Happy St Patrick's Day!
 
St. Patrick’s Day, feast day (March 17) of St. Patrick, patron saint of Ireland. Born in Roman Britain in the late 4th century, he was kidnapped at the age of 16 and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped but returned about 432 CE to convert the Irish to Christianity. By the time of his death on March 17, 461, he had established monasteries, churches, and schools. Many legends grew up around him—for example, that he drove the snakes out of Ireland and used the shamrock to explain the Trinity. Ireland came to celebrate his day with religious services and feasts.
 
It was emigrants, particularly to the United States, who transformed St. Patrick’s Day into a largely secular holiday of revelry and celebration of things Irish. Cities with large numbers of Irish immigrants, who often wielded political power, staged the most extensive celebrations, which included elaborate parades. Boston held its first St. Patrick’s Day parade in 1737, followed by New York City in 1762. Since 1962 Chicago has coloured its river green to mark the holiday. (Although blue was the colour traditionally associated with St. Patrick, green is now commonly connected with the day.) Irish and non-Irish alike commonly participate in the “wearing of the green”—sporting an item of green clothing or a shamrock, the Irish national plant, in the lapel. Corned beef and cabbage are associated with the holiday, and even beer is sometimes dyed green to celebrate the day. Although some of these practices eventually were adopted by the Irish themselves, they did so largely for the benefit of tourists.

Anne's Message 

What a legend Alan Bowes is!
He stepped in at short notice to be our guest speaker in his role as President of the Southwest Branch the Royal Victorian Association of Honorary Justices. He told us the story of the establishment of Justices of the Peace.

Thank you to David Brown and the team he pulled together to volunteer at the Folk Festival. We ended up with a well-earned $5000 and enjoyed a great weekend. Thank you to Brooke and George for organising and doing the heavy work for Rotary
presence at the Deakin Sign Up Day. We made some good contacts, signed a new Friend of Rotary, and received useful feedback.
It was good to welcome back Greg Lee.

We had apologies from Keith McLeod, Trevor Williams, Janet Blackley, and Margaret Ross.
Don't forget to promote the book sale.

Next week our guest speaker will be Stephen Ryan speaking on Warrnambool rivers.
It will be a good night to bring a visitor. I have one acceptance already

Anne Adams
Anne has been contacted by Marg Wagner from 'Enhance Work Placement Experience for Everyone' in regards to billeting under 18s throughout the year to help complete their tafe courses here in Warrnambool. These students live remotely and need to complete intensive elements here at our south west tafe campus. This program has a MOU with our district and is being asked of all clubs within our area. If you are interested, please talk to Anne. Brooke can also forward on the flyer and information.

BOOK SALE RAFFLE:
items are required to create prizes for the raffle at the Book sale.  There will be several prizes as usual, and they will be compiled of whatever is donated. If you can spare something to go into one of the prizes on offer, could you please bring it along and give to Judy.  Suggestions - wine, chocolates, biscuits, food items. REMEMBER everything must be unused/new and not out-of-date. 
 
HI-VIS VESTS: 
We are missing several vests and I ask if you could please check and see if you may have one lurking in a dark corner somewhere, (at home, in the car, at work, in the shed???). If you do find one, could you please check and see if it is clean and bring it back so we have a full complement of vests once more. Many thanks.
 
LIDS FOR KIDS: 
Please continue to bring along your washed milk bottle tops. Svet and her Girl guides are working with Lauren,  who came and spoke to us. You can give the lids to Svet or Judy. Bread tags are also still being collected.
 
SMALL CHANGE JAR: 
please feel free to empty your pockets and purses of any small change which will go towards Rotary's endeavour to END POLIO NOW. Thankyou for your continued support and generosity.

We are on the hunt for a participant for RYLA
 
We are are on the look out for a representative to send to RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards).
Are you between the ages of 18-25?
The RYLA program aims to bring youth together and help develop key transferable skills. You will get to meet people from all walks of life while participating in various activities.
Program runs from April 16th-21st located at Kangaroobie.

All great programs have to have aims and objectives and RYLA is no different! Rotary takes its commitment to helping young people be their best very seriously and they have a long standing relationship with young people throughout the world. RYLA was adopted as an official program of Rotary International in 1971 and has been a worldwide success ever since. It is the most comprehensive youth leadership training that Rotary delivers. The aims of RYLA are:

Hundreds of second hand books in great condition, ranging from travel, educational, childrens, adult fiction, history, sports and more! Not only will we have books, but stalls featuring local artists and makers. There will be a great selection of raffle prizes on offer as well.
Entry is $2.
 
Rotary will be raising funds towards our major project: Warrnambool and District Community Hospice
