Minutes.
Attendance: Nooka recorded 22 members and three guests in attendance. Our guests were Maria, Larry, and guest speaker Ross Dean.
Meal: An excellent roast that you correspondent did not spoil by asking Linsay for his opinion of it.
David Jelie stepped in as Sarg and introduced presumptive President-elect Bono. Brendan, in full election campaign mode in the lead up to the presidential election, welcomed our guests. David told an excellent joke about a lawyer going to heaven. Bishop Lowrey didn’t like the joke because suggesting that a lawyer has been admitted to heaven undermines the plausibility of Christian doctrine.
In reports;
- Glenn reminded board members we have a board meeting next Tuesday at Northeast Stockdale and Leggo.
- Greg and Maria went to the outbound exchange student interviews last weekend. We might have a prospective outbound exchange student visit the club soon.
- Last week Robbo accused fellow Rotarians of stealing $100 that he lost between his car and the bowlo. He brought former police detective Ross Dean to the meeting this week to investigate the matter further. Fortunately, the $100 subsequently turned up after being found and handed in by an honest lawn bowler.
- Malcolm will be selling ANZAC badges from now on. Look for Malcolm and other volunteers around Warrnambool to collect your badge.
- Bono asked members to rsvp in the Stack App to the changeover dinner on June 20th.
- Hutto has wrist bands for volunteers collecting cans at the May races. Make sure you collect yours from Hutto to get free entry.
- Hutto also announced that Lew and Di have kindly donated four days accommodation in Port Fairy to be auctioned at the Thoroughbred Club Luncheon.
Maria than gave us an update on her exchange. She is now on school holidays and has been horse riding, enjoying the beach and attended a music festival over the break.
David Jellie told another excellent lawyer joke before Bono read a letter from Bishop Lowrey. The letter, written in Portuguese, was full of long ecclesiastical words and proved unintelligible to Maria. Bono had a crack at the English version with barely any more success. The gist of the text was a lovely thank you from Scott for members support during his recent consecration.
Robbo then introduced our guest speaker Ross Dean with an introductory monologue that itself was deserving of some quince paste.
Dean is a former police detective whom, Robbo assured us, knew half the people in the room. Dean spoke about the Warrnambool East Neighbourhood House school lunch program. A team of volunteers make about 3-4,000 lunches each week to be handed out at five local primary schools. The meals are provided on a ‘no questions asked’ basis. This is both lovely and a relief that the children are not subjected to robust questioning from the former police detective about why they don’t have lunch. The lunches consist of a sandwich, a snack, some dairy and some fruit.
Bread is donated by Baker’s Delight, dairy products are donated by Saputo and Woolworths donate the fruit. Dean and his team must purchase the muffins and other snacks, and all the non-dairy sandwich fillings.
The Inner Wheel and the RC of Warrnambool Daybreak have already contributed funds, but the project is looking for more funding.
The meeting concluded with fines from the floor before the barrel was drawn and Robbo pocketed the free meal voucher. He is sure to drop it somewhere between the car park and the bowls club next week.
