Stephanie Somer, our inbound exchange student in 2012/13. In Warrnambool for a couple of days. The third photo is with Eliza and Peter MCLachlan. Peter was Stephanie‘s counsellor.
The last few months of exchange have flown by in a blink. I said goodbye to all my northern hemisphere exchange friends who finished their year in July, since then I’ve been lucky enough to travel with both of my host families, discovering new parts of France and meeting incredible people along the way.
Some highlights from the past couple of months include: attending the district conference, a Bruce Springsteen concert in Lille, (met John Conlan from Port Fairy going to the concert on the train) visiting Versailles, and watching the Tour de France.
I also spent a day in the small town of Fromelles with Bim Affleck, which was a real highlight. It was fascinating to hear and learn about the history of the ANZACs, who are honoured just 20 minutes from where I live. I’m so grateful to Bim for giving me the opportunity, it was a truly memorable day.
I’m now seven months into my exchange and have just moved in with my third host family. My parents both work for universities in lille, my mum being the library coordinator, specialising in medieval history and my dad a biologist, focused most on birds. We’re currently staying at their holiday house in the Lozère department, in a village about two hours north of Montpellier. The weather has been incredible, 30°C and clear blue skies. Our days have been filled with hiking, swimming, and exploring nearby villages. It’s been so relaxing that I can hardly believe I’ll be back at school in just three
Thanks to my historian host mum, I’ve learnt a lot about the region we’ve been in. It has a strong medieval history, and even today countless castles and fortified villages can still be found dotted throughout the landscape. In the 16th and 17th centuries, Lozère was heavily affected by the wars of religion between Catholics and Protestants, which left a lasting mark on its towns and communities. Today, this history is reflected in the region’s unique architecture and traditions.
This exchange continues to be the adventure of a lifetime, and I can’t wait to see what the next few months brings!

The Six C’s are looking to build some sheds next to the fire station to house goods, and are seeking $11,000 in funding for this.
The 15 pallets have musical instruments, Lego and other toys, shoes, soap, clothes, stationary, books, household goods and a range of other items. There is $103,000 worth of goods on the pallets, including $18,000 worth of Lego (I assume that it is not just two mint condition Lego Modular Café Corner sets).
We may assist Six C’s with distribution at some point.
Cobden trailers will build the skeleton of our can sorting trailer and register it for us. Your correspondent will start cleaning out his shed.

Bim reminded us September 5th is Legacy Badge Day. Volunteers are needed to help sell badges.
Ron advised that Nooka was going to come to the meeting, but the weather was too good, so he went fishing. Somebody picked nine last week, but Nooka couldn’t care less.
Maria gave us an update on her life. She has made some good friends at her current host family. They recently did an escape room and travelled to Mount Gambier where she saw the native Australian big rat. Otherwise known as a possum.
Lindsay gave us an excellent fines session based on the fascinating field of taxation law. Lindsay started out by asking ‘how much money can you earn before you have to start paying tax? I know some people who only accept cash who would dispute the answer Lindsay gave, but let’s not split hairs. The barrel was drawn, and Pip bagged the rich tax-free prize on offer.

Recently this correspondent was having dinner with a friend. My friend was telling me something important, but I wasn't really listening to what he was saying because Lew sent me the following text and I was looking at it on my phone instead.
Rotten Returns; It's the D, O, double G at the M.C.G.
Recently we got the exciting news that the AFL has booked Snoop Dogg as the grand final pre-game entertainment. It comes as no surprise to most of us that there are already calls to have Snoop suspended from taking part the big game. Of course, most of us assumed it would more be a Willie Rioli type issue rather than an Isaac Rankine situation.
Ron, who has been all over the West Coast scene ever since NWA released Straight Outta Compton, will be bitterly disappointed if Snoop doesn’t get the gig. Ron sends us this report.
