This Wednesday at lunch, Youth Director Greg Allison will introduce Mille, a year 11 Student from Warrnambool College who is applying to attend the National Youth Science Forum. Rotary Australia is the Founding Partner for the NYSF and it is estimated that 200,000 volunteer hours go into this partnership from Rotarians helping to fundraise and support students to attend.

This Friday 2.30pm-4.30pm the club is volunteering at the RSL to do some tidying up in the gardens at the front near the memorials and some pressure washing under the building. This working bee is to help the RSL prepare for their Vietnam Veterans Commemoration Service on the 18th at 7.20pm at the VV Memorial. Thanks to Matt Northeast and his committee for organising this.

Also coming up on the 21st August is a tree planting day at Tooram Memorial Park. It is fantastic to have some activities coming up, and please involve your partners, kids and mates.

These activities are in the Teams Stack App, you'll see there what the timings are and what to bring. Also don't forget to RSVP for lunch meetings by Tuesday 12.30pm too.

The board are meeting on the 16th, the Club Forum notes are being consolidated and your ideas will be put forward. If you have anything to add to your committee, pass it along to your director. Also if there is anything you would like the board to know about or consider please let us know so that we can get the ball rolling by putting it on the agenda.

Lastly, Dillo has reached Social Media 'Influencer' status on FB with the recent post about his role as President of the Warrnambool and District Community Hospice. Our Club shared the news and it has been our most popular post since the page began! Dillo, you are clearly loved for your commitment, passion and for being such a good bloke. The comments are very heart warming. Well done.

Minutes.

Attendance: Garry efficiently and accurately reported nineteen members and zero guests in attendance.

Meal:  Lasagna, salad and chips.  A meal Brendan describes as ‘the best kind of mince’.  10/10.

Bob opened the meeting as our Sergeant, told a Simpson’s joke and then introduced our President.  James welcomed everybody and invited reports;

·       Greg thanked those members who assisted with the recent Eistedfodd.

·       Greg asked members to consider volunteering for the Science and Engineering Challenge next Wednesday.  Talk to Greg if you can help.

·       Greg also discussed the National Youth Science Forum.  He has an interested student and applications need to be in by the 19th of August.  The club may consider assisting with the cost of the forum.

·       Boré gave us an update on the plan to provide a new tandem bicycle for a sight impaired man and his friend.   Bob has organized $1600 funding from the City Memoral Bowls Club and we thank them for that.  There is an expectation that our club will also provide some funding, so hopefully we can make that all work.

·       Tony informed members we will be holding a working bee at the Tooram Memorial Park on Sunday the 21st of August between 10.00am and about 12.00. Please bring any appropriate tools you have available (shovels, wheelbarrows etc).

·       Matt reported that the Merri School are now nearly ready to proceed with their tree planting along the Merri River.  There are some details to be worked out, but this looks like happening in September.

·       Matt also informed us that we have agreed to assist the RSL in cleaning up their grounds prior to Vietnam Veteran’s Day on the 19th of August.  The plan is to get together on Friday 12th August and do some weeding, lay down some mulch and do some pressure cleaning.  More details to come.

·       Matt is also looking to organise a trivia night fundraiser, probably at one of the local footy clubs.  Stay tuned.

·       Bob brought us up to date with the footy tipping.  Little change out front with Robbo leading from Dillo, Nooka, Lew, Hayesey, The Builder, Chill and Rotten.

Les conducted an excellent fines/guest speaker session that covered such diverse topics and the history of the Commonwealth Games, the lama quarantine facilities he designed on the island of Nui, the football skills of members of the Warrnambool Surf Lifesaving Club, and the life and times of Mr Garry Ablett Snr.  For our younger readers, Garry Ablett Snr is the father of the best footballer of all time, Garry Ablett.  Garry's father played a few games for Hawthorn I believe.  Anyhow, we thank Les for his excellent presentation.  The barrel was drawn and Rob Harris, who only received his number last week, took home the bottle of hooch.  Rob now has a 50% win loss ratio on the barrel draw.

The Rotary Footy Tipping Contest is devilishly difficult to do well in.

Boré’s view.

Recently there has been some discussion in the club about Rotary’s policy on diversity and inclusion, and how or whether we want to communicate that.  We are a group of largely older, white men.  However, as Boré points out, we are a very diverse group of largely older white men.  Boré writes;

‘When it comes to equity, diverse and inclusiveness we have done the ultimate in the club: we included a non-english speaking man/lady, finger in the dyke, cross dressing and waiving his(her) indigenous flag, barracking the Crocodiles and drinking imported beer.’

If I am understanding Boré correctly, which is highly unlikely, then Boré is pointing out that any club which would have him as a member could never be fairly accused of being picky about who it admits as members.  Now surely that is something we can all agree on.

We thank Boré for this wonderful insight into the rich tapestry that is the life of our cartoonist.

Missing the Central Court.

Don’t get me wrong, we love the venue and the food at the Warrnambool Bowls Club.  While we enjoy the Jan van Eyck-style realism of the food at the bowls club, every so often we hunger for the Salvador Dali-like surrealist work of Jason at the Central Court.  His preferred artistic medium of course was mince.  Margherita Pizza followed by a traditional Indian beef curry.  ‘Lourd comme du plomb’ - vol-au-vents packed with mince.  Chop Suey.  Jason raided the cuisines of the world like a Viking raiding an English monastery. Some of us really miss Jason’s cooking.  Your correspondent misses it, Lindsay misses it, and Brendan misses it.  Brendan writes;

This month’s Better Homes & Garden has an article on “mixin’ it up with mince”. I will forward the recipes to the bowls club for those missing central court cuisine.

There are 7 delicious recipes we can put on rotation!!

We can look forward to spaghetti &meatball nests, bacon wrapped rissoles with chilli jam for example or we can go to Central Court and get some of the old favourites if you like!

Queensland weather update.

This week Robbo sends us a report from the traditional Warrnambool Central Queensland sub-branch, which is usually active at this time of year.  Robbo reports that the weather has now improved in the Northern state, and sends us these snaps as proof.

The weather in Queensland is so good that you need to place gigantic sandbags along the coast to stop it washing away.  Not convinced about the Queensland weather yet Robbo.

Okay, that looks pretty nice.

The real reason Gerald retired.

This week Ron recalls an appointment he had with Dr Irvine just before he decided to retire.  Ron writes;

Ten Years Ago.

Ten years ago, Pinky was still recovering in Royal Melbourne Hospital after his car accident.  The club passed around a get well soon card for Pinky and members competed with each other to write in the funniest comment.  Pip’s minutes of the meeting record that it was important to try to make Pinky laugh ‘because he has five broken ribs.’
