Minutes.
Attendance: Nooka raffled his free lunch voucher and, as all good auctioneers do, sold it to the second highest bidder. All proceeds went to the club. Nooka made comment on Garry’s Tommy Bahama shirt before reporting 26 members in attendance. We had no guests and no visiting Rotarians, which was a pity because Garry had dressed for the occasion.
Meal: Fish and chips.
David Jellie opened the meeting with some words of wisdom. David noted that ‘99% of lawyers give the rest a bad name’ and also that ‘50% of people are below average'. Some members may recall a certain U.S. president holding a press conference to announce that he had just found out 50% of American children were reading at below the average standard and he was going to do something about it. I don't want to be a maths nerd about it, but the easiest way to lift more than 50% of children above the reading average would be to impede the learning of the lowest 5-10%. David then introduced President Bono, a full half of whose work is above average. Brendan advised;
- 32 people attended the Christmas party and it was a success. Members thanked Linda and Brendan for hosting the event.
- Linda is putting together a WhatsApp group for the partners of members. If you would like to join give your details to Linda or Brendan.
- Some toys from our recent Brighton RC project have gone to Loved and Shared and some other goods have been donated to Anglicare.
In other reports;
- Gerald informed us six primary schools have accepted our pair of $75 book vouchers for their awards ceremonies.
- Les spoke about the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Ballarat, which he will be attending as a Past President. Les informed us that the club’s charter is physically handed over to the new president at a ceremony each year. Les suggested we could consider doing the same thing. I don’t want to be a naysayer here Les, but your correspondent did a stocktake of all the club’s possessions a few years ago. We do own a used plastic child’s potty and a paper maché shark billy cart, but I don’t recall coming across our club charter.
- Robbo advised that he has just received an antique brass smoker’s stand ashtray that was owned by his grandfather. Perhaps this could become the ceremonial item that is handed over to each new president?
- Brendan discussed holding a farewell for Maria. It looks like being at Linda and Brendan’s place before January 12th. Stay tuned.
We had a fines from the floor session in which it emerged Matt is now banned from social media because he is only 13 years old. Matt will need to wait three compass years, or twelve human years, before he can get back on to Facebook. The barrel was drawn and David Jellie picked up the free meal voucher.
We will have our last Wednesday meeting for the year next week. We will return on the 7th of January for what will probably be a barbecue and game of bocce down at Lake Pertobe.
