark McFadden, the 'Fight Myeloma' syndicate is officially registered and we are ready to go.  Best of luck and thank you to those members who supported Myeloma Australia by joining our syndicate.

Impending x Grisaille

The horse is facing the wrong way for racing in Victoria, but hopefully the experts at Wilde Racing can sort that out before she starts racing.

Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, some members went out in Bruce’s boat the ‘Snoop Dog’.  The boat might have been called Snoop Dog, but we thought our Charter President looked more like Ali G.  Meanwhile, Penno and Matt were photographed with apparently both claiming to have caught the same fish.
