President's Message

We had an excellent attendance at our meeting on the 16 the of April which had been advertised as having George speak on emerging technologies. I think this is why so many turned up in anticipation of an interesting program – I mean it George! I had to change the program at last minute notice as we had Rotarians Jill and Phil Ogden arrive on their fundraising cycling trip to speak to us about Polio Plus. They became our speakers for the evening and George’s talk is deferred to a later date.

Apologies from Andrew and Ann Body and Peter Smid. Cathy Blyth was also an apology as she is in the Royal Melbourne Hospital Intensive Care. Our thoughts and prayers are with Cathy. I used not to think people thinking or praying for people to get better had any impact but after the experience of having my son so unwell last year when even my old school friends and others prayed for him and against all the odds he survived, I now believe in the power of connectedness and of pray and positive thinking. So, keep up the prayers and positive thoughts. Thank you to Kelly for organizing the card for her. I have spoken to Cathy via messenger, and she hasn’t got the card yet. She is progressing slowly.

Greg Lee, Director of Foundation gave us a presentation on Foundation at the start of the meeting. It really was interesting, and he did a great job. The link to the video and handouts have been circulated to all members. This educational information is on he RCW Google Drive under Foundation.

Judy Ross has provided a lot of photos for the Club memorabilia, and I have uploaded them to RCW Google Drive, and they are stored in the folder Photos and Media/Photos 2020 and before/Judy Ross donated photos. Thankyou Judy - lovely photo of father, daughter and example of Johns handiwork, the lectern.

Robbie did the swindle as usual – thanks Robbie.

Rachel spoke to us about the RYLA Dinner and thanked those who attended. It was a
successful night for RYLA and thank you to Rachel for organizing this.

Our speakers for the evening were Phil and Joyce Ogden who spoke to us about Polio Plus and the need for that Foundation Program to get a boost of funding to push forward the final eradication worldwide of polio, a disease many of our older members will know about. I’ve included a video for members to remind themselves about polio in Australia. Copy the address into the browser.

At our next Board meeting we will decide if we can provide any funds for this project this
year. We wish Phil and Joyce well in their continued efforts to raise funds for this worthwhile cause and hope they keep safe on their ride to Sydney and return to Tasmania.

Next week our meeting is at the RSL to remember Anzac Day. The following week it is at Wangoom Hall for the May Races – dressing up looking our best for the races! That evening is $25 a head. A prize for the best dressed.

Clean up from the book sale this Sunday at 10am at the Warrnambool Club. Many hands makes light work.

Have a great week. “Hope is like a road in the country; there was never a road, but
when many people walk on it, the road comes into existence.” ~ Lin Yutang

Milk bottle tops and bread tags:
I have been delivering your donations of milk bottle tops to the City Council offices. They are no longer accepting them, as the Lids for Kids project in Warrnambool is not operating at present. Instead, Wil, our guest speaker from the WCC, suggested you put the washed tops back on the washed milk bottles and place them in your yellow recycling bin.  We will update you if the Lids for Kids project is restarted.

The bread tags have been going to Bakers Delight in the  Coles carpark at the rear of Target. Feel free to drop them in if you are in the area, however if you still want to bring them to Rotary, I'm happy to deliver them on your behalf. Judy.

A reminder for the small change jar, make sure to drop your coins in the jar before Judy leaves at the end of the Month.

Wisecrack of the week
From John Beks
On Getting On...
  1. Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age… and start bragging about it!
  2. The older we get, the fewer things seem worth waiting in line for.
  3. Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not I, I want people to know WHY I look this way: I’ve travelled a long way and some of the roads weren’t paved.
  4. When you are dissatisfied and would like to get back to your youth: think of Algebra!
  5. You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
  6. I don’t know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
  7. One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.
  8. One must wait till evening to see how splendid the day has been.
  9. Being young is beautiful: being old is comfortable.
  10. Long ago, when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks, it was called witchcraft: today, it’s called golf!
  11. If you don’t learn to laugh at trouble, you won’t have anything to laugh at when you are old.
  12. I live in my own little world, but that’s OK: they know me here!
  13. Every day I beat my own previous record for the number of consecutive days I’ve stayed alive.
  14. You have reached that certain age, when all you exercise is caution!
  15. Old age isn’t so bad… when you consider the alternative.
  16. To admit you have been in the wrong is but saying that you are wiser today than you were yesterday.
  17. Old age is like everything else: to make a success of it – start young!
  18. Aging seems to be the only way to live a long life.
  19. I will never be old: old age is always 15 years older than I am.
  20. In youth we run into difficulties: in old age difficulties run into us.
BOWEL SCREENING
In past years around April/May I have been promoting ROTARY BOWELSCAN, with the result that a number of our members have taken up this method of testing one’s risk of Bowel Cancer. Those who have partaken in previous years will have received a reminder for an annual follow-up. The only difference is that the procedure is now performed by ENTERIX ColoVantage Bowel Screening.

Those of you interested and not yet having received a notice, please use the website where you can order direct: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024

BOWEL CANCER affects about 1 in 20 people, but can be curable, if caught early. Tragically, it claims the lives of around 100 Australians every week! If you or one of your loved ones is aged 50 or over, you are at a higher risk of bowel cancer. The good news is that if found early, 90% of bowel cancers can be successfully treated. So, if you are above the 50-year age bracket, you can avail yourself of the BOWELSCAN Project, available during the months of April and May.

Note the early unsavoury warning signs: Blood in or on the stool / A recent change in bowel habits / General stomach discomfort / Weight Loss / Unexplained tiredness etc. See your Doctor! For a number of years I have not hesitated to participate. The test is completed at home, it is non-invasive and required no food nor medication restrictions. Simply collect a brushing of the sample in the reply-paid envelope included with the kit. Testing is approved by pathologists, and a letter of results will be sent to your GP. And this applied to both males and females!

Personally, I cannot consider myself immune to cancer. My family gene is in no doubt responsible for FOUR consecutive male generations of this rotten disease!

Last year, once more, I received a notice, with a NEGATIVE result in response to my annual Scan. Goes to prove that NEGATIVE news can be good news! I therefore don’t hesitate to participate once more this year, looking forward to a similar result.

Price per Test Kit: $30.00, but only available from the Website: www.colovantage.com.au/BSC2024
