Tony’s tribulations.
Greetings fellow Rotarians.
Rotary is committed to peace through international goodwill and understanding. It works towards this through programs like Student Exchange and Peace Scholarships. Rotary looks after people displaced by war with programs like Shelter Box. Through wars and natural disasters Rotary also keeps its eye on important long term projects for humanity like eradicating polio and malaria.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, former U.S. Secretary of State George Shultz was asked what he thought of the new world he was living in. He replied; it isn't a new world, it is just the same dirty old world it has always been.
Rotary is as relevant and important today is it has ever been. I hope you can find some aspects of Rotary's work that inspire and excite you.

38 Mate walk.
Bob McMillan was supported by about 120 Rotarians and friends last Sunday;. Everyone put on their Team Myeloma burgundy T-shirts and walked 3.8km to support Myeloma Australia and raise awareness of Multiple Myeloma. Apparently, this was the largest of any of the ’38 Mate’ walks organized anywhere in Australia. Congratulations to Bob for organising a fantastic event and congratulations to all those who took part.

Ken Hutt presents to all four clubs.
Last Thursday the RC of Warrnambool East hosted the other three Rotary clubs at the Warrnambool Football Club. Guest speaker was Ken Hutt, who explained his plans to summit Mount Everest and then jump off the mountain in a 2.5kg paraglider. He is doing this to raise funds for Rotary’s End Polio project, which he is clearly passionate about. On the night the RC of East Warrnambool announce they were donating $2,000 to End Polio and our District Governor announced that District 9780 was donating $50,000 to End Polio. By this important metric, Ken’s trip is already a success.
We thank Ken for talking to us and thank the RC of East Warrnambool for kindly inviting us.
Rotary Horse Racing Report.
Exciting news this week that our third horse, the one that was donated at our last auction, has finally received her formal racing name. It is with great pleasure that we can announce that our horse is named ‘Dirty Angel’. I have no idea how this got past Racing Victoria and their normally very strict naming policy.
It is a long-held Warrnambool tradition to know exactly why our war memorial is called the Dirty Angel, but to always deny this knowledge in polite company. Here at the Central Spoke we intend to uphold this tradition. If anybody asks, the horse is named after the war memorial statue, but we have no idea why the statue is called the Dirty Angel.
It is only a matter of time before Dirty Angel, partly owned by our own Vassa Reincarnated syndicate, takes the racing world by storm.
In other racing news, after a long summer some of our horses are heading back to the races. Power of Song will get a run at Kyneton or Ararat this week. If she leaves the barriers on the same day that she goes in we will be happy. The mighty Sirileo Miss will kick off her autumn campaign at Flemington on Saturday. You know things are going well when the first race of a preparation is at Flemington on a Saturday. We thank the people at Wilde Racing for their hard work and best of luck to all those involved.
Ten Years Ago.
Ten years ago, Boré’s whale boat crew finished third in the Australian titles. Rowan and many club members continued to build the community hub at the community gardens. The district conference was being held at Deakin University here in Warrnambool, so not a very exciting bus trip for Pip and other club members.
