As members know, Rob Coffey recently underwent some cardiac surgery. We understand he is recovering well. Our thoughts remain with Rob as we wish him a speedy recovery.
Minutes.
A wild, wet and windy day. An excellent day for a lunchtime meeting.
This correspondent arrived late and, from numerous references throughout the meeting, had clearly missed an opening joke regarding a lawyer and a chook. Judging by the fines are received and which I couldn’t understand, the joke must’ve been fairly amusing.
David Jellie stepped in As Sergeant at Arms and conducted the meeting with the sort of aplumb and urbanity that one has come to expect from the lawyers in this club. A touch of class David. May I say well done! Particular calmness under fire when first Hutto’s phone, and later Nooka’s, went off with the operators clubbing the appliance to death and unable to silence them for about five minutes.
In a most disturbing Footy Tipping report from Rob Coffey, and a situation unprecedented in the annals of the club, the FULL amount was paid out to Glendon Dickenson for being the first to get nine correct this year. An incredible effort given some of the results last week, particularly Carlton over Sydney in Sydney. But not a single deduction was made as the money was handed over. On the other hand , once the money was secure in his hands, Glendon advised that he also got the jackpot at work where the payout was $160 as compared to our $25. So in the great traditions of the club Rob may have inflicted some deductions which we don’t know about. Still, it wasn’t enough to prevent an aghast Nooka getting up and giving a passingly good imitation of Winston Churchill‘s “never in the field of human conflict..“...speech.
As we had no guest speaker we enjoyed some very pleasant O’Brien time, and KY launched forth with a joke about a new monk. He referenced it to Father Scott Lowery, who marched into the meeting immediately upon David finishing the joke. An unnamed member was heard to remark, “Speak of the Devil“....
The actual fines session from David kicked off with a fine on Bore for failing to nominate a Fines Master following his performance last weeks. The system Is breaking down again. Where the hell is the full page butcher’s paper flow chart produced to set it out so beautifully at the Change Over Dinner?!!...
Lindsay Monaghan was fined from the floor by President Tim for a recent answer to the question “what’s your favourite wine, Lindsay?“... To which the answer was allegedly, “usually the fifth or 6th“.
The session itself was based on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 1969 and proved a very lucrative one. Although because I was forced to sit on the “naughty table“ at the back of the room I came to realise that that table can’t hear the person speaking at the lecturn, and clearly the person at the lecturn can’t hear the back table. Three times we were fined and all put in, only to find that the answer we had given was in fact correct. We then had the unedifying but welcome sight of Bore refunding money to the whole table. Bring that table forward I say!
When asked for an attendance report at the end of the meeting, Taylor, still sulking over the payout to Glendon, bleated “100....& three non-eaters“. A more accurate count conducted by Trevor Bonney came up with 28 including four non-eaters.
Let’s set a record attendance for the new president next week! See you all then.
Robbo.
Postcards from the N.T.
Like half the members of the club recently (Bob, Robbo, Lindsay B., Macca etc), your correspondent has just returned from the Northern Territory. I hope you don't think it too self absorbed if I share these snaps;
An old 'buy a brick' fundraising effort in Todd Mall, Alice Springs. Well done Hayessey!
What happens when council won't let you cut down the tree. I love the silver gaffer tape around the trunk so you don't drive into the tree when returning home late from the pub on a Friday night.
'Dr Phil' the camel cracks a good joke. The camel is on the right.
