PRESIDENT REPORT

Our President is on the Murray at Cobram and largely out of internet range.  All we received this week by way of a report was a couple of photos;
Club launches Golden Community Raffle.

Bob and Paul were all over The Warrnambool Standard and social media this week as they publicly launched our 2024 Golden Community Raffle.

Attendance: Nooka reported that he was ‘feeling poorly’ after continuing to suffer with vertigo.  He described receiving some unconventional treatment for the condition.  It sounds like he is receiving some treatment from the bloke who claims to be a doctor that Rowan met on the Spirit of Tasmania.  Anyhow, we had twenty-two members in attendance apparently.

Meal: An enourmous schnitzel, gravy, salad and chips.  The first third of the schnitzel was excellent, the middle third was a bit of a struggle, and the final third was a tough battle.

Sarg Dillo introduced President Rob, the gates opened and we were off and racing.  In reports;

·       Rob and Les discussed the proposed beach clean up at Fitzroy River on Sunday April 14th.  The plan is to get hire a bus. A good number of members volunteered to help out, depending on Boré’s plan to drive the bus.

·       Rob also informed us that Lew has kindly offered to assist Robbo with some membership initiatives.

·       Rob advised that the club is looking to improve its presence of social media.  Perhaps Nooka’s attendance report could be a TikTok video each week.

·       Robbo gave us a membership update.

·       Greg reported that Abby Titmus speaks very positively about the National Youth Science Forum and will present to us at a meeting soon.

·       Greg asked for volunteers to assist with the eisteddfod debating competition.  If you are able to help in late April talk to Greg.

·       Les asked for volunteers to help with the Hospital Auxiliary barbecue.   The date again is the 3rd of March, 3.00 to 7.00pm.

·       Paul advised members that the Golden Community Raffle tickets are now being distributed.  Talk to Paul of Bob if you haven’t received your two books.

·       Hutto advised that Overflow miss ran well in the Strutt Stakes and Symon is very happy with the horse.  She will stay in Tasmania and compete in the Tasmanian Oaks.

Robbo then interviewed not-so-new member Surf.  Ian is Bob McMillan’s first cousin.  He was born in Warrnambool and grew up in Nicholson Street with his parents and two younger siblings.  He attended primary school at East Warrnambool and then moved to North Warrnambool Tech with the Tickler and Geoff Clark.

When Surf was eighteen and a half he decided to try the ambulance service for a couple of weeks.  Forty-four years later he decided it wasn’t for him.  Surf got married at twenty-two, had three children and, much like his cousin, grew a first class moustache.  He has a stellar sporting career in surf life saving iron man competitions, finishing second to some of the country’s best athletes.

We thank Robbo for the presentation and thank Surf for sharing some of his life with us.

Boré’s View.

Last week Ian ‘Surf’ McPhail gave us an account of coming second in major iron man competitions to some of the best athletes of his era.  It seems that, when it came to major surf life saving competitions, Surf was always the ‘bridesmaid and never the bride’.

I am not sure why Boré has drawn Surf as a ‘bridesmaid’ by depicting him completely naked, but we really need to start going to the weddings that Boré gets invited to.  Anyhow, this week Boré brings you Surf the bridesmaid.  Enjoy.

We thank Boré for another wonderful cartoon.

Nutrigrain.

Members noted that, had Surf been able to snag a major championship, he might have become the face of Nutrigrain breakfast cereal.  Of course, this is not quite true.  At the time that Surf was tearing it up in surf lifesaving competitions, Kellogg’s had chosen to launch Nutrigrain with Tony Greig as its public face.  Tony’s catch phrase ‘Nutrigrain, it is just like a cricket bat with holes in it’ was on every kid’s tongue in the 1970’s.  It was only in the 1980’s that Kellogg’s realised that an Aussie iron man (Grant Kenny) was a better fit for Nutrigrain than a South African batsman with a proclivity for making runs, barracking against Australia, eating breakfast in his cricket whites, and accepting cheques from Kerry Packer.  If only Kellogg’s had chosen Surf to launch Nutrigrain instead!

Rotten returns.

Ron writes;

Robbo believes my mobile phone is steam driven. Others are less complimentary, but it does have one redeeming feature - it can't take selfies!

Here at the Central Spoke we recently captured this snap of Ron trying to take a selfie.

Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, the Rotary Rowers did a ‘Surf’, as our comment at the time noted.
