President’s Piffle:
This week it seems to be all about exchange students. Janick joined us on Wednesday for our meeting and has moved to Chris and Robbo’s place to learn more about Volvos.
Diana and I met Lea at Tulla on Sunday night, getting back to Warrnambool about 1.30 am. As we came over the Allansford overpass we knew we were close to home – the rain started really belting down! Lea will spend a little while settling into Warrnambool at the Ritchies.
We joined the other Rotary Clubs in Warrnambool to attend a “Volunteers Expo” at TAFE on 25 July. A visitor to our display was former Warrnambool Rotary Club exchange student from Denmark, Astrid, who is here on a working holiday visa. Astrid is looking for work, and can be contacted on 0412 833 852 if anyone has a vacancy.
The program this week is Club Assembly, so get your creativity going for some healthy discussion.

Meeting Report – 25 July 2018
I don’t know whether our chef de cuisine is on the mailing list, but he bounced back brilliantly from last week’s tragedy with a very tasty roast, showing what ought to be achievable with $17 a head. Regrettably, the glee shown by all members at Lindsay Bullivant’s absence is a sad reflection on the Club.
We welcomed our 16 year old inbound exchange student Janick Palm from Løgstør in the north of Denmark. Google Map it. On the water, but inland. Janick has spent the first week with his counsellor Paul Forbes and his family and is now with Robbo and Chris for four or five weeks. He is attending Warrnambool College in Year 11. Please think of including him in any outings or activities you might be undertaking.
Bob McMillan gave an unremarkable report on the footy tipping, unremarkable in the sense that he said he himself is leading on 114, Buckley’s the rest.
Ian Senior gave advance notice of his daughter Leah’s gig coming up on 25th August next, a poster for which is included in this bulletin. Might we make a table or two?
Brownie had us revisit the 1964 VFL season for the fines session. A glorious season it was,too,..with Melbourne winning yet another Premiership…. and whilst copping criticism from non-football followers for the intense detail he applied to each player the subject of a question, one had to admit it was a most effective fines session with no one getting an answer right. Ignore them Brownie – they are just whingers!
Finally, inbound French exchange student Leah lobbed into Tullamarine on the weekend and will be attending the meeting on Wednesday. Please make her welcome and introduce yourselves.
ClubRunner:
You may have noticed the Central Spoke looks a bit different this week. That is because it has been produced with a new software platform we are looking at for the club called ClubRunner.
ClubRunner has the potential to reduce the amount of administrative work that falls on club office bearers. It would also allow us to do a number of things that we are not doing at the moment.
For example, maintain a website for our club! James has been doing a lot of work to allow us to demonstrate this system to members. Go and have a look! Google 'ClubRunner +Warrnambool Central'. There is a public area and a members only area. To login to the members area James offers the following advice;
Every one’s username is Firstname.Lastname.1970 and if they need a password reset after attempting to do it themselves, contact James.
(I know this is obvious, but type in your first name and your last name and then 1970, not ‘Firstname.Lastname.1970’.)
We would really appreciate it if you would visit the site, login, and edit your personal details on the site. We are only just starting to set it up, but we would appreciate your thoughts on the concept as well.

Volvo update:
Robbo has kindly sent us this message from his daughter in Richmond;
Dear Father,
Thank you so much for the opportunity to buy the Volvo at wreck value...( Plus GST, commission and OnRoad costs... etc)...I’m taking no chances. Instead of parking right outside I’ve taken it 100 m further up Lennox Street near the corner of Bridge Road where it is surrounded by other luxury vehicles at night. Crook lock is on. All should be good.

This is indeed good news. Robbo is lucky. I know of a bloke who locked and parked his Volvo in Richmond several months ago and it just went missing, and he still hasn't got it back. He even lost his Fity Cent and how to learn Farsi CD's, which were in the glove box. We can only hope he is reunited with his Volvo soon.

Ballarat is wonderful in winter if wind, rain and freezing temperatures is your thing.
Oh, and darkness.
Naturally, if you’re playing in a venue with sub-optimal lighting, you make it a twilight game.
The AFL’s knowledge of how light works is not the best.
Remember in the AFLW when the lighting at Princes Park was no good? The AFL announced for the men’s game they had scheduled there that they would add more lights because there were more players on the ground in the men’s version of the game.
That means the AFL thinks you should turn on more lights if another person enters the room. Like we’re all blackholes that absorb light.
Ken Hinkley said it got so dark that he couldn’t see the game in the fourth quarter.
He said it like it was a bad thing.
Personally, I thought not being able to see this game was a blessing as the Bulldogs showed us once again that they are a really terrible side.
Once again, the Bulldogs forgot to come out for the third quarter, in a habit that’s becoming alarming.

There are a few interesting things we could say about a lunar eclipse.One is that it is actually one of the proofs for the Earth being spherical.There is something of a modern revival of people who believe that the world is flat. They should watch a lunar eclipse.
During a lunar eclipse the Earth’s shadow is cast on the moon.This shadow can be seen to be always round, no matter in what direction the Earth is pointing during the lunar eclipse.The only shape that casts a round shadow from any direction is a sphere!
It is a common misconception that most ancient people thought the Earth was flat.Most ancient civilisations (that have surviving written records that tell us what shape they thought the world was) correctly deduced that it was spherical.It is amazing what you can learn from careful observation!
