Christmas is coming, its only 35 days away!

With that in mind we discussed the Corporate Membership concept at the Board Meeting and we have decided to hold of until February to launch the concept.

However, we do need to build a data base of potential members so please give some thought to a company PLUS a senior contact at that company, we will then write to the company and ask for an opportunity to sit down with that senior contact.

If we achieve ONE membership this Rotary year we have moved forwards.

The recycling project in conjunction with the Warrnambool Racing Club is gathering steam and has the potential to be a significant fund raiser for our club.

Les McGrath, John Hutson and I met with Luke Cann, Warrnambool Racing Club CEO, last Wednesday and they have offered us exclusive rights to the collection of cans and bottles at the Jericho Cup (3^rd December), Woodford Cup (31^st December) and the May Racing Carnival (May 2024).

Luke has suggested 12 wheelie bins with plastic liners placed around the racecourse and we will need volunteers on site to empty the bins as they fill, we then place the full plastic bags into a caged trailer located somewhere at the racecourse.

This really is a ‘learn as we go’ project but could earn our club up to $20,000 – certainly not to be sneezed at!

We will just need volunteers on the race days.

Minutes.

Attendance: Nooka reported that his day at the door was ‘one of the worst ever’, which is really saying something. He did report a ‘rare treasure’; Rowan wearing shorts. Nooka was able to record ’25 or 26 or 27’ members present and one guest. Our guest was John Vertigan and Doug Hazelwood.

Meal: Roast beef with gravy, a bread roll and vegies, including the ever-tricky piece of corn.

Dillo introduced President Rob to start the meeting. In reports;

Rob reminded members we are still looking for a new secretary. The new secretary will not be asked to manage attendance or meals at the weekly meetings, which will be delegated elsewhere.
Rob advised members we are looking to return to pre-covid style club social events.
Rob also advised that we will start contacting businesses about corporate memberships after Christmas. Members are asked to suggest appropriate businesses to Robbo.
Tony D spoke about some invironmental projects the four Warrnambool clubs are trying to establish; particularly a pharmaceutical blister pack recycling scheme and hopefully a revegetation project.
Tony D, Hutto and Rob spoke about the Warrnambool Racing Club container recycling fundraiser. We hope to iron out details with the Racing Club soon and we are enthusiastic about this as a fundraiser. Hutto noted that, on the five days in question, the racing club goes through about 120,000 bottle and cans.
Bob reminded members of our Christmas party on Thursday December 7^th. Details in the Stack App. Cost is $35 per head. Partners and guests most welcome.
Bob has organised prizes for the Golden Community Raffle, which will be held in the early part of next year.
Paul reports that the club bank balances remain ‘stagnant’.
Bob advised that we have offered to help Wunta and will wait for the organising committee’s response.
Hutto reminded members of the Thoroughbred Club lunch on Friday December 1^st prior to the Jericho Cup.
Adam informed members he has organised a Jericho Cup pre-race dinner for Veterans. The meal is $75 per head and guest speakers and live music is organised.

Our guest speaker was Dough Hazelwood. Doug gave a guided tour of the cemetery to members prior to the meeting before everyone successfully returned from the cemetery to hear Doug speak about his research. Doug, a Vietnam War Veteran, has be researching the names of war veterans missing from war memorials. He reports that, immediately after the First World War, the task of compiling lists of veterans was enormous and carried out by volunteers. Consequently, many veterans from that conflict are not recognised on official war memorials. Warrnambool’s war memorial is no exception. Doug researches the stories of those veterans who are not recognised on official war memorials and is looking at ways to allow these people’s service and sacrifice to be commemorated.

As always Doug was a fascinating speaker, and we thank him for taking the time to present to us.

Guide to retirement.

James sends this advice to Bono, who has now swapped 38 hours a week of employment for 168 hours a week of retirement.

Rotary Horse Racing Report.

Very little to report this week. Overflow Miss was scratched from the race at Donald on Sunday to make sure she is cherry ripe for the Jericho Cup meeting. Can't wait. Hopefully Dirty Angel is practicing her starts and will also get back to the races soon.
