We hosted District Governor Anthony Ohlsen last week. Prior to our general meeting the Board met with Anthony to run through a few matters….well, James and I met with Anthony and other Board members turned up close to the finish! The important thing is that James was able to answer all the hard questions, just as I predicted!!
Penno was an apology so he was not able to enlighten the Club about the international literacy early intervention project – maybe this week?
The next important project is for us to support the combined Rotary clubs’ film night on 1 November to raise funds towards the eradication of Polio. The film is Bohemian Rhapsody – the story of Freddie Mercury and Queen. For every dollar raised by Rotary the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will contribute $2. We have agreed to sell 60 tickets - See Pip for details.

DG visits club.
This week our club was pleased to host District Governor Anthony Ohlsen at our meeting.The DG spoke to us about RI President Barry Rassin’s plans for Rotary and his plans for our district.He advised Pip that the District Conference will be held in Maryborough from the 22nd to the 24th of March 2019.The D.G. also mentioned to James that the next Rotary World Conference will be held in Hamburg from the 1st to the 5th of June next year.
As usual, the board and members went to some effort to present our club as an energetic, vibrant club to our new District Governor.This was all going very well until past ADG Rob Coffey advised the DG that ‘Our club is destined for death’.I blame Les for inviting undertaker Stiffy Guyette to come along and be our guest speaker.Never again Les, it has made everyone too depressed.

Every year Rotary comes up with an optimistic, motivating slogan for the year.Rob Coffey suggested ‘Rotary’s future is death’, but in his wisdom the RI President went with ‘Be the inspiration’ instead.We thank DG Anthony Ohlsen for coming to speak to us.We celebrate his visit with this fantastic cartoon that Boré sketched on the back of a sheet of paper in about two minutes flat at the end of the meeting.That is very clever Boré.
The Four Way Test.
Is it fair to all concerned? Will it be beneficial to all concerned? Part I.
These two tests are similar, but different of course. Putting a murderer in jail is fair to him but not beneficial to him. Releasing him without punishment is beneficial to him but not fair. These two tests together compel us to be both fair and beneficial to all concerned in everything we do.
If we should ever find a project that is fair and beneficial to all concerned then the decision to proceed would be easy. The problem is that almost all complex projects in life are not beneficial and fair to absolutely everyone. The polio vaccine carries a small risk of side effects. About three in every one million people given the oral polio vaccine will develop polio as a result. The polio vaccine is not fair or beneficial to those very small number of people to whom this happens. Should we give up on our Polio vaccine program because of this?
Should we abandon all Rotary projects that are not fair and beneficial to every single person affected, or should we rewrite these tests to reflect a more nuanced approach? What do you think?

Why would the German City of Münster be the featured in Fast Facts?Well, it’s the half way point for the road/ferry journey between Paris and Copenhagen, the capital cities of France and Denmark!The distance between these two cities in 1221 kilometres, so you might like to plan a break in your journey at Münster.
There a number of bakeries, which give options for the traveller and egalitatarianily- minded people from Paris and Copenhagen meeting for business or a catch up. There are also four McDonalds for child-handovers between separated parents.
One bakery that your correspondent has virtually tried is Pohlmeyers Holzofen. One of the reviews says that “in addition to the usual products, there are also many more unusual creations - and everything is delicious”.So if you’re looking for refreshment, delectables and intrigue, this could be the spot!

Bob once again brings us the latest from Titus;
However, I won't be printing it this week. Don't get me wrong; it was very good and funny, and if you want to read it I encourage you to google it. However Titus wrote this week;
"I won’t be rubbing it into Pies supporters because there’s a time and place and this is neither.
Footy fans know how bad they’ll be feeling."
Now hold on a minute Titus. For the tenth time in my life Collingwood have played in a Grand Final and not won. They lost three Grand Finals right before I was born as well. They have just played in a Grand Final, lead by five goals, and lost by less than a goal after their own runner gifted West Coast a goal. If this is not the time to rub it in to Collingwood supporters, then I would ask you when is it?
Collingwood had a great year, and they look to have a team that will be successful for years to come. However, for today, rival supporters can just enjoy this picture;

Pip and Bruce are not the only members to have starred in the night clubs. The Compass used to cut the rug in his day (and probably still does). Possibly the club should have banned more than just drinks on the dance floor, like mesh singlets for example.
