Best wishes to James Mepham who is recovering from a couple of strokes that he suffered last week. Dicky Knee is a wonderful member of Rotary and of our community and he will be out of action while he recuperates so it is our turn to assist him in any way to help with his recovery. We have a few things in mind and will keep you informed as to what will eventuate.

We have another Rotary Central happy hour and Covid catchup on Wednesday 14^th Octoberat 6pm. I’ll be sending out an invite soon so keep that in your diaries.

Last Thursday we had over thirty members and partners attend the bowls night at City Memorial Bowls Club. It was great catching up with people in face to face (or mask to mask) to have a meal and then have a roll on the hallowed artificial turf. Thanks to Bob McMillan and Knuckles O’Brien for booking the venue and getting the bowls and teams organized. I have to admit I bowled like the Collingwood football side played on Saturday night (I know, I’m being a bit harsh on myself) but it was all in good fun and I look forward to it being a regular event on our Rotary calendar.

The winner of the 2 bottles of Penfolds Bin 389 2010 vintage has yet to be announced although bidding closed at midday last Friday. Tony, it’s over to you to announce the winning bid. Thanks again to Lew for your generous donation.

Board members, our next monthly meeting will be held on Monday October 19^th at 7.30pm at a venue to be arranged by Potholes.

Lew's wine auction.

Much to Felicity's relief, Ronnie has been pipped at the post by the Tickler, who takes home the two excellent bottles of wine. We thank Tim and Gerard for their bidding and thank Lew for his extraordinary generosity.

Boré’s view.

Last Thursday about 25 members and partners enjoyed a meal at the City Memorial Bowls Club before enjoying a few ends of lawn bowls. Boré turned up with a pianist from Kyrgyzstan, who entertained us with popular Kyrgyz show tunes while we ate. The only surprising thing about that was that no one seemed even slightly surprised by it.

The meal was very good and the bowling competitive. Most people were bowling conventional leg spin. The googlies that I saw were pitched outside leg stump and then spun further away from the pitch, indicating most were bowled by accident. Robbo bucked the trend and delivered a withering spell of pace bowling, often to good effect. On more than one occasion he repositioned the jack off the cut surface. Anne Lynch claimed to have never played the game before but repeatedly placed her bowl adjacent to the jack. She has a big future in the game.

Bore adjudicated the competition by using the time-honoured heel to toe method to measure shoe lengths from each bowls to the jack. He looked like he was performing an American style sobriety test. No self-respecting U.S. police officer would have let Boré drive home.

We thank Bob for organising a great night and thank Boré for another great cartoon.

Ten years ago.

ABBA had a huge number of Australian fans in the 1970’s. But who did ABBA idolise? Ten years ago, we revealed that Agnetha and Anni-Frid were huge Paul O’Brien fans back in the day. The following is a genuine photo from that era.
