2nd May - Dianne McFadden.

ClubRunner Mobile
Tickler’s ramble.

A bit more happening the week just gone.  A group 5 meeting for presidents and president elects Tuesday evening via zoom.  A board meeting Wednesday evening for your board.  We were planning our change over and looking at club financial position.  You should hear more about this in this edition. Ronni has his board all sorted for the coming rotary year except for treasurer, so please anyone who may be able to help contact Gerard. Zoom platform has been very helpful for the club executive to stay in touch. Hope we all meet face to face before too much longer preferably before Ronni boots me out of the presidents chair,  See you all soon tickler

Cheers

Tim Goodall
The Brady Bunch.

This week the board was hard at work meeting via Zoom.  More that one member noted our resemblance to the Brady Bunch.  Of course, we were missing our Mr Brady – James.  He might have gone off in a huff when he found out Greg was on a date with Mrs Brady.

Boré’s view.

Last week your correspondent made a smart-alec comment about Boré drawing cartoons being evidence that he was working from home.  Clearly Boré feels he is not be the only one working from home at the moment.

It is true that I have been using the chainsaw more than the dental handpiece of late.  I once knew a dentist who took up farming.  I asked her if she found it a big change, and she replied that both were very similar – both involved managing biological systems.  There are certain common concepts shared between gardening and healthcare.  You just need to make sure you apply the roundup on the weeds and the alcohol hand sanitiser on your hands, and not the other way around.  The great thing about gardening is that instead of applying the alcohol topically on your hands, you can take it orally as required.

We thank Boré for another great cartoon.

p.s. Based on current evidence, things Hydroxychloroquine is not useful for include:
  • Gardening.
  • Dentistry.
  • Treating Covid-19.
  • Resuscitating Clive Palmer’s political career.

Rotary Horse Update.

The sun is shinning, it is a beautiful day in early May, the races are on in Warrnambool, and we can't go.  All we can do is look forward to the 2021 May Race Carnival.  Even if it is pooring raining in 2021, we are going to enjoy it like never before.

Beaudesert is a small town in Queensland that is renown for producing a large number of famous people.  Our first indigenous member of Federal Parliament, Neville Bonner, came from Beaudesert.  So did radio personality Mel Grieg and musician Rick Price.  Beaudesert also has some famous sporting links.  Caleb Daniel and Jason Day are both from the town.  Jason Day’s first set of golf clubs were scavenged out of the Beaudesert tip.

Last Sunday Vassa Blue attempted to write his own chapter in the storied sporting history of Beaudesert when he ran at the local racetrack.  Once again the Central Spoke took a keen interest to see if our decision to sell the gigantic gelding was the right one.

There was good news and bad news for the horse’s new connections.  The good news was that the huge horse stormed home ahead of all the other runners in the eleventh race on the card.  The bad news was that Vassa left the gates with the horses in race ten, and that was the last he saw of them.

I feel bad for the Vassa and his new connections.  On the other hand, it does vindicate Wilde Racing and their decision to sell the horse.  Enough of looking backwards.  Now we look forwards with hope as Sirileo Miss works towards her first start.  Nothing can possibly go wrong…

In breaking news, Sirileo Miss has pulled up with shin soreness.  In the words of the vet and trainer she is not physically or mentally coping with the rigours of training for racing.  Neither are the owners.  Six to eight weeks in the paddock then we will have another crack in Spring.  She should be cherry ripe by May 2021.

Last week we published a photo of Vassa Blue.  Only racing expert Peter Lynch picked up that it was actually a photo of Physicality, not Vassa.  To correct the record, this week we have included a real picture of the big Queensland horse, seen here not caring less about horse racing.
Ten years ago this week.
As we continue to be prevented from meeting at the moment, it might be helpful to remember what we used to talk about when we could meet.  This week we bring you the following account of our Wednesday meeting ten years ago.

'This week our meeting lacked a President, President Elect, Sergeant at Arms and guest speaker, yet we still had a good meeting!  Chairman Dillo responded beautifully when put under pressure by a smart-alec stand in Seargent, and conducted an entertaining ‘Q&A’ session.  Hutto gave us a racing update.  Pinky offered to fix Hutto’s animal rights protestor problem and informed us the duck season had been poor and the fox season good.  Tim noted the Tuna fishing had been poor because the fish have wised up the fact that the fishermen are on the surface.  Knuckles O’Brien (correctly) expressed no confidence in Carlton’s ability to defeat Collingwood on the weekend, and informed us fishing for cod on the Murray was good but (much to Darryl Kerrigan’s disappointment) carp numbers are down.'

Ten years ago, we also reported on ADG Rob Coffey’s fundraiser to buy Shelter Boxes for Haiti in the wake of the devastating hurricane there.   Rob at that stage had raised $2925 by organising a series of fundraising dinners at members’ homes.  Rob ‘Mr Creosote’* Coffey had personally attended three dinners himself.  He declared he still has room for the proverbial wafer thin mint, and announced he was prepared to attend more dinners if required.  Rob was congratulated for both his organisational and digestive efforts.
