As President Janet wasn’t available she asked me to “step up” as acting President. The meeting started with the invocation from Greg Lee followed by a hearty “Happy Birthday” sung by us all to George. It was noted that it was Keith’s 95 th birthday but, unfortunately, he wasn’t with us. Janet will lead the singing next week. Maybe even do a solo.
Apologies were received from Ann Donaldson, Peter Smidt, Graeme Ward, Keith McLeod, Chris
Stebbing & Brooke Jensen.
Brooke has been approached by Brauer College about the possibility of sending some students to
the Defying the Drift program. We had two potential participants from Brauer, Macey Porter and
Taylah McRae, attend the meeting.
Member’s announcements included:
- Judy presented 3 cushions that we have left from the book sale. Jude was looking for suggestions of what we could do with them. I’m delighted to be able to advise that Ann Body will pass them on to the Hospice in The Home people.
- Cathy announced we will have a social evening, 22 August, at the Cattleya Thai Restaurant.
- Tony advised the meeting of the RCW Daybreak’s 25 year celebration on 29 July. Daybreak are solid supporters of our club so we hope our members will support their celebrations.
- David asked for assistance to deliver the Father of the Year entry forms to the participating schools. The presentation event will be 30 August at the City Memorial.
- Anne advised that there will be a Business Professional Women breakfast soon and a Trivia event at and for the Wangoom Hall. More details will follow.
- Tony provided a brief verbal report on the feedback received from the previous week’s advisory groups. A written report will follow but it seems that all most our programs are going well and should be continued notwithstanding some may need review to ensure they are meeting the needs that were identified when the projects were introduced and/or still within our capacity to
deliver properly. There were a few new projects suggested that we will consider. Tony advised the meeting of club business that had happened during the last week. This included:
- Meeting with the WFC management about a proposed charge to use the room for our meetings.
- Meeting with Showgrounds secretary about our potential involvement this year.
- Contact made with the Noorat Showgrounds about our potential involvement this year.
- Meeting with the Early Loss Memorial Project committee.
- The club has purchased a new first aid kit and defibrillator.
John Beks presented a historic perspective of the events and conversations leading up to women becoming members of our club. Some of the anecdotes cited by John were “jarring” and difficult to listen to. Nevertheless, these were the attitudes and beliefs, at the time, of some in our club and in society. Hopefully, we have moved on but we all know there is still a lot to be done in the wider
world.
